The existence of God and the efficacy of prayer

Still waiting on that rebuttal. . .

And I'll thank you not to use the word 'lie' about my description of the process some atheists go through. I went through it myself and I know that others have. I hope those young impressionable minds aren't taking your posts as models of civil debate.

What do you want me to rebut?

You said "it bothers atheists". You didn't say "it bothered some atheists" or "it bothered me, and a couple of friends". You assigned "bothered" to all atheists, and in dong that, you were wrong, and if you thought about it you knew you were wrong, and were therefore lying. It's only now, when you're called out on it, that you suddenly add "some" into the equation.

This is what I said

We could no more go back to being atheists, as many of us once were, than deconverted Christians could go back to six-day Creationism. That is the one fact that many atheists cannot stand to hear, but it is the truth.

I said many atheists were bothered, not all atheists. DON'T call me a liar again.

But do you then say that life has no purpose?

Imagine for a moment purpose driven from within. Not by some external patriarch fingering a blueprint. Now, read again what others say.

You are making a claim. .. there is no meaning .. , no purpose, no God, no afterlife,.. no psi, no NDEs, no miracles..

These claims that deject you so, are mere embellishments. The basic block is carved: vacuous pomp has been vivisected to flop without any authentic spine. There is no bone in the back of god; no vertebrae to the supernatural. Smoke and spittle were confronted; gainsaid. All the hoary claims so enamoured have, in honest proving, been found long fraudulent.

In a shell: the claims of the supernatural are all positive from the choir. You would dearly love to see them raised to respect; belying that famous disdain of science.

That you can flap a tongue to turn the burden is feeble. Are you not the bearer of this good news? Are you not the one in possession of favoured knowings; of communications? Do you not bring the story to us? Well then? Speak without devices! Lay your best on the table.

Ah, but it is all much of a much with offals past. Shoo; to your gematria!

.. theists claim that the spiritual realms lie outside the universe. Science was developed to study this universe, not what lies beyond it.

It is sweet that you worry about science and her limitations. You need not sweat; she's a big girl now.

.......I said many atheists were bothered, not all atheists. DON'T call me a liar again.

Except when you didn't:

....... it bothers atheists (and it does) that there may be something beyond atheism..........

Call yourself whatever you like, but you'll find this is the quote I was responding too (it's there in my post). OK, so liar irritates you. Would "bears false witness" make you feel better?

BTW. I have had many experiences that (for me) cannot be properly explained by any of these arguments. However, the "rational explanations" get taken to such extremes that they would "explain" a true miracle happening right in front of them and many others. Mass hypnosis would be one.

Classic argument from emojions.

One very important thing with science is that when science does not know something, they admit it. Now, they may have some ideas which they can also state as well. In addition, science tries to explore those things it does not know.

Religion claims to have answers but they have no evidence behind those explanations behind those answers.

The specific were right there in the quote box in my post. Every single thing you said was a feeling, not a point of reasoning. Are you now trying to claim that there was something rational somewhere in that pile of feelings? That would just be absurd... not only the claim itself, but also the reversal, after you were just so open and unabashed about making it perfectly clearly all about feelings with no disguise when you first wrote it. It's like you can't remember, or even see, your own words. Any rationality you appear to now wish you had put in there is something you quite obviously and unmistakably weren't even trying for originally. Nowhere near having any resemblance at all. If you want to now start contending that that pile of feelings contained something rational, quote it and show how on Earth it qualifies.

"Feelings feelings feelings... ←hey, look at that totally rational point I just made!" :boggled:

Stereoscopic vision discovers real information about the same reality that monoscopic vision does, just more of it at once. Where is the additional real information about reality that religion discovers and rational/scientific processes do not?
That would be the stuff made up purely in the mind of the believer. A very common failure of humans....

They have to take them to extremes, or call us liars or deluded, because otherwise they'd have to accept the screamingly obvious fact that spiritual experiences are a very common feature of the lives of millions of sane, rational people. Religious belief itself is almost universal on a world scale (although religious practice has reduced in the west, largely, I suspect due to the media). It's militant atheists and the like who are the outliers.

Why can people have such different spiritual experiences?

Some people might have a spiritual experience that one should love and accept all people. Another might have a spiritual experience experience where one needs to punish, even kill, those of certain groups.

Reminds me a lot of people who claim to have close encounters will aliens. Some see completely looking aliens than others. Some are nice and talk about world peace. Others, well, probe where the sun does not shine :D

If there is an all powerful being, I am sure he/she/it knows how to convince me. Might not be able to use it to convince anybody else but could at leas convince me.

This is what you don't seem to get. You don't get to dictate the terms of eternal life. You don't get to dictate to the creator how you want it to be.

But you do get to have your way. ;)

Jesus said "many will be deceived"

But, if the one people are following is killing innocent people, that would be the clue that he might be a deceiver.

Yes, people like that are a distraction, buzzing about us like flies. I've swotted a few in the past but in truth they're not worth even that effort. I find if I don't even read their posts I can ignore them quite easily.:D

Just because lots of people have unprovable and frequently silly beliefs is a perfectly good reason to consider them gullible/having difficulties even if they are otherwise perfectly nice. Moreso if they are not.

The problem is of course who is considered innocent.
For example, are people who are gay innocent?
Are those of other faiths (or no faith) who disagree innocent?

In addition, William Lane Craig defends the killing of the Canaanites, including their children.
Granted, historically all of the evidence seems to be that it never happened. Instead it appears as if the Canaanites slowly evolved into the Proto-Isrealites.

Throughout the New Testament and Old Testament, various figures demonstrated the power of God. Granted, many of those today are parlor tricks James Randi could demonstrate easily in many cases.

Still, if they can show the power of God with these great abilities, why does there seem a dearth of that today.

It's just that I'd define 'within' differently from some of you. Our connection to God is within us.

You are a frustrating fellow. Clearly you saw my point and replied tritely to undermine it. My within does not have an external factor. Yours does. Well done, you excel at foggery.

Noticed, too, was what you did not reply to.

In all, your contributions to your faith on this forum have been ineffective. Every point you have brought is a veil of sham and steam. We operate a small five volt battery fan to clear your emanations; it is not a strain. Witness the quality supporters you have drawn: petty sniping robots who reset like software when their scopes exceed the bound of their bibles.

Have you no pride? Can you and the God Of The Universe do no better? Perhaps Aquaman would be a better choice, or that dude with the underpants on the outside.

You think Christians think its okay to kill these people?
You think Jesus would endorse killing these people who suffer from sin as all others?

I think once again you have the wrong religion.

I think Christians have demonstrated over the centuries that they are more than happy to kill people who refuse to convert or who have opposing beliefs..

I don't think Jesus character depicted in the bible would care about the killing were he real.

Slaying people did not offend him as is clear in the parable told in Luke.

19:27 But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.

He had no problem raising cities.Luke again.

10:14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.
10:15 Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

Paul explained how people would be killed with a worse punishment than that typical in the Old testament for ignoring Jesus

Heb 10:28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:
10:29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

There are also numerous references to Jesus relishing the 'great barbecue to come.'

I think you are looking at your religion with rose tinted glasses.
