80 Years of Subtle Sexism

My grandma has a tiger-print cane. It looks super pimp when she uses it while wearing her purple velour track suit. "I'm not sure what she means by it, but your cousin says I am 'styling' in this outfit. What do you think?" Damn straight, Grandma.

As for me, if I ever need a cane I'm going straight to a replica of Jafar's snake cane from Aladdin, I don't care how much it will cost. I'll have it custom built so the eyes are red LEDs.

make this for me!!! I am legit disabled and I legit need this in my life.

"Street rat!"

Sweetie you are still missing the point. The functionality of a male cane is a wooden one. When you go to the website for canes and you click under women's canes, the "male cane" is right there as the first option.

You yourself say you like the other one because it's pretty. You like the flowered design. The manufacturer and business knows that you'd PREFER the flowered design, so you'd be willing to PAY MORE for it than the plain one. Even though functionally they are exactly the same.

That's not SEXISM. That's BUSINESS.

Just like a woman who wants to make her office space pretty because she sits in it every damn day, and is willing to buy a pink or purple pen.

The question I'm asking you is why you are saying this is Subtle Sexism and a "PINK TAX" that women are forced with NO CHOICE (as you said) to pay more for the same object.

You chose to pay for the flowered cane. The regular brown one is right there for sale. So why did you spend more when you didn't have to?

The cane being flowered was my example. What I said was not by choice (not "no choice", meaning, having no other option, but "not by choice", meaning they don't intend to pay more for a different option) was the study I cited.

Women's razors and men's razors are the same, the packaging is different. I am not talking about scented handles or any nonsense like that. You pay more for the packaging. They sell it to you by showing advertising that this one flows easily over the Adams Apple while this other one glides over the knee. Why is the woman's more expensive? Apples to apples. That's what I was asking about. The canes is a different issue, I was explaining what a female cane would mean when it's at home.

How do they not intend to pay more when they do? Last time I was in a store the razors were right next to each other. I always use the regular razors.

The only reason I ever used pink razors is because my husband bought them for me so I wouldn't mess up his razor causing him to cut his face.

Where is this UNINTENTIONAL payment that's happening? They don't have a secret room where they keep all the men's products.

Then women are suckers if they pay more for it, and props to those clever marketing professionals who manage to exploit their idiocy.

Actually, we men do. But we don't like to talk about it, because "masculine hygiene" is an even more uncomfortable topic than "feminine hygiene". :boxedin:

Nah, my big question re: the OP is "why 80 years?"

I have a sister who insisted that "No Daughter of Mine Will Ever Wear Pink" while she was pregnant. So the baby shower was filled with neutral colors, black dresses, jeans and white tee shirts etc etc etc. It took two years before that kid was completely decked out in pink because that's what the kid wanted to wear.

My daughter refuses to wear pink (she's twelve), whereas pink is my favorite color. We women are so confuzzling.

I realized that we all dropped the ball by not posting this.

Fact is, advertising executives decide what we will like, then push it onto us even when we don't... Men deciding that boys will like grossly over-muscled he-men
But it's almost 2016! Surely toy manufacturers are more enlightened now?

Star Wars Merch’s Sexism Problem:
Despite being the lead of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rey is mysteriously absent from many toy sets—echoing past concerns regarding Disney characters Black Widow and Gamora...

The hashtag took aim at the glaring lack of Ridley’s Jakku scavenger heroine Rey from a Target exclusive toy six-pack that included her three new male co-stars John Boyega (as Finn), Oscar Isaac (as Poe Dameron), and Adam Driver (as the Sith junior lord Kylo Ren) alongside Chewbacca, an unnamed Storm Trooper, and an unnamed First Order pilot...

As disappointing as it was to see Rey left out of the Target six-pack of The Force Awakens figures, it came as an even bigger shock when fans discovered Hasbro’s popular Star Wars: The Force Awakens Battle Action Millennium Falcon set (retail: $139.95) comes with a light-up Millennium Falcon, a BB-8, a Finn, a Chewbacca…and no Rey...

The misconception that Star Wars is for boys still dominates the toy industry, Global Toy Experts’ Richard Gottlieb told The Wrap. “I can say that there is, in the toy and movie industry, a long-standing belief that a boy will not go to a ‘girl’ movie and that if you put a girl in a boy’s toy, boys will not buy it,” he said.

<courteously snipped>

<more courteously snipped>

This is why pink razors cost more. Men HAVE TO buy the pink razors so our spouses will not use our razors. It's not that we're selfish, it's that after women shave their women things, the razor is merciless on our man parts.

Retailers know we are willing to pay the PINK TAX and more, just for a reasonable shave.

Buy Clotrimazole in a box labeled "for feminine itching" and another labeled "for jock itch" and see which one is more expensive.

Then buy the same thing in a tube labeled "for athlete's foot" and see you've both been suckered.

My all-time favorite was from a CPO when I was in USN boot camp. He was warning us against getting "tangled up with some female and neglecting your duties. Remember, boys, women just don't think like people."

It is important to point out that being sexist is not the same thing as being wrong.

Why is the woman's more expensive? Apples to apples. That's what I was asking about.

And that was answered, repeatedly: The price of fashion. The razors work effectively identically, so when buying a "women's" razor, you're paying a premium for style. Nothing stopping you from buying the "men's" razor and saving a few bucks. That's how everything works.
