Why does the media focus on looting?

I don't understand why everybody doesn't politely play by the rules of the system that is actively killing them.

Well if they want to change or completely destroy the system maybe, just maybe, they should actually attack those who maintain, protect and perpetuate said system instead of those who just passively exist inside it? I mean instead of burning some random guys car they could be burning cops.

I don't understand why you think I said it was "the only alternative". Feel free to use the quote function to show me where that happened.

I've been seeing that type of :rule10: on here quite a bit lately. Where have all the skeptics gone?

If I see one more reply that starts with "So you think....." I'm going to e-vomit.

I don't understand why people are focusing on looting and arson instead of the person who was murdered by the police.

Because this might well have been the first time those particular police killed someone in their custody and so they should get a pass for it.

According to the photographer who took the picture of the white residents "finding" stuff, they did not enter a store. The goods were literally floating out in the street. So, the fact that persons (of both races) were taking goods that were floating out in the street, no longer in a condition to be sold by the store (which, obviously, was flooded out) explains why he used the word "found". No subconscious motives required.

The other photographer saw the subjects enter the store and leave with goods, and so he chose the word "loot". Certainly, it would be misleading to use the word "found" in that situation.

Again, so subconscious presumption of racism is necessary for the word choices here.

So taking things that don't belong to you is not looting if the things are in the street already.

How is the Warsay uprising analogy bizarre? People in both cities lived in constant fear of those that ran their cities who were abusing and degrading their respective populations that they deemed as subhuman. One rose up against them and got slaughtered the other is now finally at long last mounting appropriate retaliatory actions and it is dismissed by the pejoratives "riots" and "looting".

You have odd ideas about things that are supposedly false.

Regarding the highlighted, on no planet in the universe, much less this one, is burning down a senior center an "appropriate" response to systemic POLICE abuses.

None.

Yes they need to simply accept that the police will get away with it as they have in the past, and that anything they do will simply make the police look better. But don't get angry because of the pointlessness of your lives and deaths, that would be wrong.

If they have a problem with police, take it up with the police. Not a church trying to build a senior center.

Is this really that hard to comprehend?

I eagerly await your incorrect response that starts with "so you think...."

And as that has been notably ineffective for them in the past what should they do? Take a note from Mandela and start attacking police stations?

So the only moral actions are a definition of insanity(trying the same thing expecting different results). Nothing there that would make you angry of course.

Yes. - Attack, maybe not. But they need to deal with them. If I have a problem with the guy who just cut me off in traffic, I don't smash the window's of my doctor's office. That's not even trying to get anything done. It's being an ******* for the sake of being an *******.

So the only moral actions are a definition of insanity(trying the same thing expecting different results). Nothing there that would make you angry of course.

You specifically NEED to stop beginning sentences with the word "SO". They're NEVER a reflection of what the person you're responding to is thinking. Stop trying the same thing.

If you know what a rhetorical question is, why did you answer it?

I responded to it, I didn't answer it. You will note that I disputed the premise of the question itself.

Shirley, I fear you have fallen in love with arguing itself, and argue for the sake of arguing. Argument is a bad boyfriend, I think you should reconsider the relationship.

Of the two of us, I'm not the one with a reputation for intimate relationships with non-human things. :p

So taking things that don't belong to you is not looting if the things are in the street already.

If you'll read the photographer's comments, you'll see he and his editor discussed the sensitivity of the issue.

Here's what I'm committed to:

(1) Going into an unguarded store, grabbing goods and leaving is reasonably described as looting (though the desperation of the situation and the nature of the goods taken may change one's mind).

(2) In a desperate situation, taking needed food which is floating down the street, without ever entering the store, is reasonably called finding rather than looting.

The differences in the two circumstances are sufficient to explain the different terminology without presuming that race is the deciding factor. So, unless your aim is to accuse the photographers of racism, perhaps charity suggests that we ought to err on the side of caution and conclude the racial differences may be purely coincidence.

Clear enough?

So taking things that don't belong to you is not looting if the things are in the street already.

Just to be even clearer, the fact that something is in the street is not the only relevant fact in choosing "found" rather than "looted".

The items are normally in a store, but are no longer there. There is no real chance the owner will recover the items and even if he did, they are valueless to him now.

Willful misreadings aren't a particularly useful way to advance a discussion.

And as that has been notably ineffective for them in the past what should they do? Take a note from Mandela and start attacking police stations?
If they are victims of systatic abuse and degradation then sure. Set police cars on fire, burn down police stations. I would understand that a hell of a lot more than what's going on now which is nothing more than opportunistic criminality.

But the Black people of Baltimore aren't really being oppressed by the cops. What we have a majority Black population with representation on the city council and in the mayors office. The police commissioner and deputy comissioner are both Black. African-Americans are a large part of the police force. There is no oppression.

So all this talk about how Baltimore is like Warsaw and the black people are victimized...please. There are problems that need to be addressed and in recent years they have been addressed. We don't know what happened in this incident. So many are willing to damn all the cops based on allegations against a few of them.

So the only moral actions are a definition of insanity(trying the same thing expecting different results). Nothing there that would make you angry of course.
Yup, it really is insane to think that burning down senior centers, looting stores and being ******** is really going to make a change happen.
