In the big picture this could prove to be a lasting issue. The Millennials who Sanders carried HUUUUGGE! May take this hard, they appear to be a sensitive lot. A third party could gain, in ways not seen in recent history. I loved the last eight years, taking steps back is a bummer.
I would love to see both parties lose their strangle hold on US politics.
We shall see...

The millennials I know are horrified at the thought of Trump winning. I suspect that's almost a universal sentiment among millennials.

There is zero chance whatsoever that anyone besides Hillary or Donald wins the election. Outside of crazy events like one or both of them dying. I would bet my life against a dollar on that.

Big picture, long term, there will always be only two parties that have a chance at the Presidency just like there always has been. It is a product of first past the post voting systems and especially the Constitutional requirement that the winner receive the majority of electoral votes.

Do try and focus. I said in the long term. As in, not so much the present!
It could still have some staying home, for feeling disenfranchised.

And the only think people staying home can collectively "accomplish", is making it so the one the dislike the most wins.

The last change was a 160 years ago when the Whigs fell apart over slavery. A new party (the Republicans) quickly took their place. Though there has been changes to how the parties are aligned (the Democrats used to be the racist party).
