I was never comfortable with a gun concealed on my person. Which is why I hardly ever carry anymore, even openly at a rifle range. Having the "everything is a target" crap aimed at me is offensive especially on a forum that is supposed to know better.
I apologise for offending you. But my statement stands.
If you have a gun, you will use it in situations where you believe that you are justified in doing so. Situations where you consider the defense of yourself and your family to be more important to you than the life of the person you are defending yourself against.
That's what it's for. Or rather, that's the purpose that a lot of people who own guns claim.
If you have a gun, you will consider its use justified
in more situations than you would if you did not have a gun. People here have said "I'd rather have a gun and not need it than need a gun and not have it" but there will be more times that you perceive you will need a gun if you have one, than if you don't.
In previous threads, I have questioned some people who always carry a pocket knife on them as to the uses to which they put it. And every one of them has rattled off a list of situations they find themselves in where they find an opportunity to use their knife. I don't carry a pocket knife, but that doesn't mean that I don't find myself in those situations. It's just that those who
do carry a pocket knife
see more opportunities to use it than I do. Hence their justification for carrying one while I see no such justification.
Similarly, a person who always carries a gun will see more opportunities to use it than a person who doesn't. If I'm at a bar and a drunk guy is coming at me with a broken bottle,
if I am carrying a gun, I will use it in self-defense. I would not carry a gun for self-defense and then
not use it. That would be absurd.
So while the statement "when you have a gun, everything looks like a target" was indeed a rhetorical exaggeration, the point I was trying to make with it is still a valid one. You carry a gun for self-defense. And you will use it in those situations where you feel that its use is justified. And you will feel that its use is justified in more situations than if you weren't carrying it, simply because it is there and you have the option to use it.
And this is true despite the other thing that I have been saying, which is that the number of defensive gun uses in the US is vastly exaggerated by gun proponents. And it still has nothing whatsoever to do with making armchair mental health diagnoses.
