Trump runs for POTUS / Trumped Up! Part IV

Is Trump's team capable of framing the meeting to his advantage, given the short notice and their evident lack of intellectual flair? I really don't think so.

Are the massed ranks of the Press, so vehemently traduced by the Trump team for many months, capable of framing it to Trump's confusion and dismay? They most certainly are.

Denying that the cost of the wall was discussed cannot possibly work for Trump. It was a stupid, thoughtless, lazy thing to do, and he'd done it within the hour.

I'm incredulous that someone as allegedly smart as Trump didn't see Nieto's ploy coming. Of course he was going to say "I told that gringo to go **** himself, we aren't paying for any wall." He couldn't have said anything else.

If you were informed you would have heard about the security concerns. Do you really need proof on how violent Mexico is?
Hey it is your boy who was saying that Mexicans are drug dealers and rapists and now he is saying they are wonderful people. Which is it?

Funny how trump looks quite presidential in this trip.

Where was Hillary, oh yeah, giving a speech then off to bed.

You do understand at least a hundred thousand have been killed from this drug war they are having? You understand that much of that criminal element comes north along with the cheap labor. You seem to be quite black and white for a lib.

Nieto could be the one lying as this appeared to be a stunt (that he was expecting both Clinton and Donald to say no to) to deflect coverage from his plagiarism and poor approval rating. Regardless of who's lying, Donald went to Mexico and wimped out on his signature issue.
Indeed : if he says the dirty Mexican is lying (as they do) he leaves himself open to the question of why he didn't bring it up.

If he concedes that Nieto did declare that Mexico wouldn't pay for the wall but Trump didn't respond and therefore it wasn't discussed he sounds like a wimp.

"We had a frank exchange of views" is simply beyond Trump's ken, let alone his Scoobie Gang's. As it is, Trump's personality issues probably mean this will become all about which of them is lying for days at least.

The Mexican president told the orange turd that Mexico will not pay for the wall. You know, the orange turd's main "policy". And then the orange turd lied about it.

So presidential.

So are Mexicans rapists and drug dealers like your Cheeto Fuhrer said when he first launched his "campaign" or are they good people like he is saying now?

You said it yourself with "allegedly". Ain't nobody alleging it but himself, when it comes down to it, and we can all see what that's worth. (Hint : a lot less than ten billion dollars.)

In the US, yes.

I could have it completely wrong and if so I apologise.

But the way I understand it, isn't it down to the colleges?

If individual votes counted, with the population there wouldn't be a result for about a week

Are you referring to the Electoral "College"? And yes, you're wrong.

The winner in each state is known within a few hours of the polls closing, except in very rare cases such as Florida in 2000. Electors pledged to the winning candidate then cast their votes for the Pres and Veep. "Faithless Electors" can and have happened, but they are rare, few in number, and have never influenced the outcome of an election.

Making Mexico pay for the wall is one of only seven policy positions on Donald's website.

Yes. Thank you. It turns out I was missing a critical link in the reasoning. Trump would change the law so that all wire transfers require an ID and proof that one is legally in the US. As for effectiveness of this approach we will have to estimate how many independent businesses will pop up which will provide a "legal" "front man" for the transfers. But one unanticipated the problem is that now when I need to wire money to North Dakota where my brother-in-law's car broke down, I have to bring a certified copy of my birth certificate to the Western Union office.

And one of the other points of Trump's plan is to threaten to cut off trade with Mexico. Because the balance of payments is in their favor, they are, in Trump's words, much more dependent on us than we are on them so the US will have leverage in any trade negotiations with Mexico.

Trump has said he will force Mexico to pay for the wall by drastically limiting the amount of money Mexican citizens can send back to family and friends in Mexico. Among other things, this would probably create a serious economic crisis in Mexico. This is from the Washington Post:
Trump said he would threaten to change a rule under the USA Patriot Act anti-terrorism law to cut off a portion of the funds sent to Mexico through money transfers, commonly known as remittances. The threat would be withdrawn if Mexico made “a one-time payment of $5-10 billion” to pay for the border wall, he wrote.

“It’s an easy decision for Mexico,” Trump said in the memo, on campaign stationery emblazoned with “TRUMP Make America Great Again!” Link

It's not clear exactly how Trump -- if he were to be elected -- could change the Patriot Act in the way he suggests. Would it require the consent of Congress? Could he do it unilaterally under executive powers without being challenged legally?

But that doesn't mean that the people who come North are violent. Have you ever hear the term " Post hoc, ergo proper hoc"?

Loosely translated it means "after this therefore because of". The problem is, it is almost never true. It's a fallacy. Do dangerous people travel North? I'm sure of it. Are illegal immigrants more likely to commit violent crimes than legal citizens? NO.

The Mythical Connection Between Immigrants and Crime
Newcomers to the U.S. are less likely than the native population to commit violent crimes or be incarcerated.

And data show that new immigrants — including illegal immigrants — are actually less likely to commit crime, not more.

To wit:

—"Foreign-born individuals exhibit remarkably low levels of involvement in crime across their life course." (Bianca Bersani, University of Massachusetts, 2014. Published in Justice Quarterly.) https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...ld-trump-is-wrong-about-immigrants-and-crime/
