President Trump

Melania was a professional model, that's what they do. In my opinion she should be proud of her work, and own it both morally and legally. She has nothing to be ashamed of.

I personally think its awesome. Maybe we'll get a wee bit past the whole slut-shaming crap and quit trying to enforce some "wholesome virginal female" thing on women in this country.

I don't have a problem with the pictures per se, but why they are being published now. It's like say your friend marries the girl everyone slept with. You DON'T say a word. There are things people with class do or don't do. That part of Melania's life was a long time ago. They aren't publishing them now because the pics are good. They are publishing them because she will be the first lady.

They are publishing them so they can point out how slutty and icky she is and tarnish Trump for being associated with someone who isn't a proper, modest, demure woman. I sincerely hope it backfires, it's completely underhanded as well as borderline sexist.

But mostly we didn't think that at all. More to the point, we didn't worry about failed states harbouring religiously-inspired terrorists. Secularism had won : we'd passed beyond religion to ideology.

Are you thinking of the same cold war I am? The one in which the "godless atheist" commies were hiding under every bed?

It's not going to backfire. Since when aren't men interested in pictures of naked women?

This attitude might carry a lot more weight if large numbers of the people who lost it over Michelle Obama wearing sleeveless dresses weren't now calling this "awesome". I'm not saying you personally complained about Michelle's bare arms, but my relatives and co-workers certainly did. Now they have no problem with nude pictures of the First Lady, and our President elect is in the Professional Wrestling hall of fame.

But that's how the US form of democracy works. If Clinton had won by the same margin I'm pretty sure no one would be complaining about the EC right now.

Well, nobody *here* anyway. Other parts of the interwebs might have more complaining.

I will say that I don't think the other side would have been protesting and carrying on out in the real world the way the democrats have done. I'm finding the whole "we didn't win and we don't like Trump so it's unfair" bit to be kind of baffling.

Inevitably, it is the solid red Eastern Washington always whining about the government and opposing desperately needed infrastructure in heavily populated Western Washington. Every day in the local Seattle papers, the comment section are filled with Eastern and rural Washington residents railing against the new Lake Washington floating bridge or the SR99 viaduct replacement project. There is a desperate need for a new I-5 bridge spanning the Columbia River between Oregon and Washington and it is consistently opposed by people in Eastern Washington.
Yes,. well some of this is also Washingtonians being, well, very strange people. It hasn't been the rural areas that keep voting down local initiatives for mass transit. Seriously, Why the heck don't we have some reasonable mass transit? The density and the geographic concentration would argue for it. And why exactly do people in Seattle get to vote to put the replacement for the Alaskan Way viaduct underground? That's such an incredibly inane idea - we're in an earthquake zone, Seattle is built on landfill! But oh tnoes! It might interrupt the view - the view that keeps their property values so high and helps support the gentrification of the city, forcing ever more of the poor and under-served to move further out from the city, garnering immense commutes through ridiculous traffic... oh and yes - furthering your irritation that those poor people elsewhere have too much influence over what the wealthy Satellites get to do with their oodles of money...

*** Might be a good idea for us not to have this argument ***

I'm sorry, I actually did laugh out loud at my desk reading this. That's some of the most entertaining hyperbole I've read in days.

Why? Trump has openly advocated the abuse of the powers of the Presidency.as well as concrete ways of getting away with it. Democracy is not a gift that we are entitled to. No it is precious and much more fragile than most people realize. Do you really think that the German citizens in 1932 had thought the leader they just elected would result in the destruction of the German democracy and push the world towards oblivion and the deaths of more than 30 million people?

Democracy only persists through respect for the rule of law and Trump has said that intends to break these laws. Now, whether he was serious and whether people will be good Germans and follow his orders ar the unknown questions.

Funny thing on that front... Trump isn't going to be able to become that sort of a fascist unless he takes away the citizenry's right to bear arms - something that his supports absolutely will not tolerate or allow.

One might take the opposing view that his supporters being much more likely to be armed than his detractors could make the transition easier for him.

Was the election of Trump a move in the direction of more respect for women, and their choices?

In my opinion, yes. Hillary would have treated women like meek little sheep who needed the federal government to protect them from the evil patriarchy. Trump will treat them like adults (unless they're hot and within reach of his stubby fingers).

Has Trump given us any indication of how one treats another "like an adult"? Clearly the first step is name calling.

 Your backfire and my backfire might be different things.

I'm saying that they will SELL and GQ is not going to suffer as a result. I LOVE naked women but this is wrong in my book. But then again, so is Trump as President but both are facts of life.

I think you're dead wrong on that. But let's hope we'll never find out.
