Hillary v Trump - The Double Standard

I think the problem isn't that there's a double standard for Trump. I think the problem is that Hillary's supporters keep trying to apply the same standard to both candidates.

You mean the standard of being competent to be President of the USA? In the debate Clinton was clearly doing her best to appear Presidential. Trump seems to have been under the impression that he was at a WWE press event.

Most of the people who vote for Hillary Clinton this fall will not be "Hillary supporters". They will be people who, given the two options, disliked her the least.

it's almost as if the Republican Party sat down and put all their effort into finding a way to lose an election they had a really good chance of winning with pretty much any halfway reasonable candidate.

The Republican party made the mistake of letting Republican voters choose their candidate rather than the party elite. That allowed protest voters to steer the nomination to the clown candidate.

OP ed in the gruan on this:

The journalistic consensus seems to be that television anchors and news reporters should call him out on his serial whoppers, as NBC’s Lester Holt did when moderating Monday’s debate, and not preserve a false balance between two candidates of such disparate quality and seriousness – which would be to fall prey to what the media commentator Brooke Gladstone slyly calls fairness bias. “Ah yes, Professor Smith, thank you for arguing that the Earth is round, and now let me give equal time and ostensible respect to Mr Jones, who argues that the Earth is flat.” If you want a good recent example of fairness bias, just recall the coverage of the Brexit referendum campaign by our timid and intimidated BBC.

Like union members, not analogies work, but I think the OP offers an insightful way of looking at things. It's a way of explaining the different types of treatment, primarily from the perspective of Trump supporters, but even from members in the media. The metaphor is just a more colorful way of saying that the candidates face different expectations.

Hillary is running for the position of Serious Statesman.

Both Trump and Clinton are vying to become the POTUS; she's posing as a Serious Statesman, and he's posing as a clown.

Trump isn't. Maybe he should be, but he isn't.

No maybes about it. He's running for a critically important job that he cannot do. The people cheering him on are precisely the sort of vulgarians who love professional wrestling. This is an election, not Wrestlemania X.

This is why the GOTV is so important. Dems are currently motivated by hating Donald Trump. They need to be motivated by supporting Clinton. Plouffe made that observation in an interview this week. He didn't mention it as a strength for Trump but I feel it is. He may poll lower numbers but they're devout fans. If the Dems can't light some fire under voters it could be closer than it should be.

Maybe, but that cuts both ways, too. Republicans are currently more motivated by hating Hillary Clinton than actually supporting Trump.

True, but isn't it also true that Republicans hate Hillary so much largely because Republicans have been running a smear campaign against her since Bill was in office?

Hillary does not have the charisma of Bill Clinton or Barack Obama, but most of the hatred directed against her has either been whipped up for political purposes or from sexism.

Polls seem to disagree with this, with her supporters outnumbering those that just think she's the better option.

For instance, take the latest Fox Poll when 69% of those supporting her strongly support her, whereas just 31% Only somewhat support her.

That's a 2 to 1 ration of solid support for her.

I feel you are projecting your own opinions onto her supporters invalidly.

True, but.... You have to break it down into the basket of deplorable - the true Trumpistas - and the grudging passengers on the fail train. The deplorables are about half of his support and they are motivated. Does Hillary have that same number of equally dedicated? Possibly, but they're perhaps just not as visible.

I think the point that Plouffe was making was that with Obama in '08 you saw that rapt devotion, and that in 2012 it took until late in the campaign to see it, but it swung the elections.

Clint Eastwood may have that chair left over from the 2012 convention.

Well, I have to say that if I had a vote it would go to Clinton purely on the basis that she couldn't be as awful as Trump, not because of anything positive I can find about Clinton.

In fact, now that you mention it, if that chair that Clint Eastwood talked to was running, and had the best chance of beating Trump, then I would vote for the chair.

Yes and Fox News was really hard to watch this evening the way Judge Jeanine completely distorted the facts.

or Nurse Ratched, or a doorknob, or even a plugged toilet.

But hey, charisma isn't everything. Hillary compensates by always keeping herself fit and healthy:

@OP - The comparison is fairly apt, if one takes into account that there are quite a few people who think pro wrestling is for real. IOW, they are easily fooled by wishful thinking and cardboard reality. I imagine these are precisely the core supporters of Trump.

You would make a better case if you did not use photoshopped images. Sort of ruins your argument. And if it helps, I feel the same way about Trump photos.
