It is obvious only that the PLE were operating under the assumption that Knox was not telling them everything she knew. Other than that, the cop-players were probably all over the map. Napoleoni, the nominal head of the investigation, disliked Knox immensely and that probably coloured everything - right from when Raffaele tried to get Napoleoni to notice the pooh in the other toilet on Nov 2.

It is probable that when Ficarra went out into the Questura lobby to get Knox, that Ficarra was only operating on the assumption that Knox knew something. Ficarra's leverage was that Knox had lied about Meredith's drug use; as had all the other friends. They naïvely thought that no one really needed to know how much the whole cottage was into marijuana - even Meredith was watering the boys' plants downstairs that weekend.

The leverage was Ficarra saying, "It's time for truth," putting it out there that the PLE had caught Knox in that communal lie. Then the movement into the interrogation room, then the request to go through Knox's phone's contact list one more time. All in the search at that point - obstensively - for some unknown male assailant who had known Meredith.

It is fully consistent with this that when Ficarra stumbled upon the "see you later" text with Lumumba, not appreciating the English idiom (and proving that Anna Donnino was a horrible failure as a translator!) - and that this text was just before when Meredith was last seen.....

...... that in their haste to solve this highly publicized case, Ficarra, then Napoleoni, thought they'd solved what others had said they'd known all along - Knox knew that Patrick had done it.

And more. And it cascaded downhill from there.

Vixen, some of the items on your list aren't true at all, many aren't relevant to the case, and others stretch the technical limitations of truth. For example, it is technically true Meredith's DNA and/or blood was found in Filomena's room in the same way it is technically true I am forums poster bagels and/or Barack Obama President of the United States.

Usually in a murder case the culprit is identified by a small list of foundational elements that, if not establishing guilt beyond reasonable doubt themselves, require only a few ancillary details to corroborate.

We don't need a vague ambiguous list several dozen items long of half truths to note that Scott Peterson was lying about what he was doing the day his wife disappeared and was in fact taking his boat out into the very waters where her body would later be found. It's a core to the case that simply and strongly establishes suspicion.

The PGP thought they had this with Amanda Knox. She, a white girl, blamed a totally innocent black man of a murder that took place in her own apartment after previously saying she had nothing to do with it. This is usually game over and the rest of the case is just dotting i's and crossing t's. Except if we take a closer look that's not what happened at all. What actually happened is the police dragged her into a middle of the night interrogation, threatened her, yelled at her every time she answered a question "wrongly," lied to her, slapped her when she answered "wrongly," and got a fake interpreter to manipulate her with stories about how experiencing a traumatic event can cause amnesia and blackouts and she needs to tell them the truth they're looking for. Then got her to sign a per-written Italian statement.

So the interrogation is a wash and establishes nothing but the over eager police having a masterful ability to manipulate a clueless airheaded foreign girl, good for them but it gets us no closer to solving the case.

But actually like the Scott Peterson case and many before it, there is a foundational element that all but solidifies what happened. The cottage was covered in the forensic evidence of a burglar, and had a break-in that almost precisely matched another burglary blocks away this burglar had stolen loot from, which is doubly illuminating considering both break-ins were idiosyncratic difficult climb jobs involving large rocks and leaving a huge mess.

From there we kind of close the case with the ancillary details. A conspiracy that Amanda was involved with Rudy falls into absurdity upon any inspection. They didn't know each other and didn't even speak the same language. Rudy was secretly recorded before arrest and denied any woman being there with him except the victim.

She wasn't 'reporting' a crime. She was being interrogated by the police in the absence of a lawyer, being confronted with 'evidence' against her (the texts for example) and her statements were the product of it. They convicted Knox for them. The ECHR says they can't do this. These Italians obviously thought they could. We will find out soon if they are going to defend the position or if they will roll over like submissive puppies. Either way, they're cooked.
