Hillary Clinton is Done: part 3

I hope that Hillary will win because she is the better of the two main candidates. I think that the result will be much, much closer than many Hillary supporters expect and I think that there is still a very real fear that Trump and or the GOP will manage to sway the undecideds - perhaps as an anti-Hillary vote rather than a pro-Trump vote.

Yes, it will be close but only because of the voter suppression antics by the GOP.

Hillary.

Because Trump is orders of magnitude worse.

And this is the thing so many of the Hilary haters keep ducking. Clinton does indeed come with enough baggage to fill a luggage store. Had the Republicans picked a faintly reasonable candidate then they could have mounted some pretty powerful attacks on her. Instead anything that might raise doubts about Clinton gets drowned out by the three ring circus that is the Trump campaign.

Boing Boing has hit the nail on the head as to why Hillary is likely to get slaughtered when she debates Trump:

http://boingboing.net/2016/08/30/trumps-just-gonna-wing-the-d.html

Clinton must remember the wise words of Douglas Adams and John Lloyd, compiling a dictionary of common situations and things for which there are no words, and wedding them to place names.

Aboyne (v.) To beat an expert at a game of skill by playing so appallingly that none of his clever strategies are of any use to him.

It still boggles the mind that the haters mention Hillary's corruption and dishonesty as main reasons, as if Trump isn't all those things and more. Also, they accuse her of crimes regardless of what the FBI says, going so far as to accuse them of colluding with her, and of war crimes, forgetting that Trump promised to commit war crimes if elected.

It's just conspiracy theory level thinking, there.

I think this is correct for both sides. If Hillary wins, it is probably more base don an anti-Trump vote and if Trump wins, it is largely an anti-Hillary vote.

I try to remain cautiously optimistic about Hillary's chances but I also have some of the same fears you have about a closer than expected vote. Also, there is the continuous trickle of news related to her email scandal and her foundation. Regardless what anyone believes about her involvement and character, these continue to impact perceptions of her honesty.

The thing is the Republicans have spent decades attacking her character, I doubt whether any of these new allegations are going to suddenly change anyone's mind about her. On the other hand Trump's efforts to 'pivot' may alienate his base without drawing in any new voters.

Hillary, by rights *should* be done. The scandals are sticking to her. In pretty much any other election season, she would be done.

Instead, however, the GOP nominated Donald Trump. The man with no filter, who is dividing the GOP, and pissing off conservatives as well. As far as I can see, this is why Hillary Clinton is leading in the polls.

I also think that she'll 'lose' at the debates. Oh, don't get me wrong. She'll technically do very well. She'll talk policy, and lay out good arguments for her positions, and against Donald Trumps. Trump though is a showman, a con artist. a Reality TV star. He'll entertain. He'll toss Buzz words, he'll ignore the moderator and toss out accusations and insults towards Hillary that will resonate with a portion of the electorate.

Hillary can't compete with Donald on a stage. At least, I do not think she can. I could be wrong. We shall see.

It's also still early in the election season. Still a couple months to go of all this ****, more than enough time for Trump to catch up. I still think he'll win. I hope he does not, however.

Vote Mussolini! Mussolini for president!

The difference is that Hillary isn't like Mussolini very much at all.

Her policies are, by U.S. standards, centre-left, she adheres to the democratic process, she does not have the cult of personality that Mussolini had (and that her main opponent IMO craves) and she isn't a fascist.

Of course she's probably too right-wing and establishment for your tastes but then I expect that almost all mainstream politicians are.

IMO Hillary will make a fine U.S. President. She is more liberal than Obama and has enormous amounts of experience which means that she is more likely to get her ideas implemented.

And, she will pursue the goals and policies of the DNC platform, which is the most progressive platform in USA politics in recent history.

That wasn't the point. I was challenging the logic behind the way in which the people I quoted were defending her/deflecting criticism.

Then you completely misunderstood my post that you quoted part of.

I'm not arguing at all that Hillary is the lesser of two evils - instead she is the better of the two main candidates (I have restricted it to that because I do not know enough about the rest of the candidates).

It's not on par with Trump. His unfavorable ratings are 10 points worse. And in relative terms, people will choose Hillary over Trump.

I'm surprised there aren't more conspiracy theorists ranting about Trump being a Clinton patsy, playing a role to get her elected. He really is acting exactly the way you'd expect a Clinton mole to behave in this situation. How electable would Clinton be with a different opponent?
