Shi'ite coup in Yemen

Arabsat suspends Al-Mayadeen TV channel over Yemen war coverage

MEHR News said:
BEIRUT, Nov. 07 (MNA) – Al-Mayadeen TV Channel’s Director Ghassan bin Jaddou denounced on Friday the pressure exerted by Arabsat, the largest satellite communications operator in the Arab world to the Lebanese government for its coverage of the Yemen war.

Bin Jeddou said the satellite communications operator has suspended providing services to the Lebanese Al-Mayadeen television channel, arguing the channel offended a friendly Arab country, in clear reference to Saudi Arabia.

During a press conference, Jaddou pointed to pressure from certain Arab countries, which, according to him, asked the Lebanese government to close the channel and asked Al-Mayadeen not to deal with the Saudi war on Yemen as a humanitarian issue and refrain from covering the Saudi strikes on Yemeni civilian targets. [...]

Luckily our "friendly" partners seem to have less problems with "Western" outlets who know what they have to (not) do.

So apparently the "operation" is kind of over, and the Saudis "achieved their goals". Which must mean that they were planning to devastate infrastructure, terrorize the people with a thousand or so dead civilians, and enable Al Qaeda to take over more land while the Houthis were pretty much unimpressed and not stopped in their offensive.

Even with hired mercenaries from everywhere including as far away as Colombia, a look on the map shows that the slaughter is as pointless as it was half a year ago. To boot, Houthis are now inside Saudi territory and even conquered a town there some days ago, sank IIRC four war ships, one Egyptian and three Saudi, and shot down the odd fighter jet.

An interesting group of people.

They coalition against them consisted of Saudi Arabia along with Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, and Sudan. The USA may have provided some logistical support, but no direct combat support.

So, you might expect the Houthi to have some anger against their Arab Muslim brothers.

Lets see what their slogan is ?

"Allah is great. Death to America. Death to Israel. A curse upon the Jews. Victory to Islam."

Israel has never attacked Yemen, and is 2000 miles away. America is on the other side of the planet. Saudi is a neighbor, and has extensively attacked. But no MENTION of that. Just "Death to America, death to Israel".

Hmmm.... LOVELY people. Death to the lot of 'em !

You can think about the Houthis what you want, fact is they have fought no less than six wars against the troops of former president Saleh, and now? Both are fighting together against the Saudi-led merc army which has the goal to reinstall the unanimously hated puppet whatshisname Hadi (and AQAP/ISIS). This is first of all about sovereignty, like so much today. Seems these guys dislike being invaded even more than your average people. And the senseless suffering is by the civilians who just had to survive two vicious storms with resulting floods in addition.

They had FLOODS in Yemen ? I thought it was... like...dunno... desert or something ?

Incidently, you keep reffering to the Saudi coalition as "mercs"... presumably you are reffering to "mercenaries" ?

What makes you use that term ?

Flash floods happen quite a bit in the US Southwest.

Oh, absolutely agreed.
But then things begun to go bad,and the Crusades were only a minor cause. It was the Mongolian devestation of the Islamic Heartland...what is now Iraq and Syria....that really wrecked Islamic Civilization.

The Islamic civilization was destroyed by islam itself I'm afraid :) Once its theology crystallized and muslims realized that the greek thought was rather an enemy of the faith it followed a continuous downhill which never ended (the relative prosperity of the first centuries of islam is rather a consequence of the fact that they conquered some of the richest regions in the world at the time and that, happily, the incipient Islamic civilization adopted initially some values of those conquered, parts of the greek thought included). Centuries after the disaster you mentioned the Islamic world still not managed to recover despite plundering many infidel countries in the meantime.

Travelling in the 'magnificent' and 'moderate' Ottoman Empire in the 1860s Mark Twain could only report about the black misery in which he found Syria and Palestine (see The innocents Abroad):

Rags, wretchedness, poverty and dirt, those signs and symbols that indicate the presence of Moslem rule more surely than the crescent-flag itself, abound. … Jerusalem is mournful, and dreary, and lifeless. I would not desire to live here. chapter LIII

Palestine sits in sackcloth and ashes. Over it broods the spell of a curse that has withered its fields and fettered its energies … about whose borders nothing grows but weeds, and scattering tufts of cane, and that treacherous fruit that promises refreshment to parching lips, but turns to ashes at the touch. … Palestine is desolate and unlovely. chapter LVI

I'm afraid quite much of the 'wisdom' taught today about islam is a fiction, the hated 'orientalists' being much closer to the truth...

It is interesting also to note what he wrote about the attitude of muslims over the Americans who visited their lands:

“How they hate a Christian in Damascus! – and pretty much all over Turkeydom as well. And how they will pay for it when Russia turns her guns upon them again! It is soothing to the heart to abuse England and France for interposing to save the Ottoman Empire from the destruction it has so richly deserved for a thousand years. …”

It hurts my vanity to see these pagans refuse to eat of food that has been cooked for us; or to eat from a dish we have eaten from; or to drink from a goatskin which we have polluted with our Christian lips, except by filtering the water through a rag which they put over the mouth of it or through a sponge! … These degraded Turks and Arabs. … When Russia is ready to war with them again, I hope England and France will not find it good breeding or good judgment to interfere. …” chapter XLIV

And now we are told only about the alleged 'tolerance' of islam when in reality the classical islam was a monument of injustice, islamist at the core (with dhimmis marginally better than slaves in classical antiquity, the fact that in enough many instances the situation of religious minorities was worse in medieval Europe cannot change anything i'm afraid).

It's classified as a desert, but it's not like the Sahara. There is rainfall, at about 5in (125 mm) per year.

There is probably heavy rain once every few years. Lack of water management makes what we'd call a regular storm into a flood producing monster.

I had no idea Twain travelled the Middle East. Thank you.

With all the senseless bombing going on in Yemen, the Houthis are now on full counter-attack inside Saudi Arabia. Two towns. several villages, military bases and the odd border post captured by now. The 7th Saudi ship sunk. Dead mercs from ten countries now, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, United Kingdom, France and Australia. While "liberated" Aden is being taken over by the AQAP/ISIS types.

Why "senseless" as an adjective there?

So apparently a single Tochka - that huge soviet era missile the Ukrainian Nazi filth used to fire into Donetsk suburb Babushka's herb gardens - hitting on a military headquarter of KSA "coalition" troops in Taiz killed 150 military people from 13 countries, among them Saudi and UAE commanders, at least 42 mercenaries from TAFKABlackwater and according to some the regional "ISIS" emir.

Good writer, this book is no exception. Not a big surprise that it is little known in this political correct age given that even a classic like Huckleberry Finn is under attack (people easily forget that Mark Twain had in fact strong abolitionist views in spite of the language of some characters in the book).

Finally i'm afraid what he reports about the Islamic world is overall correct, definitely convergent with the reports of many european travelers in the 19th century. He may have not been completely impartial of course but from here till the accusations of 'Orientalism' (in the sense acquired after the advent of Saidism in Academia, after 1979) is a long way.

Religion and the Rise and Fall of Islamic Science doesn't go far eough in my view - for example it fails to investigate the very important role of non muslims living in the islamic world or of muslims coming from Iran, still writing in the vein of their former cultures, in the early 'islamic' science - but overall is a valid starting point
