South Carolina, tear down that flag!

South Carolina fought under a completely different flag. Those who claim it is a symbol of their ancestors' sacrifice are misinformed, according to historians. Surprised me too.

The Confederate flag has only flown at the South Carolina capitol since 1961.

It was only supposed to go up for a year back then, supposedly to honor the centennial anniversary of the Civil War. But the resolution passed to raise the flag did not have an expiration date. In 2000, state lawmakers passed the Heritage Act, requiring a two-thirds majority vote from the legislature to take it down.

I'm pretty sure the average person couldn't even contort themselves into that sort of position, much less while riding Merry-Go-Round horsey.

So, I'll instead say this: I'm not advocating removing Confederate memorials from all locations, and certainly not at memorial sites, tombstones, or re-enactments. If anything, I'd rather we teach a fuller history.

My objection is that it's a ridiculous statue that we're discussing. And given who NBF is, I can only laugh that someone actually thinks it's something that should be there to begin with.

Do you ever see Tennesseans dress up as the Bedford Statue for Halloween? Because that would be one scary-assed costume.

That Forrest statue is worse then that one of Lucille Ball which got a lot of well deserved bad press a few months ago.......

What if those two statues should meet?! What if they would mate?!! They'd unleash a hellish brood of terrorstatues to plague us all!!!

Until that insane horse at the Denver airport took care of them.

God, a child of those two statues would be a nameless horror right out of H.P. Lovecraft.

No, seriously, we're discussing this one particular statue.

Yeah, I drive past it every time I have to go through Nashville.

And as you can remind any Confederates you meet, it's facing the wrong way (North). In 1862 Generals Grant and Buell chased the Confederates (the rear guard was led by Forrest) out of Nashville (the city then remained in Union hands for the remainder of the war). In December 1864 Hood's Confederate's (with Forrest leading the calvary, tried to besiege the city and got their butts whipped good by the Federals under George Thomas. Forrest covered the retreat/rout with his calvary.

So I maintain that the statue should be facing South, since all Forrest did at Nashville was retreat from it....

My god, what a horrendous statue. Isn't that actually a reason not to do anything about it - this being a fitting way to remember the Confederacy? ;) I hear, though, that a Spanish woman with experience in frescos has taken it upon her to touch it up.

And as trivia, the sculptor of the statue is one of the attorneys of MLK's assassin.

...Subject at hand, for a moment.

North Carolina's Governor joins in.

ETA: I expect the blowback to be strong, and brutal. So bring it.
It's a good week for the "Sons of the Confederate Veterans", surely! ;)

One of the best features of the statue is unfortunately missed by many, since most photos of it on the internet are from that angle. What you can't see is that his other arm is also outstretched and holding aloft a bad rendition of his cavalry sword. So Forrest is waving a gun with one hand, a sword with the other, and his horse is rearing up, leading the observer no choice but to speculate on legendary strength of the man's thighs.

Oh, I thought that was a unicorn horn sticking out of the horse's ear.

I went looking for photos from other angles. Each new photo I found added a new level of creepiness. Pure nightmare fuel.
