Trump runs for POTUS / Trumped Up! Part V

Maybe not at this exact second but let's give him 15 minutes.
I favour the Copenhagen interpretation of Trumps's beliefs : they're indeterminate until measured, and the act of measurement renders them indeterminate until the next measurement. It's a bit like quantum physics, with expedience as an added factor and no entanglement. Decoherence is moot, for obvious reasons.

I think the damage Trump can do is being seriously overestimated. It reminds me of what the right used to say about Obama - all the evils of the world will swoop down upon us, stealing our babies in the night.

It's a bad strategy in the end. The more you make a candidate out to be Hitler's clone, the more you risk people not taking anything said seriously. That's always the problem with caricatures - people figure out it's theater.

And theater has no place in politics, of course.

That's why Trump is doing so well. It's the way he and his supporters abstain from theater and caricatures.

Actually, I'm laughing even harder at the notion that Islam is "taking over" this country.
I heard there were entire towns in the US under sharia law. Which towns, which states, the source hadn't registered them, presumably due to the shock, but it's there on the internet somewhere. Next to video of celebrating Muslims in New Jersey.

How long have we been on the brink of destruction now? Just when I finally learned to love the bomb all this other crap came up. I'm past caring now.

It's fear. It's raw fear.
It seems to me there's an apocalyptic atmosphere everywhere, and it's not at all surprising. The rate of change - just change, generally - has been increasing exponentially since the 16th century or so, and it's totally out of hand now. People have long grown up into a new world, but only a bit new. When I got my degree in computer science in 1976 we had a 6K mini-computer and thought it was cool.

The next two generations were the first to overtake sci-fi. With exceptions : John Brunner's Shockwave Rider is worth a read. And who knew Frank Herbert was so spookily prophetic? Oh, the irony ...

Russia is also not stupid enough to start a war with the US.
Apart from the nuclear option, how could they practically come to grips? It's a nonsense.

Hence NATO. As part of NATO the US is in Russia's face. If you want to be in Russia's face that's something worth paying a bit for. And the US is in a strong bargaining position vis a vis people who have Russia in their faces by geographical imperative. A reasonable balance has long been maintained, and NATO as a practical multi-national military force is unequalled since Peak Rome.

Trump, unknown to him, is projecting NATO as a version of the Delian League - a money-making enterprise of Athens which did not end well.

A POTUS needs intelligence and experience dealing with Russia's pushing the envelope. Sanctions, upping NATO's presence, uniting countries against Russia using economic sanctions, those are going to be the most productive options.
The Korean War is a classic lesson of restraint in the face of provocation. The US did not escalate - but it did not falter, it kept its allies on-side, it dominated the diplomatic sphere, and left the Soviets stuck insisting it was nothing to do with them. Everybody knew it was, but nobody said so. When somebody provokes you, don't do what they're provoking you to do.

Trump, OTOH, is either going to let his buddy get away with such maneuvers, or overreact and cause an international incident, all the while alienating our allies.
Trump's reponse to provocation is, of course, to react as intended That Cuban guy with all the money plays the game well. Set 'em up, knock 'em down : Twitter was almost designed for it.

Earlier this year, Turkey shot down a Russian fighter-plane that Turkey claimed had invaded its airspace.

People wondered if such an incursion could trigger the NATO pact.
Turns out not.

A prospect even more horrid than what's happening in Aleppo now is a US/Russian air engagement. The way things are going in Syria I'm wondering if the Assadists haven't captured the local Russian military from under Putin. Which, if true, suggests that the Kremlin is far more fragile than suspected and the world is in an even worse state than I thought.

We do laugh at people who tell us what life in our country is like. We already have the NHS and the BBC because we have no guns : how much worse a hell-hole can it become?

I can't wait to see!

Something tells me a right winger will save your sorry asses. :)
