#alternativefacts

Anecdotal - In my local coffee shop, the regulars tend to be Trump supporters. On Sunday morning, overhead one guy saying that "It was the biggest inaugural ever, they just didn't take the photos at the right time." Lot's of nodding of heads and "damn media". And this isn't the hinterlands, I live in suburban CT.

I'm a Southern Illinois right wing loon and I'm appalled by the shear stupidity of the lie myself. Of course Obama's inaugural was bigger, he was the first black president, huge numbers of the black populous went to see it, along with a vast number of white, yellow and red people too. It was a big deal, and rightly so. Why Trump would even try to think otherwise is mind boggling in and of itself. I voted for the bastard, not because I liked him, but, like a lot of others, I hated Hillary. I still have hope for the guy, but he's got to stop this nonsense, quickly.

Yeah but no one ever really calls them on it, probably because if they do they'd just drop Surak and go into a murderous rampage, and they are three times as strong as humans. That's how you normalise these kinds of things!

Sometimes, Argumemnon, I wish you weren't on my side. Because you really are a total *********** nerd.

Yes, your story is just anecdotal, but it's something. I'm surprised by that reaction. I am not too far from you (Boston area), but maybe the liberal tendencies here have biased my view. Didn't think that anyone would give this pathetic lie credence.

Another anecdote, but I was with a few Trump supporters when CNN was showing the side-by-side views of the inaugural audiences of Obama and Trump. They were timestamped onscreen and the commentator specifically noted it. The Trumpeters said, 'yeah, they were taken at different times'. The rationalization is more than a little disorienting.

Hate to tell you this but this is only the tip of the iceberg. Trump is all about Trump. His ego is very, very fragile. Wait until the Chinese or Germans or North Koreans insult him. He's liable to start a war over a personal insult.

He is so unprepared for international politics.

The problem is that Trump sees it as a measure, and therefore if he comes up short he is the loser. You can blame others for making attendence a measuring stick, but he fell for it completely and now is just lying.

Don't expect it to, Conway basically just said that anyone not swallowing their lies may not get access to the President. Breitbart sang her praises for that, and other sycophants are pumping their fist saying how awesome it was that she told him off for calling her on telling a blatant and obvious lie. This will not stop, it will only get worse. The lies will reach North Korean levels by midyear I expect.

There is no alternative to that fact, but there are alternative claims as to what the fact actually is.

This is so common it's trivial. Walk into any court of law and you'll find people arguing for one set of facts over another. Both parties agree there is only one true state of affairs, yet each side feels confident their story is correct.
That doesn't change the facts. No one is arguing that Trump doesn't believe in his alternative post-truth world. If that's the point you are trying to make you could have done so many posts ago.

That people believe false things doesn't make said false things facts.

So what are people to do if it turns out to be a constant stream of lies just like the crowd lie?

Do they march? If so, what kind of hat to wear?

I did see some analysis of attendance and TV viewers as a proportion of the overall population (which has seen steady increases), which was interesting, but I can't for the life of me find where it was.

I think it was the other way around*, Trump had bigger crowds if you counted TV viewers, but but if you corrected for population growth, it was not the biggest.

Trump's mental illness made him feel the need to have that biggest crowd ever that he had Spicer lie about. Had a big crowd been enough as it likely would have been for a person without the need to be the greatest, he could have saved himself the embarrassment of #alternativefacts. Now it has come to many people's attention the ludicrousness of his lies.

*It will be interesting to see which of us has the false memory. I am not certain that isn't me. It very well could be given my brain is saturated with his attendance numbers and I know his TV numbers were large.

They have been trained all through the campaign to ignore the media and trust only Trump. Why would you expect that to change?

The question is what percentage of the populace is this.

Are there? It doesn't seem to me like this particular lie has had any traction, but I might not know what the hinterlands think.

Pretty sure more than a few people are buying the lie the press is using fake pictures of the crowd.

It is basic trump though. He can't accept that anything is greater than him so he must be the biggest and greatest of all time or else. His ego will demand nothing else.

Lying works, look what 30 years of lies did to hillarys reputation.

I applaud your optimism, but he's shown no inclination to do so :(

Wow! I'm impressed. Exactly. But I don't know why this behavior is so surprising to you since Trump and his gang did this from beginning of the primaries and straight through the general election. They made a non-story into a story. But you know what? I'm convinced that these absurd stories are part of his plan. It's misdirection.
