Jeremy Corbyn might actually win?

Really, Rat? Really? The best you can do to explain the (future) failure of a hard-left Labour platform is to blame it on the media? It's like it's a whole great conspiracy.......

What "hard-left" platform?

Really? Again.....evidence?

How about printing money, tax-and spend, live beyond our means, borrow, borrow, borrow.......all that stuff. How popular is that, do you think? How about leaving NATO? Got any hunches on that one?

You've made some a grand claim on scant evidence, none of which you've provided here.
I think this was probably the poll I was thinking of, but the Independent claims the same thing today.

No, I think there are indeed some issues where the public differ, of course. But I don't think I made a grand claim. The Labour party of the last twenty years has got closer and closer to the Conservatives on many issues, leaving less and less for the voters to choose between. On the issues where he differs, many voters would agree with his position.

So, a 2 year old on-line poll (where no-one was told the costs of re-nationalisation), and no evidence whatsoever for "on the issues where he differs (from the other parties) the public do actually largely agree with him".

It shouldn't be necessary to point out that this is a sceptic's forum, where assertion without evidence can be dismissed forthwith.

You remember, where Corbyn said about creating a one-party state that controls all of the means of production.

No. The one where he spends money he doesn't have. Where he prints money. "Quantative easing for the people". Tax and spend. Borrow, borrow, borrow. That hard-left platform, not your straw one.

Shock, horror, Labour elects a left wing leader! The right will demonise him no doubt, but they would have done that to whoever won the leadership election.

The Tories must be hard left then, because that's what they're already doing.

Here's another one, listing 9 items. I'm off out in a minute, so can indeed not provide more evidence. You may, if you wish, take that as a concession.

If it wasn't so important, it would be hilarious: the leader that few Labour MPs wanted, and all the Conservatives wanted. It could hardly be a bigger gift to the Conservative party. The upside will be an increased interest in politics for a while. The downside is another 10 years of opposition for Labour.

Just out of interest, who did you vote for?

You've got some evidence for this, I presume?

What about evidence for your own dire predictions?

I think you're in for a shock. Up to now, it's been easy for Corbyn's enemies to paint him as a loony. All that will now change, as it changed when Michael Foot and Neil Kinnock became Labour leader - and when Ken Livingstone became London mayor.

Now that Corbyn has the platform accorded to the official Leader of Her Majesty's Opposition, it won't be so easy for commentators to misrepresent what he stands for. Of course they will find new ways to undermine him, but that would be the case for whichever leader Labour chose, and in my judgement Corbyn will be a tougher nut to crack than any of the other 3 lightweights that we had to choose from.

You will say that Foot and Kinnock were ultimately unsuccessful in general elections, but I will say there were particular reasons for that which don't necessarily apply today. It's not as simple as declaring firm knowledge - which you don't have - of what the electorate will accept.

Were you against "quantitative easing" when it was the policy of the government?

You do understand that predictions are just that? By definition they can only extrapolate from events from the past. But, even saying that......here is the evidence: no left wing Labour leader has won a general election in my life time.

Ignoring the conspiracy nonsense........

No, Livingstone and Foot never escaped the loony tag, although Livingstone mellowed with age. For anyone to bring Foot up in support of an argument for electing Corbyn is just mind-blowing. The most abject of all Labour's left wing leaders and the author of "the longest suicide note in history"........that's not a good bit of reasoning in support of Corbyn's chances.

Bad for the Labour Party (becoming unelectable)
Bad for the UK (not having an electable opposition)

Well done all those who voted corbyn, you just ensured that the only person who can say no to more austerity is Osborne, the only person able to stand up for the NHS is Jeremy hunt, the only person who will be able to protect benefits is IDS. Good job on not compromising corbynistas!
