Naturalism, 'Materialism' vs Dualism and teh Gap

……that’s seriously strange, cause as of right now, experimental physics has not produced a single anything at the most basic levels of reality. There are various particles (no ‘single this that or the other’) and various properties (spin, charge, mass)…all of which seem to disappear into some incomprehensible nothingness that nobody has yet acquired the slightest capacity to understand (just try and find a single physicist who can explain the origins of QM).

(...meaning, of course, that it is not 95% of the universe that is a mystery, it is 100%...but why quibble).

I find it quite interesting that you think this is some sort of death knell for materialism, while the explicitly materialist experts on the subject seem to have no issue with it.

Now, I wonder why that might be.

IOW…there simply does not exist anything remotely resembling a ‘single substrate’ (certainly not anything that can be experimentally differentiated)…not by any stretch of whatever metaphysics it is that is used to define whatever it is that physicists are attempting to describe.

Yes, there does appear to be a single substrate. You can tell, because physics works.

So why don’t you take your blindingly non-existent ego and show us how much of a fool you most certainly are not… and tell everyone how you intend to ‘prove’ that materialism is accurate…

I have already been over this multiple times. Why is it that none of the anti-materialist responders in this thread seem capable of actually reading the posts they claim to be responding to?

The universe behaves as though it is real, external, and monist. We designate this monist substance "matter", and thus have materialism. That is all that is required. Unless you can demonstrate some means by which either the universe does not behave in a such a way, anything else is worthless.

Experimental physics produced, among countless other things, the computer you're using to type this stuff right now. The transistors inside it are at the very border of quantum mechanics; so very small that if made smaller, they would fail to work because the electrons would quantum tunnel through the base.

The GPS in most cars requires general relativity to function properly, because the difference in gravity and speed at geosynchronous orbit is great enough that their clocks run at a different rate than ours on the ground.

Modern vaccines require a deep understanding of chemical biology, so that you can use a small enough amount of infectious particles that they can't make you sick, but you add other chemicals that cause your immune system to register those particles and make you immune. Chemistry is just applied physics, after all.

To say that experimental physics produced nothing is to say that nothing of modern society exists at all.

Do you know how you operate and are constructed? Since you, yourself, are 100% composed of that which there is absolutely no understanding of (basically…quantum this and that)…there would seem to be a rather significant gap in your identity…dontcha think?

The "we don't know everything, therefore..." argument gets so tedious.

Do you know how a car functions? (maybe you do but lots of people don't)

Nonetheless, cars function.

So far, the world is observable and we can map many of its functions objectively and repeatably. That is what materialism is about, and it works.

I once encountered a five year-old boy who spoke thus: ‘God has all our dreams in mind.’ Assuming this boy is not insane…what do you suppose this five year-old boy knows that you do not?

I think he is neither insane nor has some great insight. He either heard it somewhere, or he is unusually reflective for his age.

Hans

People who are convinced reality is a certain way (JW's, materialists, dualists, immaterialists, theists, panpsychics, computationalists, etc.) are usually talking out of their ass.

Hello,
How does that actually contribute to this conversation?

Was that an assertion made in this thread?

Or are you just a drive by?

The "we don't know everything, therefore..." argument gets so tedious.
I can't describe the tortuous network path this message traverses to get to ISF's servers, and from thence to your computer. I can't even tell you how many pieces it may be split into en route.

Therefore I'm not posting right now.

. . . except in the case of materialism there is something we have missed - we have not found any matter, we have not found any matter outside of our being aware of it. This does not make Materialism wrong or an error, it is a description of how we see not what we see.

It appears that the universe is composed of energy, energy and matter and the same. They are not different in nature, just words used.
:)

Yah reality bites, and why Materialism is an assertion, a reasonable assertion, but an assertion none the less.

Did you read the OP?

Naturalism leads to 'materialism', in that the universe appears to be composed of energy/matter.

It appears that way, where is the assertion you are disagreeing with?

there is no evidence of matter . . . as nonpariel suggests: "we experience something, and we call it matter" . . . it's a description of how we see, not what we see. Also as nonpariel says "I am not certain why so many people have issues understanding this." - - - this cuts both ways.

Ah so is your issue that you can preform electron or alpha particle scattering experiment?
Or is your issue that they reflect the behavior of the apparent universe?

The apparent universe appears to behave this way, naturalism.

