Treating Other People With Respect

The enormous negative feedback from the "Join our sorority!" message?

Why not look at the negative feedback and see for yourself what people were upset (or, much more likely, pretending to be upset) about? I think you even mentioned one of the things (too many white people) upthread.

But you said only the politically correct would interpret it that way. So, why was the video removed?

I guess they were supposed to go out and hire a bunch of actors, representing a cross-section of the culture at school, rather than use the people who actually are participants

I don't think political correctness is the problem by itself. I think the problem is we often pander to irrationality. I'm sorry but I think if you believe in flying horses(Muslims),virgin birth(Christians),reincarnation(Buddhists) you deserve to be mocked. You don't deserve respect, respect is something earned not freely given.

I don't see any reason to mock people for their religious beliefs unless they are trying to impose them on others (which many do). Not wanting to mock people isn't "pandering".

Who, or what, is that, exactly?

I would venture it's a colloquial term for those who seem more than willing to get outraged at some perceived wrong and then vocally and enthusiastically vent their outrage, often (though not exclusively) via social media. See: 'shirtstorm'; Sir Tim Hunt; Museum of Fine Arts kimono exhibit; lectures at universities/colleges by Warren Farrell, Christina Hoff Sommers, Janice Fiamengo; Protein World ads; etc.

You're not that naive.
Of course I'm not, but some people can't just be told something. They need to figure it out for themselves, even with a little help.

I wonder if the same apocalyptic reaction would have happened had it been an all-black sorority advertising.
Probably not, but all-black sororities serve a specific role.

Was this an all-white sorority by design?

Like the people who were upset by the Confederate Flag being removed the Alabama state capital? Or the people who were upset about the Boy Scouts of America allowing first gay boys and then gay adults to join? Or the people who boycott stores that say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas"?

Are they the PC outrage machine?

I think you're the only one not getting it (by design). Why not Google a bit and see if you can figure out for yourself what PC means?

If the sorority truly is all-white then surely the video is not what the problem is. That's the part I don't get about that story.

If they had a fair number of people of other races and chose to deliberately exclude them from the video then blatant and intentional racism would seem to be more likely to be at the root of how the video turned out than "accidentally sending the wrong message" or whatever.

Maybe there is a middle ground I'm missing..

Using the actual members seems like the best way to represent the sorority. And if they're all tall thin blonde white girls, that's the most honest thing to show prospective members. What fat/black/Asian/Hispanic student is going to want to join the Aryan Barbies of the Corn?
The composition of the sorority might well (at least partly) be due to racism, but expecting them to reflect nonexistent diversity in a promotional video would be surreal.

...It's a shame, I believe, that major dictionary definitions now define political correctness as perjorative. ...

Do you believe it's a shame or that dictionaries are defining the term as pejorative? I checked the online Merriam-Webster and Oxford definitions and they were neutral.

Seven examples to three. I win. :D

It would be. Clearly, they did not wish to convey that they were all-white or they wouldn't have taken down the video.

To reasonable people, you would be correct. My suggestion would be false advertising to anyone non-PC.
