There is the concept of consilience of evidence. I have seen it most often in discussions of evolution. There, the concept is that evidence that comes from different fields of scientific endeavor and different research labs, institutions, etc. makes the case for evolution much stronger than just the individual facts.

The same concept applies to non-scientific claims. It is brusquely - probably too brusquely - stated as "If it walks like a duck, swims like a duck and goes quack, then it's probably a duck". The idea is that various lines of evidence which may not stand alone can, when combined, make a strong piece of evidence. I believe that is a valid line of thought.

Regarding Trumpian claims, this is our exact situation. He's a braggart. he's a lout, he's dishonest, he's a horn dog and he wear a ferret. The evidence behind each of those claims ranges from proven to obvious. The consilience of those claims are thus, without extremely powerful contravening evidence, justified.

PS: sunmaster14, your claim that you and marplots are alone in your use of logic is hereby refuted. Or, more correctly, again refuted.

This is correct, but only if they are all evidence of the same thing. One shouldn't take evidence of overstepping boundaries as evidence of sexual assault. I can very well imagine someone who is flirtatious, socially awkward and takes advantage of his social status and not deduce a sexual assault.

Is it your contention that rapists brag about their crimes to relative strangers? If that's so, then your point stands. If it isn't, then the lines of evidence do not converge on a single diagnosis.

It's pointless anyhow. We don't charge/convict people on what they say but what they do. The alleged victims are coming forward to establish just that. Trump's locker room talk doesn't help or hurt the factual case against him that touch sexual assault directly. If this weren't so, we'd be bringing young Billy up on charges too.

When I first met my future wife, she was attending a Christian school. They had the 6" rule: people of opposite sex couldn't be closer than 6" to prevent any possibility of physical - and assumed immoral - contact. At the time I thought this a very strict rule, very puritanical. I imagined it to be a fringe belief. But times change and now we are sliding back toward less permissiveness and I expect such a rule would find adherents. "Inappropriate" is now "assault." So be it.

Frankly, I'd be happy to see hugs disappear.

Here's something fun I learned to accompany everyone's schadenfreude. There's a German phrase for a surprise that is not really a surprise, a surprise that is sort of expected: Eine Alltags Ueberraschung.

Yep, that's rape. Which makes me a rape victim too, since I got grabbed in the crotch once. I only wish I had known it at the time. Turns out I've been in denial and that's why I'm not reacting with the appropriate level of outrage.

By not embracing my victimhood, I'm tacitly supporting the dominant rape culture. Doubly victimized and now triggered. I didn't speak out or press charges and my victimizer probably went on to grab other crotches, empowered by my failure to take action. Forgive me.
