As this is in South Carolina, I presume most of those people are from the South.

I think, though, you managed to go even farther off the rails than I did. Still, I wanted to say that I understood the point you were trying to make, however clumsily you made it

Yea, that was not my best performance of expressing what I know many Southerners felt. Hell, I'm not even from the Deep South and most of my ancestors fought on the Union side, so I'm not so deeply offended. There's one thing for sure. I now believe if they could not have fought with their State Unit and their neighbors they likely would have joined the other side. I think I also have a better understanding of why so many Southerners who had no slaves fought on the side of the Confederacy.

And to add to the previous post : I have no doubt some slave owner had a certain fondness to what they considered a pet. Like a horse used to draw a carriage. But I seriously doubt that anything beyond a minority went beyond that. You do not enslave somebody you love as your family. You free them. On the other hand something you consider to be a pet, not even a human, that you use for work and at your will, selling their offspring like lamb in springs, yeah sure they could have fondness to them.

But the premise was still they were slave - subhuman - possession - Still immoral as hell, and deeply disgusting.

Agreed. Of course my post was satire to illustrate the silly notion of, well yeah they were slaves but some were nice. They were still considered non-human and could be murdered by just about anyone and all that was required was to reimburse the slave owner.
