Indonesia marks Independence Day by sinking illegal ships

from article:

NATUNA ISLANDS, Indonesia — Indonesia marked its Independence Day on Wednesday by sinking 60 foreign ships seized for fishing illegally in the country’s waters.

Maritime and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said the ships were sunk at eight locations across the Indonesian archipelago.

Pudjiastuti has organized the destruction of more than 200 illegal fishing boats since 2014. The government of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has taken a hardline stance against illegal fishing, partly driven by the need for Indonesia to show its neighbours, including China, that it is in control of its vast territory of 17,000 islands.

The article did not state whether or not the crew of the ships survived.

If any of the crew died, I believe that would be murder.

Why did this not get more publicity?

I'm not certain what point you're making. If the Indonesian authorities gave no warning before sinking the vessels, or killed the crews intentionally, or left them in distress at sea without offering help or rescue, then I agree.

I'm not sure, however, if you mean that if a suspected offender is inadvertently killed by the forces sent to suppress the criminal activity in which he or she is engaged, it could in all cases be described as murder. That raises other questions.

Why should it get more publicity?

It's a bit of a dramatic gesture, for sure, but all in all it's in their right to sink impounded vessels.
I think the OP was under the impression that the Indonesian navy celebrated their national independence day by attacking illegal fishing boats at sea.

I think so as well. But that would mean he didn't read the article he used in the OP. (I know. This never happens :) )
But that's why I was asking him.

Please no. That was an epic disaster for ABDA. Fortunately Yamamoto was spot-on about being able to run wild for six months.
Now that I think of it, however, more than a few Indonesians were probably happy to be rid of their Dutch overlords. Until they met their new Japanese overlords.

A sign of things to come?

Day three of the new parliament and Turnbull's majority government loses a vote on the floor of the House. The first time in 55 years.
And probably not the first for this governement?

Apparently Labor had spotters at Canberra airport reporting back which of the more arrogant Liberals decided to shoot off early. Those included the Deputy PM, Barnaby Joyce (who made it back).

Where do you think you are?
