See, this is what gets me. There is a huge, open lane behind me, yet for some reason they see a need to merge less than a car length in front of me. (I typically only drive 15-20mph over the speed limit.)
My daily commute is filled with long stretches of road where the traffic is bunched up badly, where drivers rarely leave much more than a car length or two between each other. It makes trying to find a way to change lanes unnecessarily difficult and dangerous.
Worse, is that I'll often encounter these in packs, with long stretches of open road between them (caused by idiots in the left passing lanes driving the same speed as, or slower than, the traffic to their right). Someone will approach the pack and rather than just settle down at the end of it, will attempt to pass the vehicles in the rear, and squeeze in to one of the stupidly-small spaces between vehicles.
And for some reason, the worst bunching is in the left lanes. I'm constantly encountering traffic where I can fly past the majority of the other drivers simply by remaining in the far-right lane, which is miraculously clear of traffic regardless of how packed-up the traffic to the left is. That does not make the slightest bit of sense to me.
(For those non-Americans, traffic is supposed to be shifted to the right lanes, left lanes are intended to be used only by traffic moving faster than the lanes to their right, or for taking the overflow of traffic that cannot fit in the right lane.)
