Maine Coon Cat has a long tail and so it is non sequitur for a conversation about bobcats. Please pay attention.
He said it had no tail. But I like your idea about witnesses being wrong. We constantly see Eastern cougar witnesses being wrong because they present photos of housecats.Unless the cat's tail is held high it would be easy to miss being black in color, please use common sense.
The further you get from the object the less likely you are to judge it's size, now add looking at it through a camera lens, and you have no scale unless you have a known landmark in the photo for comparison.

You're a flying reptile, not an Internet psychologist. I don't have to listen to you.I think we're getting down to the psychology here.
Yes, but you need to find out those details before you summarily decide that the witness is mistaken.

Since no follow up has been mentioned, I'm guessing it didn't occur?
Did you, or anyone, go out to look at the tracks or marks / signs of a struggle? Take pics?
Was there any follow up to the Edisto sighting of the cougar?

Did anyone go out and stand in the spot and have a picture taken for size comparison?
Pics of cougar tracks following deer tracks with a subsequent spot where they fought, would go a long way to support the sighting.

lol.
Rhetorical question, but gamer N L would respond here that provoking the beast in this way would likely result in death, so it is always best to act like nothing happened and then later make a harrowing story out of it.
No, none of us did because we weren't certain if it was still around and we didn't have any weapons in the house. My friend didn't call DNR until the next day, if anyone came out to look she didn't mention it.
Or I could claim to kill 3 cougars all hell bent on killing me, and then post a pic of a cougar skin with a hole in it to make it look authentic. That's a different version of the game.
The difference is . . .
lol.
