President Trump

Mexican drug lord El Chapo Guzman was extradited from Mexico to New York Thursday night to face charges in the U.S. that carry a mandatory life sentence upon conviction. The arraignment was held Friday in New York's Eastern District federal court in Brooklyn. In Mexico at least, there are news reports suggesting that the timing was chosen to coincide with Donald Trump's inauguration. Mexican officials have denied it and pointed out it took place while Barack Obama was still in office.

I think there may be something to it. While I'm sure most Mexican officials (and the public) despise Donald Trump, he is the U.S. president now and they have no choice but to try and get along with him. If Trump wants to be vindictive he can do a lot of damage to Mexico, both politically and economically. I presume at the national level Mexican officials do not want to see that happen.

I can't imagine that any Mexican official would want to be perceived as carrying water for the The Hair's administration. They almost certainly made sure that the extradition happened under Barrack Obama's administration to avoid any claim by The Hair that Mexico is bending to his will.

I doubt Mexico wants to try to start getting along with the new administration just yet. Mexico has a few cards to play and it would be smart to humble him (in the eyes of the public) before trying to work together.

My wife is Spanish speaking (from South America) and she was looking at some of the reader comments on an online Mexican media website. People were commenting that if the government wanted to extradite Guzman to the U.S. why did they choose to wait until hours before Trump took office? I agree, I was skeptical at first, but I'm beginning to think maybe it was intended as a kind of olive branch to President Trump.

I'm not sure what cards Mexico has to play in any spat with the United States. Right now Mexico is in a precarious position domestically. The huge drug trade and all the violence it has unleashed have caused unprecedented instability. The economy is not too great either. If Trump wanted to be vindictive he could undoubtedly figure out a way to do something that would have a serious impact on the Mexican economy, in a way that would mean many average Mexicans would suffer. I do think the Mexican leadership is decent enough to want to avoid that. Mexican leaders have said, however, they are not paying for Trump's wall, that they won't even discuss it.

I think if that were the case, they would have waited a little longer, like the release of the hostages by Iran just as Reagan finished his inaugural address.

could be, but if it was they should have waited until he was actually sworn it: that would have given Trump the chance to claim it as his accomplishment.

Apparently a lot of Mexicans think if that were the case, the Mexican government would have extradited Guzman long before Inauguration Day, instead of the day before. And Guzman was being arraigned in federal court on Friday morning, almost at the same time Trump was being sworn in. Not that the Mexican government did it so Trump can claim credit necessarily, but as a gesture towards Trump. I have a hunch they're probably right. I would imagine when (or if) Trump learned about it he was probably pleased.

In some of the reports I also saw references to Trump saying, when el Chapo escaped from prison last year, that if elected Trump would "kick his ass." I'd llike to see our president make good on that. Why not put Guzman in a large cell and then let Trump go in and fight him? ;)

I rather doubt Guzman is going to have anything near a fraction of a fraction of the impact releasing the Iran hostages had. Most folks probably may have heard about him as "that drug lord who escaped Mexican jails'. I doubt folks will think of his incarceration as a sigh of relief for the USA. He'll probably be forgotten in a couple of months, at best.

I agree up to a point. No, he didn't ask for permission, yes, they were uncomfortable but allowed the groping. I think it's an exaggeration to call that sexual assault though, it does a disservice to women who have really been assaulted.

No, that fits the legal definition of sexual assault.

By saying, "That's not really sexual assault" you do a greater disservice. Do you tell veterans that they really didn't fIght in a war if they only were in Gulf War 1 vice WWII?

Conway is making the rounds with her million words an hour lying, and whining, she looks more impotent than usual:

The press shouldn't be calling Trump and Spicer liars, it's appalling.
The speakers last night used curse words, and the FBI is investigating them (something about a threat to burn down the White House).
They should be more concerned about the women that lost their health insurance under Obama care. All those women who are in poverty, why don't they care about them.
Trump called for unity.
The press is so unfair.

Stephanopoulos made a token attempt reminding her Trump is the one who brought up the inaugural attendance, but I turned the channel, couldn't take anymore of it.

Now a different Trumpette, Susan Del Percio, is on MSNBC excusing the billionaires in the cabinet, Gov. Rendell called her on it. She shifted to claiming the public would see results. News then showed Spicer's faux press conference, and Rendell couldn't help laughing.

"Spicer was in a difficult situation, ... a President who values his image... Spicer had marching orders..." Del Percio got that right.

Someone is posting Tweets for Trump again, being nice to the marchers yesterday. It followed Trump's Tweet claiming there was an election.

Her explanation on Meet the Press with Chuck Todd is priceless:

cnn.com said:
"You're saying it's a falsehood. And they're giving -- Sean Spicer, our press secretary -- gave alternative facts," she said.

Todd responded: "Alternative facts aren't facts, they are falsehoods."

Alternative facts? What a stupid issue to take a stand on, the pictures were posted and aren't going away.

Of course, no doubt they will soon be lying about the timing of the pictures. I'm surprised they haven't emphasized that dishonest route yet. There must be something on the pictures that designates the timing.

They have certainly been trying to denigrate the marches from yesterday.

Give Conway her due. She doesn't lie. She distracts, but she doesn't out and out lie.

Spicer, on the other hand. ...

It's not as if positions have been filled with people knowledgeable about those positions so far. I'm sure the rest of the government can be filled with people with vaguely connected qualifications. For example, they can probably find some gas station managers to work at the Office of Fossil Energy, or some butchers to run the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service.

Well they got Betsy DeVos for education so...

I got it. I suddenly understand his strategy.

He's taking a hit for the country. "I'm going to make everyone hate Donald Trump so much that they have no choice but to come together."

Absolutely selfless, I tell ya.