The only information one has about the external world comes through the senses. No conclusions based on sense-data are immune from error. Appeals to the validity of some bit of sense-data can only be made by appealing to some other bit of sense-data, which is either assumed to be valid, or whose validity depends on some other bit of sense-data: hopelessly circular reasoning with no stable foundation. There is no reason to assume science is contingent on reality being a certain way; science in a computer simulation could be identical to science in a world of external material stuff.

That is an ontology issue and untestable in any system.
All we have is what appears

I find it quite interesting that you think this is some sort of death knell for materialism, while the explicitly materialist experts on the subject seem to have no issue with it.

Now, I wonder why that might be.

Explicitly materialist experts? Wow…I didn’t know there were such people. Why don’t you give us a few names Nonpareil. Who, exactly, are these ‘explicitly materialist experts’.

Yes, there does appear to be a single substrate. You can tell, because physics works.

Correction…YOU can tell. Besides my theoretical physicist buddy I’ve a family member who’s a physics prof. at Cambridge. I can unconditionally guarantee that he would find your conclusion absolutely ludicrous.

…but I am being premature. Perhaps you are a genius and know something about physics that a physics professor at Cambridge does not know. So…explain it to us Nonpareil…how, exactly, is it possible to conclude that the entirety of reality is of some singular nature merely based on the (apparent) functionality of a subcategory of an epistemology we call science? I’m sure my relative will be very interested to discover how his professional activities explicitly implicate the fabric of time and space.

I have already been over this multiple times. Why is it that none of the anti-materialist responders in this thread seem capable of actually reading the posts they claim to be responding to?

…ahhh…the old “I’ve been over this a million times before” argument. Translation: “As usual I said way more than I should and I can’t back it up but I can pretend that I’ve explained everything before and maybe he’ll go away.”

You said you could prove that materialism is accurate. So prove it…don’t wave your hands about like an epileptic on an ant hill.

To say that experimental physics produced nothing is to say that nothing of modern society exists at all.

…except I didn’t say experimental physics had produced nothing.

Nonetheless, cars function.

…but we aren’t talking about cars. We are talking about you. You, personally, and what you do…or do not, know about what you are. Whether you call it ‘scientific’ knowledge or ‘emotional’ knowledge or some other variety of knowledge, it is knowledge about you. You may very well not need to know how a car works in order to drive one…but it would be blatantly stupid to say the same thing about you.

I think he is neither insane nor has some great insight. He either heard it somewhere, or he is unusually reflective for his age.

Hans

…or he knows something about ‘what it means to be a human being’ that you don’t know. Meaning…there are things about ‘you’ that you could know…but that you do not know. Is that a possibility?

It appears that the universe is composed of energy, energy and matter and the same. They are not different in nature, just words used.

The universe most certainly does not appear to be composed of ‘energy / matter’. That just begs the question doesn’t it. ‘As it appears’ to who…or what? A two year old, a theoretical physicist, a deaf blind mute, a rock star, a dementia patient?

As I pointed out above, the more explicitly physicists examine what you folks so desperately refer to as ‘matter’…the more they discover that there is no such thing.

To begin with, Nonpareils assertion that there is ‘a single substrate’ (matter) is experimentally supported by a grand total of absolutely nothing. What is supported experimentally (…what ‘appears’ to be there) are a range of particles and their various properties (what kind of ‘thing’ is a 'property' at that level?)…all of which disappear into some impenetrable nothingness that, according to certain theories and experiments, exists as some manner of ‘information’.

So…if it ‘appears’ as if that which exists at the most basic known levels is ‘information’… (as opposed to ‘matter’) does that change anything. Not really…except that idealism becomes more likely as a metaphysical paradigm.

Okay so let's look at this another way.

How exactly are we to prove an interaction between our sense and whatever is outside them?

I know some people don't accept the concept of falsefiability as a necessary construct but even within the framework people are describing this just seems massively pointless.

If there really is some asterisks that hangs over everything we know because it all gets filtered though our sense and the connect between our sense and reality can't be proved because that proof will by definition get filter through the very thing it's supposed to prove (Which really is nothing more then yet another variation on the "Define something as itself and use that definition as proof" game) then that asterisks will be there forever by definition.

