Khan is Trump's Willie Horton/Swift Boat moment. It was the moment that Trump hung the albatross around his neck that he simply won't be able to get rid of (and the Democrats will cheerfully remind people of it regularly between now and Nov. 8. )

OH, the Democrats won't need to. Donald himself will do things that wlll remind people of it until November.

He's wearing Trump lens. It wasn't the media that voted for Trump in the primaries.

If i remember correctly they wrote stories about
Trump calling Mexicans rapists and building a wall.
Banning Muslims.
Saying McCain wasn't a war hero
Saying Megyn Kelly was bleeding out of her whatever
Mocking a disabled reporter
Suggesting they rough up a protester.
etc. etc. etc.

It's not the media's fault that none of those stories bothered the Republican base.
Seriously! The media was never supportive of Trump's primary bid - even the morons at Fox News knew better until his nomination became a lock.

What I do think the media was guilty of was giving Trump much more exposure and air time then the other GOP candiates because they felt that Trump meant ratings.
Jeb Bush was right when he accused a group of journalist of allowing Trump to play them like a fiddle.

I think the turning point for the media was actually when Trump had his post convention bounce and for a brief moment moved ahead of Clinton. The media suddenly realized he might actually win and stopped giving him a free ride.

To be fair, the media outlets are businesses and their customers like hearing about nutty people doing nutty things, especially already famous ones. Most of the Republican candidates were boring drips that even their own party didn't care about, and the leaders of the party flat-out hate the guy who ended up in 2nd place.

And to their credit, the media gave Bernie Sanders a lot of exposure, too, and that's a guy whose ideas deserve attention, even if the United States isn't ready for them.

The media chases ratings. I can't stand Trump, but he's interesting. I wish the media focused on hard news, but it has devolved into chasing whatever grabs the public's attention a long time ago.

Trump was the story in January and my guess he'll be the story up to a week after the election and then no one will want to hear his name.

It'll go down in history as the big story of the election.

Boring drips or not,you give them equal coverage. Maybe we need to bring back a version of The Fairness Doctrine.

Ugh, then the media will attempt to treat the ideas and candidates as equals. The media was ridiculing Donald when he shot to the top of the polls. It's not their fault that rubes wanted to vote for the racist man with a personality disorder because they saw him on TV.

Nah, he just finally got around to pissing off his own constituency. And then because it's Trump, doubling down and alienating them instead of backing off.

Demographics that Trump has alienated

Mexican immigrants
Muslims
African Americans
Women
Liberals
Conservatives
Veterans and their families
College Educated
Independents
Democrats
Republicans

Silly me, I thought the idea was to broaden not narrow ones appeal.

And now he's working on alienating the bigots and under-educated.

He's going to run out of demographic groups to alienate soon.

I guess he'll have to make up some of his own.

Silly you, the GOP hasn't taken that tack since the nineties. They've had great success eschewing the center, consolidating their support base and getting their members to march in perfect lockstep instead.

Trump's mistake was in assuming that pandering to the islamophobes would trump insulting a Gold Star family. Say what you will about the racist, parochial, undereducated jerks that make up the support base he swiped from the GOP, they do hold servicemen in very high esteem.

His second mistake was being unable to admit to his first mistake.

Yeah, but the people who do vote for him will SO VERY vote for him. Those votes are the best votes, really, just terrific votes.

I like to think he alienated first responders by calling a fire marshal incompetitant. Perhaps I am being too optimistic.

He's called two fire marshals incompetent. One from a fire department that got him out of a stuck elevator and one for enforcing a reduced crowd size his campaign agreed to due to fire exits being obstructed by construction.

I have doubts about holding muslim servicemen in very high esteem for these folks.

His error was different - thinking that what worked in primaries for xenophobic, racist, nutty, fundie party of Make Murica White Again (republicans in general and GOP in particular) will work in general elections. Nothing more, nothing less.
