Windows 10

Yes, the big update does download a bunch of apps, even ones you've previously uninstalled. Subsequent updates, however, do not. It looks like you may want to check your system thoroughly after a big update, but not after the little ones.

Yes, that was my complaint. And, for good measure, it also killed at least one program I use a lot. I had to download and reinstall CCleaner.

I'm wondering why someone with tolerable footwear isn't making accusations of paranoia against anyone with an opinion.

Am I being impatient?

I'd pencilled in updating my laptop for January, figuring that would give early adopters time to find the bugs and Microsoft time to fix them. Having read this thread, I might put it off til the spring.

I lost CCleaner last night during the big update. Easy reinstall though and it removes all those apps that respawned themselves and can't be removed by right click-> uninstall, e.g. Groove Music.

Dunno why Internet Explorer and Edge seem to be running in the background as CCleaner wants me to close them before it'll run. the "Don't show this message again" option seems to shut them down as a matter of course when I run the program.

Yeah, that's what I did.

One puzzler in CCleaner though. It deletes the thumbcache files in Explorer every time it runs (which is fine, I know they respawn), but while all the files are at 1Kb (the minimum), one (thumbcache_16.db) is over a Meg, every time.

I've viewed it with a thumbcache viewer, but can't figure out why it's so big - nothing showed up except the normal .bmp image of an icon. So why so much memory?

I've never noticed the thumbcache thing before, Well, I've never noticed the details. It seems to have to reach a certain size, or a certain time has to pass before CCleaner deletes them.

If I open up explorer and let some thumbs spawn immediately close it and run CCleaner, thumbcache doesn't show up on the list of things deleted. However if I open up a bunch of folders, close them then go out for a smoke then thumbcache gets cleaned out. Three of them were over a Meg, 7, 8 and 9. No 16 in sight.

Got the following the other day.

Dear user,
In a few weeks, we will be making some changes to our email services that might impact your @outlook.com, @hotmail, @live or @msn email account. These changes will prevent your email from being delivered to the Windows Live Mail 2012 application that you use.
In order to continue using Windows Live Mail 2012 to send and receive email for your account, you need to install the latest update published here.
If you use Windows Live Mail 2012 on Windows 8, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, we recommend that you switch to the built-in Mail app in Windows to stay connected and get the latest feature updates on Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.
Windows Live Essentials 2009 and 2011 are not supported any more, and you will need to update to Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 10 and use the Mail app, or use www.outlook.com. To learn more about the Mail app, please click here.
We also recommend all Windows Live Mail users on Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 to upgrade to Windows 10 and use the built-in Mail application to stay connected and get the latest feature updates.

Decided to download and run their WLM update which promptly caused WLM to crash everytime it opened so that was usless. Their own new MAIL app has poor spam management in my opinion so didnt like that . Decided to run a repair on WLM to go back to using that for now but without the update its days are numbered.
Why do MS release updates that cause their own programs to stop working? Why is the help option and information for their MAIL app so poor and incomplete ?
Why do I get the feeling I am being used to test beta software ?

Only a paranoid sensible person would ask questions like that. :duck:

I haven't been as angry at a computer in a long time as I am right now.

My scanner wasn't working this evening, so I reinstalled the driver. Then I restarted Windows 10. It installed an update then rebooted. It then asked me to sign in. I've never had a user account on my computer that required a sign in. It took me a bit to realize that it wanted me to log in using my Microsoft web account.

After I logged in, I went to User Accounts only to discover that none of my previous accounts exist. For a moment I panicked thinking the files associated with the accounts might be gone, also. But, I found them on the D: drive where I had moved the libraries. I guess I'm lucky that I had moved them from the default locations.

Nevertheless, all of my user accounts and user account settings are gone.

Just to be safe I decided to back up my old user folders before I try fixing everything. That's proving to be a bit of a challenge since I can't connect to my NAS. Windows is screwing with the authentication so I'm getting an "Access Denied" error when I try to navigate to the NAS folders. It worked fine before the update.

Oh, yeah ... and that damn "let Windows control your default printer" setting was turned back on!

Thanks, Microsoft.

Did I mention that when I went online to recover my forgotten Microsoft password, the email they sent was in Chinese?

Windows installed a major update overnight and as a result I had no pointing device this morning. My external mouse wasn't working, neither was the "nipple". In fact there was no cursor at all.

My keyboard stopped working after (this?) update. Figured out it, since it had some SW driven features, its too old for Win 10. Got me new keyboard and its working.

That's ridiculous. It should still be supported as a basic keyboard just as mine is for the harddisk encryption on my laptop.

Indeed and indeed. I was to buy new one anyway ;) It was Saitek Cyborg and it worked "wonky"(?) on laptops before and/or when I was reinstalling OS and/or drivers.

Now there are two possibilities I see: a) its wonky keyboard, b) there was something in the mentioned update messing up my keyboard and The Don pointer.
