South Carolina, tear down that flag!

Because the Confederate battle flag and the heritage it represents has absolutely nothing to do with racism, members of a southern organization calling itself Respect The Flag decided to festoon their personal vehicles with oversize specimens of same, and proceeded to convoy through predominantly black neighborhoods in Douglas County, Georgia. The festivities included stopping at the home of an African-American family who were throwing a birthday party for a child, and suggesting that they might possibly "kill y'all (n-word)s". Attendees at the party videographed the proceedings and contacted the police, and 15 members of the organization have been indicted by a grand jury.

There is nothing less racist in the world, than slightly inbred-looking white males in big pick-up trucks adorned with confederate flags.

*shrug* again, a perfectly correct use of the battle flag - and a perfect reaction to the people flying it.

And just north of South Carolina, you have this guy waving the Confederate flag:

There is a distinct lack of awareness, given that he was praising racist traitors.

In one post Butner claimed liberals and Democrats “don’t have a principled bone in their body and they don’t care even if our constitutional republic is destroyed. To hell with the lesbos, queers, liberals and baby killers,” he added.

I love idiots that keep living like its still the civil war era. ...

ETA no reference to members' positions this time... in case people are wondering

I think your ETA was unnecessary, but welcome.

They are idiots.

I know the ETA probably wasn't needed but normally when I've been involved in these threads it's been in protest to people painting large swaths of others as one thing or another so I figured I'd avoid some confusion just on the off chance.

The honorary mentions as of late are very good examples of the sort that need to have their idiocy pointed out... I got little problem with a flag per se but I do have a problem with people who can't get with today's norms in society and can't tolerate other human beings because they have different creeds and life styles. Very silly [bigoted if one prefers the term] reasons to get bent out of shape over the flag issue...

Well, it's nice to see the Heritage not of Hate in action. And that, for those who live in a theoretical cocoon and haven't met many rebel flag wavers, is truly what it's all about. A huge part of that heritage is just like this. Yokels and rednecks waving it in the faces of darkies to remind them of their place, to threaten them and to make them feel generally unwelcome.

I question the charges, though. Why not go for the low-hanging fruit? You've got them all on trespassing charges, or even criminal trespass (max. a year in jail and/or a thousand buck fine). Not solely... but make it part of the indictment since it's the most easily proven. Using the anti-gang and terroristic threats codes is a bit of a reach. The county is majority white, relatively lower-middle-class but a large black minority (over 30%). They'd be quite likely to convict on trespass; less likely on something with much heavier penalties.

On the other hand, they have solid evidence, and there's a good chance they could make the charges stick. And it's not just about the penalties; it's about treating the actions of the perpetrators appropriately. Criminal trespass is a pretty minor charge, and sticking to those charges just show that the clear intent of the action isn't being treated seriously.

This was an act of terrorism. It was clearly intended to scare and intimidate a specific ethnic group, for the sole reason of their ethnicity. And it wasn't just the work of one lone nutcase, but was a fairly large, organized group. Not quite the KKK, but certainly in the same spirit, and with the same intent. And these sorts of group actions have a way of spiraling into violence very quickly.

I'm glad to see that they're treating this incident and these perpetrators as the clear and present danger that they are. It's been a long time coming.

Sorry if I wasn't clearer. Trespass is ALSO under the same court's jurisdiction. Do not go for different trials, but stack the charges in the same trial. While I might feel it's clearly a terroristic threat, a jury of their peers is going to be listening to fifteen rednecks with the classic JGOBHTSF (jus' the good old boys havin' theyself some fun) defense vs fifteen black people saying they clearly felt threatened. They threw rocks! They called us *******!

If these kegger type bigots learn that they can do a year in county lock-up (or any amount of time) they may think twice before exercising their first amendment rights to be dumb rednecks, or at least think twice about keeping their own council and staying home instead of hopping in the pickups with Sparky and Dub.
