If Hawaii were to have a referendum and the current flag beat a flag, say, with Magnum PI's face on it, would the Guardian similarly talk up its strong links to the UK?

Almost certainly not. I expect Guardian journos are utterly unaware of the flag, excpet in the unlikely event that they're Hawaii Five-0 fans...

Good, now we can do it properly and get a good design when we tell Charlie boy where to stick his crown rather being stuck with the corporate logo on a tea towel that Johnny wanted to stick us with as his legacy.

The vote wasn't to retain the existing flag so much as a vote against the alternative.

Its a shame that 56% of kiwis lack vision. It makes you wonder how we can make movies like LOTR and The Hobbit.

Mind you, there was a groundswell of naysayers against the making of those movies here, mainly by Trade Union supporting Liberal whackos. Maybe we can make movies like that in spite of our lack of imagination, but it seems we don't have the collective courage to kick The Old Country into touch. We are, after all, less that 200 years old; maybe its too early to cut the apron strings.

For what my advice is worth, maybe you chaps could start by writing a constitution for yourselves.

Nice

Tuvalu, in the south Pacific, dropped the union jack from its flag in January 1996 but reinstated it 15 months later, after Bikenibeu Paeniu was elected prime minister. "It's the flag our people wanted in the first place," he said at the time. "The new flag was never taken to the people for their views. This is the respect for the fathers of our nation. The flag is our symbol, a symbol of our unity
