Today's bit of Confederate flag weirdness comes from the village of Gray, Maine, population 7,761.
During the Civil War, many residents of Gray went off to fight for the Union. Many died in battle, including one Lieutenant Colley. The family of the soldier wished his remains to be returned for burial in the local cemetery. So, the casket was shipped, but something happened. When they went to identify the body, it wasn't their son. The body in that casket was not Lieutenant Colley. They didn't know who he was, but one thing was certain. He was wearing a Confederate uniform.
Well, the ladies of Gray made a collection to give that unknown soldier a proper burial. They bought a headstone with the name "Stranger". Eventually, the actual remains of Lietenant Colley were also located, and they are buried in the same cemetery as "Stranger".
153 years pass, until last Friday. A Confederate Battle Flag had been placed on Stranger's grave. Someone took it upon themselves to remove that flag, and replace it with two American flags. The Confederate flag was discarded, and the wind blew it to a different part of the cemetery.
So, 150 years after the man's death, his bones are still an opportunity for people to pull cheap politically motivated stunts.
The person who removed the flags Is unknown, but a woman's picture appeared in the newspaper. A surveillance camera had captured video of the woman stealing a Confederate flag off of a pickup truck. They wondered if the same woman might be responsible for the grave desecration. The article did not say how the Confederate flag came to be on the soldier's grave.