So what? What now? Someone seriously answer that question. Let's hit the I believe button and say we are jacked into the Matrix or something. What exactly should change? How should I change my life, either on a practical day to day method or on a philosophical level concerning how I obtain new information? What do you want me to do? Eat crow? Allow the "Science can't prove everything (even questions it doesn't recognize as valid) therefore Woo without evidence is totally reasonable" game? Put on a black leather trenchcoat and learn kung-fu?

Because all we've got so far is a bunch of people who either want science to just come to a screeching halt until they've dealt with their existential crisis or this vague "Science can't prove this one esoteric concept neiner neiner neiner"... nothingness.

So okay I believe you. Reality is questionable. And?

We just went over this, annnnoid. Don't tell me you've forgotten already. Information is not equivalent to meaning, and meaning is not equivalent to consciousness, no matter how much you try to pretend that they are. Matter as information is in no way support for idealism.

The rest of your post is the same tap-dancing, noncommittal drivel that you always post. It is a mess of incoherent questions, sound bites, and meaningless word salad posing as philosophy, and has been answered already, despite your pretenses to the contrary. There is no point in going over it again.

If you think that the experts in the fields of theoretical physics will back you in your claim that materialism is without merit, by all means, bring them in. Even your family members.

At least they might be capable of carrying on a coherent conversation.

EDIT: It's also quite funny that you seem to think that some other ontology is gaining traction due to its superior explanatory power, when ontological questions, by their very nature, have no explanatory power whatsoever. They don't even have any coherent differences from materialism, in most cases, and instead just try to play games with semantics rather than actually pose some fundamental difference.

All monist ontologies are basically identical, but with a different label slapped on the substrate. "Matter" just happens to be the descriptor that holds up best and doesn't require stretching a word like "thought" or "consciousness" so far that it loses all meaning.

It isn't until you get into dualistic ontologies and so forth that you find any ostensibly appreciable differences, and even then, these supposed differences are completely incoherent and undefined. It's funny, really, how dualist philosophies always come down to someone waving their hands and screeching about The Ineffable instead of sitting down and working out how the hell physics would work in such a universe.

And, oddly enough, whenever one of them does end up proposing a mechanistic difference - such as, oh, I don't know, NDEs being actual out-of-body conscious experiences - it utterly fails to pan out.

Funny, that.

So okay I believe you. Reality is questionable. And?

This is what I have been saying for the past several pages.

And nothing. Because the proposition is meaningless.

The universe is the universe. To say it is "really" a computer simulation is an incoherent statement, and I mean that in the most literal sense. It does not parse. It is meaningless. There is no respect in which the universe behaves as though it is a computer simulation. It's like pointing at a cat and saying "but it's really a dog". In what sense? How can this descriptor possibly apply?

The only coherent answer is that it can't. Again, this is just people abusing language. "Really" is such a handy word for argument's like annnnoid's, in that respect. It sounds so impressive and full of meaning, but it's so absolutely vague, because it doesn't require you to actually describe the conditions for it, but it implies that such conditions exist.

"What is the universe, really?" "What does it really mean to be a human being?" "What is the real meaning of life?"

And so on.

All utterly incoherent. All utterly meaningless. All utterly stupid questions, when you get right down to it. And all so impressive-sounding despite it.

Because language, sadly, is very easy to abuse.

Of course, if these were to be formulated in such a way that there were actual differences - "if reality is a computer simulation, we will observe effect X" - that changes. Then, at least, they're just the normal bare assertion idiocy. But at least they can just be dismissed, like that. At least they don't collapse into little piles of nothing.

And you no longer get to take refuge in materialism as a basis for arguments/hand waving. Categories of woo can no longer be dismissed wholesale, but must be examined and judged on their particular merits/flaws.

They have been examined and judged worthless.

Did you miss all of the last century?

There is no meaningful definition of "consciousness" which could account for the universe we observe. If you start expanding the term to the point where it can, it runs into the twin problems of not really being what anyone means when they say "consciousness" any longer and becoming indistinguishable from materialism, which reduces the entire idea to nothing more than semantic quibbling.

Well, you need a little care here, Nonpareil.

The assumption of one who sees or experiences consciousness is often used to absolutely declare that conscious processing must be different from unconscious processing. This may be proceeding from error.

Indeed, the currently fashionable theory IIT proceeds from precisely this basis for a distinction between conscious and unconscious.

Not all of it, but for a lot of it I wore diapers and wasn't paying attention.

As to the "judged worthless" bit, I'd agree except it still seems to be around.

Because error persists doesn't make it truth.
