Ed Melania Trump was an illegal immigrant?

Why would you assume that lie was true?

It apparently isn't unusual for young models to pose for free in order to get, er, exposure (though I wouldn't know whether that includes nude modeling).

Eh, some of us can't remember how old we are, that part I can see.

No, I don't believe that anyone forgets when they did something as significant as moving to a country 1000's of miles from their home country. Nor do I believe that someone creating a professional biography wouldn't doublecheck the important dates if they weren't sure.

I wish that I couldn't remember how old I am.

With due respect, so the **** what?

Let me repeat the point, without the metaphor this time.

What I quoted suggests that denaturalization is possible.

What TubbaBlubba said (and sounds plausible to me) is that denaturalization is probably very rarely used and only in the most egregious cases.

There is no contradiction between what Tubba said and what I said. He's describing how he supposes immigration policy is implemented, and it is consistent with what I quoted about what immigration policy allows. Neither of us said anything about how this fits in with Trump's rhetoric.

ddt seemed to imply that what Tubba said contradicted the source I quoted. It did not.
No it didn't. I misread Tubba's comment. My apologies.

I'm not sure about Tubba's "egregious". I can't judge about American standards in this respect.

But I remember from the discussion, ten years ago, about Ayaan's Dutch citizenship that it can be pretty harsh here, especially when it comes to "lying" about your identity, i.e., your name and DOB. That "lying" includes that an official translator ********** up the conversion of your DOB from the Iranian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. Or, as in this Dutch newspaper article from 2006, two Congolese sisters who had been naturalized in 1999, but the IND (the Dutch INS) had already denaturalized them in 2003, and they only found out in 2005 when they requested an ID card. What was the case? They had been naturalized together with their "father", but he was not their father. And the sisters had not been interviewed by the IND as they were still minors at the time.

In fact, in all cases of "identity fraud" in naturalizations before 2003, the Minister or the IND can decide to denaturalize without court decision: such naturalizations are in fact deemed not to have happened at all, because the person is not the one who is listed on the naturalization document. And that can happen many years later: here is a Dutch court decision from 2012, where the court sides with the IND. The plaintiff is a born Iranian, who had fled the Iran-Iraq war in 1988, was accepted as refugee in 1989 in the Netherlands, and was naturalized in 1995, and who confessed in 2009 tot having given the wrong name and DOB. Subsequently, the IND had revoked his citizenship in 2010.

I think that technically Yugoslavia (like the USSR) was a federation, so that there was a Republic of Slovenia even before the dissolution of Yugoslavia.
Yes, it was a federation. But the constituent republic was called the Socialist Republic of Slovenia. Moreover, it strikes me as unusual to name part of a country where someone is born, except when the country is already implied.

In a trashy men's magazine?

I think that the photographs normally are the property of the photography. I don't know what rights the model has.

But to me this is all irrelevant. While I understand why she or the Trump campaign would have exagerated her college education (even though 3 out of the last 7 first ladies haven't had a college degree), I can't think of any reason to misrepresent when she came to the US other than to hide something.

That's the point.

Along with the fact Melania's story about returning for visa renewals doesn't jive with her own claims to have been here doing modeling work on a work visa.

She was alleged to be one of the co-founders of the appalling child abuse site LS Studios.

Heck, it might even explain Don's donations to NAMBLA.

I'm sticking with it - Slovenia, Ukraine... - they're all Commies, so nobody [who votes Trump] will notice they're not the same place.

I not only remember the year of every interstate move that I've made, I remember the month and day when I arrived in my new state.

I sure don't. I've lived in six different states, and had multiple moves in 3 of those. I couldn't tell you the year of any of them off-hand, but i can work it out based on other important dates around those times.

Trump was claiming she had a degree long before he rain for president. He also liked to claim she speaks five languages. I wonder if that's a load of bull, too.

I bet one at least is baby talk -- "Oh, Trumsie Wumpsie, of course I like it when you do that." :(

Where models are concerned, generally as a result of some sort of prior arrangement or quid pro quo. Such as paying them.
No reputable photographer would even start taking pictures of a professional model until s/he had a signed release, which would likely include the method and amount of payment; even a non-professional (perhaps attempting to get exposure) working for free would have to sign a release. A photographer who doesn't require that step risks legal trouble if s/he publishes the pictures or provides them to someone else to be published.

Also, no professional model is going to get naked in front of a camera (especially after traveling to a foreign country) for free, barring personal pictures for funsies.

Didn't Donald promise Melania was going to have a press conference to clear this up? Why yes he did.

Donald Trump announced Tuesday evening that his wife will hold a news conference "over the next couple of weeks" to address reports that she violated immigration laws when she first came to the U.S.

Trump said his wife would prove that "she came in totally legally."

It's been a couple weeks with no press conference.

Well apparently Trump has advised Melania to let things simmer for a while:

Because, as Donald Trump no doubt knows because of all his previous press dealings, the media absolutely will not fill that two week period with speculation and conjecture....

Well I guess this came to nothing - what a shock

Another empty promise from Donald J Trump

A churlish thread even if true . Regardless , how does this affect The Donald ? Not at all . But list the Clinton crimes and you would still be laying charges at Christmas .

That was my going in position, that none of this was Donald Trump's problem or issue on the grounds that whatever happened, happened well before they met but a number of points raised in this thread have caused me to question my position:

  • Melania has been very outspoken, as part of the Trump campaign, as being a 100% legal immigrant - if it's a lie then that undermines her credibility
  • If her application for right to remain was based on falsified information then her legal status could be revoked
  • Donald Trump has made it a relevant issue by doubling and trebling down on the subject

But list the Clinton crimes and you would still be laying charges at Christmas .

Only if you did so very slowly that you are still attempting to find the first allegation at that time.

What crimes has Hillary been found guilty of again?

I think it's becoming a bit more imperative that the press conference to clear up how Melania immigrated to America happens. As reported, she would be subject to deportation under Donald's upgraded Alt Reich immigration plan regardless of her current status as a legal immigrant.
