Brexit: Now What? Part II

Too much democracy. And there's no such thing as "democracy deficit" anyway...

If there can be "too much" of something, surely it is possible to have a "deficit" of that thing too, unless the optimal supply of the thing in question is zero.

I think that was deliberate irony, suggesting that this would be too much democracy when the allegation about the EU was that there was a democratic deficit.

Precisely. (Maybe I didn't phrase it in best way.)

One thing I hadn't seen mentioned, and was myself holding off from mentioning in the hopes Hammond would see sense, is the IR35 rule changes for the public sector.

HMRC are changing things for contractors brought in by public sector bodies which essentially tighten the already tight rules, to the extent that it is likely those hired for public sector work will be pretty much automatically drawn into IR35. This means they are treated as employees for tax purposes.

Not surprisingly this is (already) resulting in contractors moving on rather than run the risk of getting swept up, but the bigger exodus is going to be around the time the change kicks in.

And it kicks in in April...at exactly the time HMG are going to need a whole load of contractors to help with Brexit once Article 50 has been invoked.

Ah. That democracy deficit. Thankfully no UKGov would ever try and avoid parliamentary scrutiny of their actions and plans.

Apparently MPs may be told something about the Brexit plans in February:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-38319337

My view is that they will wait until the last possible moment and give two cruddy alternatives, MPs will be forced to go with the least worst which will then be spun into "broad parliamentary support" for whatever dog's breakfast we end up with

But February is still a long way off. Suppose the MPs revolt and refuse the choice between essentially a hanging and a firing squad?

I'm sure they're being lobbied to do so at the time. Will the discipline hold? If there is a mass revolt of Tory MPs, can Theresa force them to submit?
I'm reasonably sure wars were fought in England over questions like these.

At least the people know who to blame if things go awry next year. This is from the Express.
REMAINERS are "willing economic hardship" on Britain as they refuse to accept the public's decision to leave the European Union, experts say.

Politicians, campaigners and Europhiles are hoping to overturn the referendum result - and are doing so by damaging chances of Brexit success, a top economist has suggested.

In spurious survey after spurious survey and unfounded pronouncement after unfounded pronouncement politicians who didn’t like the Brexit result and businesses and banks with vested interests are trash-talking Britain and hoping for economic failure.
Personally I think they should be put on trial as enemies of the people. Their confessions of committing sabotage against the Economic Plan will make good TV. I'm sure some of these reactionaries are agents of Johnnie Foreigner too. Hanging's too good for them. Ten years in a labour camp will teach them a lesson they won't forget!

Ehm. I didn't know briefly if I am reading about GB 2016 or Czechoslovakia 1950...

According to the Brexit Handbook, a narrow referendum victory for an ill-defined objective delivers a clear and unambiguous mandate for the government of the day to deliver the people's will without having to suffer the indignity of parliamentary oversight.

Inspection of the half-baked proposals by our elected representatives is the true democratic deficit

Then the Tory MPs could be stripped of the whip and then run the risk of being deselected by the largely eurosceptic constituency associations.

Theresa alone likely cannot but a combination of Theresa and the threat of deselection may very well cow them. A lack of a coherent opposition in England means that Conservatives will likely hold, if not even gain, seats so for most MPs it's better to swallow your pride and buckle down to the will of the Constituency Association rather than attempting to appeal to the Conservative-voting public at large (who even if they are remain would still vote Tory).

The Express! With their mysteriously maverick experts directly contradicting the consensus of most other experts.

I was looking for information about the times for viewing the meteor shower, and stumbled onto their website. They had articles touted down the side of the page claiming that scientists are warning of a new ice age because of the quiescent sun at the moment! They had another one where they claim that scientists were saying that the atmosphere is cooling, and that temperatures had peaked and are now falling!

They are baldly lying, and actively working to destroy our civilisation. These people really should be prosecuted as traitors to the human race. I can imagine that they will be in a few decades from now, when the death toll and the disasters are the norm, and their blatant lies are on record to show that they were sheer propaganda holding back a cogent response from our body politic.

They are truly evil *****************.

Not surprised by this. From what I understand, the two year timetable is a recommendation and can be extended if agreed by all parties.
Is a trade deal taking ten years the same thing as the Art 50 process taking ten years, or may we find ourselves outside after a maximum of two years, but still with no trade deal in place for possibly another eight?

Like I've been saying, the government will use this as a rationale for a Hard Brexit

I wonder who their " top economist" is. Curiously unwilling to speak publicly, unlike all the experts detailing the problems of Brexit...
Surely they're not trying to pass off Ryan Bourne, the thatcherite CPS and IEA hack, as a "top economist". I remember Thomas Piketty's takedown of him on C4 last year.

Also, has the Express completely abandoned proof-reading their junk? That article is terrible, littered with errors.

I wonder the same. After Art50 is triggered, is it simply a two-year countdown to severing all agreements, and only hopefully reaching any new ones, with the latter taking as long as it may take? That is how I've been understanding it, meaning that once Brexit is formally triggered, the negotiating power the UK is counting on is fairly worthless, based on no guarantees whatsoever. After all, Brexit is an exit, not a new round of fists on tables asking for a revised and bespoke deal from other members (been there, done that).

OMFG, Brexit is threatening our biscuits:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-38328388

A popular brand of pink wafer is under threat after a company went into administration following a "sharp fall" in the value of sterling after Brexit.

Administrator FRP Advisory said a "sustained deterioration" since the EU vote had exacerbated Rivington Biscuits in Wigan's financial difficulties.

The company, which makes Pink Panther wafers, will cut 99 of its 123 staff, keeping 24 while it seeks a buyer.
