CSICON Las Vegas, October 2016

I am in.

Need to decide where I am staying. Excalibur itself has little appeal to me.

I'm booked at the Excalibur too. Conference rates are pretty good (not South Point good, but good for the location) and the rooms look fine.

See you guys in Vegas!

Do post here if you will be there too and haven't posted yet. :)

The conference is almost here, and I am following up on a post I sent a few months ago. I will be getting into Vegas on the Wednesday before the conference, so I am still up for meeting with any of you for a drink that afternoon/evening. Nine Fine Irishmen was thrown out as a possibility, and that works for me. I can add that one of the CSICON organizers told me they are going to be using Octane Lounge as the bar for the conference, and the hotel said they will put extra chairs in there to accommodate us. Happy to meet there if anyone wants to check it out. So, is anyone still interested in a drink ahead of the conference, and if so, where should we meet?

I'd been hoping to attend this year, but unfortunately* I won't be able to.

Have fun, hopefully I'll be there next year.

*Unfortunate about CSICON, but I won't be attending because I'm busy moving to a new city, and that's a very good thing.

Does the Octane Lounge allow smoking? If yes, then Nine Fine is the answer.

I'll be there on Wednesday and happy to meet up for a drink. Maybe meet at the Octane Lounge to check it out? I would also prefer a smoke-free area but the Octane is on the "Castle Walk" level (not the casino), same as the food court and the restaurants so hopefully smoke is less of a problem. If it isn't, we could always move to the Nine Fine Irishmen.

I have no idea who any of the people on that list are.

Persuade me why they are worth £99

I had no idea who most of the speakers at the TAMs I went to were, but most of them were excellent.

The same was again true at QEDCon this year. In fact, I skipped a couple of talks by people I had seen before, who i knew would be good, to see others I hadn't seen before.

If you don't think two days of top quality talks on science and skepticism (plus an evening of entertainment) is worth £99, it's not my job to convince you. Look at the videos from previous years, read up on the speakers, and talk to people who went. They are planning to have QEDCon 2017 around the same time of year.

I know how tough it can be to get consensus on where and when to meet, so to make things as easy as possible, I suggest we meet on the Wednesday afternoon around 2:00 at Octane and take it from there. If it is too smoke-filled, we can make the quick walk to Nine Fine Irishmen. I want to make this as casual as possible with people showing up if they can, and leaving whenever they want to. Hopefully 2:00 works for most people, and if not, it wouldn't be the first time I drank by myself at a bar! I would add that this is Vegas, so it is not out of the question to have lots of people in a bar on a Wednesday afternoon, which leads to the question - How does one spot a critical thinker in a bar full of people? Cheers everyone, and I hope I see some of you on Wednesday.
