Ed Olympic swimmers may have lied about being robbed

DailyMail corrected its headline. Charges for the two are recommended by police but not filed. I don't know legal lingo in Rio. Police Recommending Charges - what does that mean?

If I had to guess, I'd say that pissed-off cops want entitled athletes to pay for wasting their time, insulting their country (by lying about being crime victims), and acting like jerks...but political officials think it might be best if the whole thing was allowed to die.

A few headlines I saw used the word "indicted" but that's probably not right.

Probably in Brazil it is up to a prosecutor or possibly a judge whether to formally charge someone. The police can recommend charges but the prosecutor or judge needs to actually file the charges. I'm just imagining this of course, I really don't know haw they do things there.

Probably for the best. Don't want to commit an own goal by then having everyone scrutinize your every move in the courts. Get the public shaming in and move on.

With all of them knowing that the decision is important because if they make the wrong choice "America would be mad".
 
I heard from lots of people, the very best people, that Trump met with Lochte and advised him to say:

"When I told the Rio police that I had been robbed at gunpoint, it was a joke. They don't get sarcasm? Sad!

I love watching these poor, pathetic people on television working so hard and so seriously to try and figure me out. They can’t!"

I think it would be less about America and more about how they want their Olympics to be remembered. In a situation where little real damage was done, all that's left is the publicity and crime talk doesn't make for great publicity when northern hemisphere tourists are deciding what southern hemisphere beaches to hit come December.

Textbook "Ugly American" tourist. Get drunk, cause trouble, then get all haughty because "I'm a 'Murican!! Do you know who I am?!!" :rolleyes:

These are the people who give us a bad reputation. As an American who lives in a foreign country, one of my pet peeves is when I see tourists behaving badly here.

He first told the story to his mom.

His mom went to media.

Lochte was searched by media to tell it himself.

He told it.

It was a serious crime. Robbers dressed as cops assaulting people during the Olympics. By law, cops must investigate.

Cops went to the Olympic Village to ask the athletes to give their official testimonies.

Lochte and others went to the police department to give their testimonies. They were either nervous or had not talked very well, because the accounts different quite a lot.

Police get suspicious and investigate further.

Filling a false crime report or lying to the police in an investigation is a crime ANYWHERE in the world. Patriotic americans need not to worry. If Brazil kept anyone in jail, there would be less crime. Even if condemned, their penalty will probably be to pay food kits to some orphanage or do social work for a weekend.

They probably won´t spend a single night in jail for this "crime". 99% chance any half decent lawyer could get them an habeas corpus even if they had killed someone.

gas station manager say they first started peeing on the wall, with their pants down (it was already morning)

he told them to use the bathroom. They did not want to. The manager insisted and apparently the 4 drunkards decided to use the bathroom but destroy it to show their discontent at being told what to do.

Manager called security guard. They told them to pay for damages and called the cops to fill a report.

Cops were taking too long. Swimmers wanted to get away. They accepted a deal and paid only $20 dollars and $100 reais. (about 50 dollars in total)

They went away. Cops arrived later, filled a report but manager told damages had been paid.

All was well and nothing would have happened had not been for Lochner lying to his mother.

It seems one of the swimmers was married, so they invented the ******** story to justify arriving 7am at the Olympic Village. Or whatever. Lochner is not known for his intelligence and it seems he never imagined lying to police is a crime in Brazil (or the US), that Brazil has security cameras, and that his little "lie" could cause a small international commotion.

well... above all, lying about being victims of robbers dressed AS COPS.

that would mean either that the cops sold uniforms

or like people were theorizing at the beginning of this thread (Specially Ginger), that the cops themselves commited the robbery.


but more than that, lying to cops in an official testimony, filing false crime reports... those are crimes in Brazil and as far as I know, also in the USA. Isn´t that right?

North American swimmer Ryan Lochte went to the Tourist Support Special Police Department to testimony about the armed robbery suffered last Sunday night (14), when returning from a party with other three swimmers from the US delegation

Me? I have been spiteful ever since Rio won the games from Chicago. So I really wanted this to be another feather in the cap of "see corrupt IOC!" and as such I will only believe the story is false if the all the swimmers go on camera and say so outside of Brazil.

you americans can always punish Brazil for getting the Olympics out of Chicago (and saving Chicago billions of dollars) by pushing two red buttons and sending some nukes towards our capital. Dont forget, it´s Buenos Aires.
