Future of the Republican Party

Well the Abortion Wars are due to start in 2057.

Forgive my pessimism, but when I thought US Politics couldn't get more fun around the time of the Tea Party, Romney and Trump come along. There's something most Americans are reluctant to admit, that the country is ethnically divided, and when you have a dwindling majority and growing minorities who profit from said dwindling along with polarising rhetoric, that is a recipe for disaster. The polarisation could have been prevented with some form of political compromise between the ethnic groups, but due to the inflammatory rhetoric/actions of white supremacist politicians, it is far too late to stop growing polarisation within the US.

Who exactly are the "white supremacist politicians" of which you speak?

Have you read Unwind by Neal Shusterman? Interesting yet frightening read.
No I haven't but I'll add it to my reading list. Thanks.

My post was a somewhat tongue-in-cheek reference to the truly awful RPG Otherverse which is set in the Choicer/Lifer split USA of 2102.

Surely it can't be as bad as FATAL?

The Dixiecrats which played Kingmaker for the Democrats and GOP are probably the most blatant example.

The Dixiecrats were Democrats both before and after the experiment was over, so please leave the Republicans out of it. In any case, this is ancient history and has nothing to do with what is going on in American politics today.

BTW, in America there is a constant effort by the Democrats to assign their sordid past to the Republicans. Millennials are generally shocked to find out the Confederates and KKK were Democrats. They are also shocked to find out our entries into WW1, WW2, Korea, and Vietnam were all led by Democrat Presidents. (Wilson, FDR, Truman, JFK/LBJ, respectively.)

You do realise who has been a vital hub for the GOP votes since the 1964 VRA, or who props up "voter id laws" in a totally colour blind manner?

During the period that the Democrats have been shouting from the rooftops that entire generations of elderly and minorities have been "disenfranchised" by voter id laws, I don't recall them producing a single person who couldn't vote solely because of voter id. Not one.

How many results on a simple google search do you think it would take for me to find a study that shows the results of voter id disenfranchisement?

Two, three?

Third result for me. Look next time instead of just assuming there's no contrary evidence because you must be right.

or since you seem to like anecdotes better than data, have some individualized stories:

If you payed attention to media other than Fox News, you would find plenty of anecdotes and studies that show Voter ID laws have stopped many qualified citizens from voting.

Just taking WWII, do you think that the US made the right decision to fight the Axis powers?

WWI and Korea were also justified. Given the plausibility of the Domino Theory, it was perfectly understandable to support the South Vietnamese regime. It was a mistake, partly because of the mess that the French had left. A different strategy with more focus on hearts and minds might have made a difference (see Borneo in 1966 for another communist insurgency).

Indeed, the Republican Southern Strategy changed the face of US politics.

I have no idea who is shocking Millenials by telling them that the Confedrates were Democrats, but they probably need to stop doing it and instead explain that it really doesn't matter what political party the Confederates were. Or are you seriously suggesting that a modern political party should be judged by its actions over 150 years ago?

I do not look at today's Republican Party and say "we cannot trust them because look how untrustworthy Nixon was." Given how different today's Republican Party is from the Republican Party that elected Ronald Reagan, I am willing to say 25 years is a reasonable cutoff for judging a party's past. I realize that the number is arbitrary and reasonable people might choose numbers between 15 and 30 years.
