President Trump: Part II

The podium for the inaugural ceremony is directly in front of the west side of the Capitol. Anybody attending would try to get within sight of the podium, even blocks away. The Mall is enclosed by the Smithsonian museums. "Adjacent surface streets" would have no view at all.

The pictures that have been published are about as clear as they could be. The only difference is that for 2016 the Park Service covered the grass to protect it.

(That sliding bar is really clever.)

Thanks! These help a lot. Roughly where is this perspective shot from? The Washington Monument?

The Snopes link used as a source:

Pretty much a smoking gun, eh?

What's the argument for that last bit? I can understand thinking the policy ineffective, but how could it increase the risk?
By losing an opportunity to use the arrivals process to recruit potential sources of intelligence. But it doesn't matter, since Trump won't be needing intelligence.

To be fair it's difficult to defend the country against a subversive threat while at same time waging war against your own intelligence services.

Bannon on the NSC? The Body Bags will be coming home quicker then I thought.

One thing I'll say for Bannon is, he's a very bright guy and a lot more rational than his boss. I just don't buy into his tribal political views. My problem with him being on the NSC is that he has no real world experience in national security matters and there's a learning curve on every job. Already some of the rank-and-file in the military are very concerned about what may lie ahead.

Nobody wants to go into battle with a commander who's learning on-the-job.

...this astonishing interview apparently reveals how the memo was written.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9GKL6i38pI&feature=youtu.be

For those who don't want to click: the video is a Fox News interview with Rudy Giuliani: where Giuliani takes credit for the drafting of the memo. Giuliani claims that Trump asked him "how to do this legally." And this is what they came up with.

Incredible. Unbelievable.

I can't believe he admitted that on TV. This could become very problematic for the Trump administration in litigation over intent/pretext of the executive order.

Problem is that Trump might not learn on the job.

Indeed he has already stated he knows more than the generals

Gee, the worked out so great for Germany when Hitler was In command.
Also worked out great for Russia in the early years of the war when Stalin played general, doing even worse then Hitler and bringing Russia to the edge of defeat. Stalin eventually learned and left running the war to the generals. Problem is that Trump seems the type incapable of Learning.

Earlier in the thread, I mentioned the movie "Dave". The main plot is that the White House Chief of Staff has the President under his control (actually a lookalike recruited when the President has a stroke). His ultimate plan is to manufacture a scandal that forces the Vice President to resign, have the President nominate him as Vice President, and then have the President removed due to health issues (the aforementioned stroke that left him in a coma).
How well do Bannon and Pence get along? ;)

The Women's March on Washington filled somewhat more of the Mall, as far as I could tell, than Trump's inauguration, but also Jefferson Ave. (the road immediately on the right) and Independence Ave. (to the right of the buildings on the right of the picture), were packed with people for several blocks. It meant the WMW doubled or tripled his crowd size.

Which in itself is not really a big news story, except that the Thumbsucker-in-Chief threw an extended public tantrum, and is still lying about it, as are his gang of flying monkeys.

Increased risk of alienation and radicalization of US Muslims. As recent attacks have made clear the likes of ISIS don't need elaborate cell structures or planning, they just need one bitter, unstable individual they can convince the US is at war with Islam, Trump is making that so much easier.

Most of the intelligence and security people I've seen interviewed think that Trump's action in detaining the following at U.S. points of entry:
  • Syrian refugees indefinitely
  • Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen citizens for 90 days
  • All refugees, regardless of citizenship, for 120 days.
not only will do nothing to improve U.S. security it may actually increase the risk. The intelligence people have said, Trump needs to identify the deficiencies in the current immigrant vetting process that usually takes more than a year and explain how his 'plan' will improve on it.

But I don't think Trump/Bannon will pay any attention to that. It's all domestic politics. It's politics by meme. Keep 'em the hell out! That's what the people who voted for Trump wanted to see happen, or a good percentage of them, and that's what the Trumpmeister is delivering. It doesn't matter whether it's good policy or will achieve the goal of making the U.S. safer from a terrorist attack. It'll trend really really well on social media. :(

Interesting, they've actually been saying they want the temporary halt to get the immigration disaster under control, but I wouldn't want to kick the libs off their emotional soap box.

This is from the PBS interview I watched Friday night:

Others have said that it will give ISIS (and similar terrorist groups) a propaganda victory in their effort to portray the U.S. as being essentially anti-Muslim. That following up by staging a terrorist attack may be irresistible. The action will undoubtedly provoke anger among Muslims living in the U.S. and may motivate a lone wolf attack. It's the lone wolf attack I fear most.

I'm glad he is a former official, he's part of the appeasement crowd.
