Have treasure hunters found missing Nazi train stuffed with gold?

Now two people, a German and a Pole, say they have found a 490-foot (150-meter) train they claim contains Nazi treasure that could be worth "well over a million dollars," said Marika Tokarska, an official at the Walbrzych district council.

Through a local law firm, they contacted the Walbrzych district council a week ago with news of their find.

But they won't reveal the train's location without a guarantee that they will be awarded 10% of the value of the treasure, she told CNN.

One of the two has a background in excavation projects and has equipment that can detect objects beneath the surface of the Earth, Tokarska said.

Yes, the value of 300 tons of gold can be described as "over a million dollars" in the same way that I can describe my weight as "over a gram". :)
 
Forgive me for being cynical, and even having heard that Poland has an established 10% "finder reward" for people who discover hidden treasures, I suspect that if the discovery is as valuable as suggested, the finders will ultimately see only a small fraction of 10% of it. There are taxes and I am certain a great number of governments and people will want in on the deal, such that the next few years will be very frustrating and cost the finders a lot of legal fees. Plus I suspect that a lot of distant "friends" and relatives will turn up on their doorsteps with great investment schemes.
 
I had to look it up. Gold is currently $37405.79 a kilo, so 30 metric tons equals 30,000 kilos, or over 1.12 billion American dollars, or just under 1 billion euros. Is this find, if true, enough to significantly change the price of gold? I am using the USA definition of a billion here (a thousand million).

It would be a promille of the amount mined yearly.

Ack, I always forget that it's "per" in English. Regardless, it's apparently quite rarely employed. It's quite common in Swedish, probably because we measure Blood Alcohol Content in permille...
 
I think the claim of 300 tones of gold is a bit dubious. To carry that weight it would need to be a very long train. Add to that the security guards needed to protect the gold and everything else. I suspect someone has moved a decimal point in that figure.

Also would the germans have had 300 tones of gold to move in Poland?
 
Hw did the Nazis manage to lose a train? I guess maybe they just couldn't keep track.
 
I very much doubt they have found the location of a Nazi train carrying gold.

I am less skeptical that they believe they have found the location of a Nazi train carrying gold.

Not really. 300 tonnes of gold would be about 16 cumet. Even with only 60 tonnes per car that'd be five cargo cars plus engines and security.

Certainly not Polish gold.
Poland's reserves in 1939 were 75-80 tonnes and it was moved to London on the SS Eocene, which departed Constansa (illegally) on 16SEP1939 to avoid the potential for Romanian seizure.
A tempting target...
 
They claim it is an armoured rain with gun turrets on armoured cars.
I call BS . If it was in a tunnel that implies that an entire rail track has been abandoned and ignored for 70 years. supposedly the story of the train is a local legend and people have been looking for it on and off since the end of the war.
Not one of them thought of looking in the tunnel on the abandoned railway that the locals must know about?
Did none of the troops and railway staff that hid it ever think of going back for any of the gold?

60 tons would be a big load for a ww2 era box car in Europe. I would say you are looking at closer to 20
