Brexit: Now What? Part II

Actually, I think ceptimus is, from what I can remember of his posts.

He doesn't seem to be the only one.

Hand back the keys and walk away seems to be the preferred option of quite a few. Ramification be damned...we get our country back! Even if it's a bit broken.

This is brilliant.

It's vitally important that the person in charge of leaving the EU not be smart enough co comprehend what a *************** it is.

It's a bit of 19th century Empire throwback.
A number of our military disasters back then were the product of excessive optimism and those who pointed out problems were usually censured for being too negative.

Spin doctors have now reversed direction of rotation. From the Telegraph.
Government sources made clear that Sir Ivan had “jumped before he was pushed” and that Number 10 believed his negative view of Brexit meant that he could not lead the negotiations after the Prime Minister triggers Article 50.
Civil servants have a duty to be neutral, to act without bias and without letting their personal opinions interfere with their work. Civil servants are paid to implement measures that they may not agree with.

To say that they were going to push him suggests that either a) he broke the civil service code and should be sacked and prosecuted or b) having a personal bias towards certain policies is now a requirement for civil servants and we can expect them all to be sacked and replaced after each change of government or c) it was a lie.

The guy who resigned was the one who said last month that the deal would take ten years to discuss and even then might not be accepted.

So good riddance..
Ah yes, there is no place in Brexitland for reality, experience or expertise.

I've already posted earlier in the thread that I don't think the EU is really capable of negotiating anything meaningful in a two-year time frame. I think we should just accept the default world trade term conditions to begin with and walk away from further time-wasting 'negotiation'. That way we might be able to exit the EU even faster than the suggested two years. I think only when the reality of actual trading conditions confronts the French and Germans will they begin to attempt to negotiate something better.

Yes, Ceptimus said we should just hand back the keys and walk away.

Interestingly enough he said this of the Scottish Indyref position:

I think most English people would be sad to see Scotland leave the UK mainly for emotional and historic reasons. But on the other hand, we'd be glad to see the back of perpetual moaners like Sturgeon and we'd no longer have to put up with the unrealistic and unachievable demands made by SNP members at Westminster.

English taxpayers would no longer have to suffer the iniquity of Scotland sucking on the English taxpayer's teat and using that money to provide Scottish people with handouts not enjoyed south of the border (free prescriptions, cheaper education and such like).

If the Scottish economy collapses following independence, it might make Scotland a nice cheap place to visit for holidays.

Presumably it'll be about the only place English or rUK people could afford to go then, when their own economy collapses frollowing Brexit.

:eye-poppi

Senior diplomat Sir Tim Barrow will be appointed the UK's new ambassador to the EU to replace Sir Ivan Rogers.

Foreign Office sources confirmed the appointment of the former ambassador to Moscow, who will now play a key role in the UK's Brexit negotiations.

Well a man whose dealt with Vladimir Putin will probably find the EU positively relaxing by comparison. Of course the mere fact he's taken the job doesn't mean he disagrees with his predecessor, may simply have been Sir Ivan had to fall on his sword to make public the Civil Service's view on this farrago. Of course I have no doubt Ceptimus will be along shortly to explain that the Civil Service is yet another group whose opinion we have to ignore...

New event. According to the BBC, Nigel Farage will now have a radio chat show on LBC. We are promised
The Nigel Farage Show will air from 19:00 to 20:00, Mondays to Thursdays, with the host describing it as "full of opinions, callers and reaction".
The last of these things it will indeed be full of, I can believe.

Last time I saw something of that depth and complexity was the Soupy Sales Show. No link; I show mercy.

But of course no facts, evidence, or truth because Nigel doesn't do those.

We can see the absolute priorities of the Brexiteers' ideology in this, from today's BBC news website
Theresa May has insisted that she wants firms to have the "maximum freedom to trade with and operate in the single market".
But the prime minister is due to confirm in a speech later this month that the UK will have two fundamental red lines in its Brexit negotiations - control of its borders and freedom from the European Court of Justice.
To exclude Johnnie Foreigner, and to put an end to foreign judges telling us what to do, any economic consequences, however damaging, will be willingly embraced by the xenophobes.

As I've been fearing since she stepped into the PM job, Theresa May is and out (of the EU) - out (of the EEA) - out (of the Council of Europe)-er and will dogmatically pursue this regardless of the impact on the country.

We are hurtling boldly towards the 1950s when we could call a ****** a ******, put someone to death, segregate the working classes at 11 based on the 11-plus and maintain low levels of economic migration. Trouble is that the world has moved on since then and we'll suffer badly

The world has gone to the dogs since we abolished conscription and corporal punishment in schools. :D

A major Tory donor has threatened to stop funding the party if Theresa May plans to remove the UK from the "critical" single market after Brexit.

Sir Andrew Cook, who has given more than £1.2m to the party, told BBC Radio 4 that ending single market access was "chronic and dangerous" to the economy.

The engineering firm chairman said at least one of his factories was almost "entirely dependent" on access to it.
