I have encountered many black Americans who subscribe to a set of ideas about the "real history" of Africa.

Now I may be conflating a lot of different groups and ideas within this underground movement. I've heard white people being called "albinos", various leaders throughout history being actually black, and some bizarre obsession with ancient Egypt.

Apparently the founders of today's major world religions were also black (don't know how they could know that), and since we all came out of Africa, we are all descendants of "blacks" (here it sounds like they're inserting modern notions of race into the distant past).

They almost always have a conspiracy theorist undertone to them, plus a pinch of insecurity. I was thinking the history buffs here could shed some light on this madness.

Sounds like you're talking about AfrocentrismWP.

It's certainly not new. I think it came to fruition between 1955 and 1970, and has had minor tweaks over the years.

Skeptics Dictionary covers it here: [Afrocentrism]

From my experience a lot of it comes from a perception that Egyptians were black, so therefore by excluding many of the early advances of civilization made around the fertile crescent means that black people invented said civilization.

The core problem of course is that Egyptians were neither exclusively black or white

I remember reading some of the stuff put out by Elijah Muhammed, the Nation of Islam leader.... Wow. It was even more bizarre. It was remarkably like the white-racist bibly interpretation stuff, only with everything turned backwards.
Instead of the "mud people", it was the black folks who were properly constructed, and the various other "races" not-quite-right.

Easier to edit existing material than create new stuff. As cdesignproponentists can well testify.

Say, you know what would be really cool? If in the "History" sub-forum someone would actually cite something, because as it is, it sort of sounds like "Hey, how about them crazy black revisionists. (Thanks, Blutoski. Not that I needed the link, but at least you provided the starting point.)

I don't know if I could find a few links to cover em all. I've just heard bits and pieces of these crazy theories from Facebook and street preachers.

I just wanted to know if anyone more knowledgeable here could clarify.

Actually, most of what has been cited is pretty much common knowledge about what the Afro Centrists teach.

I don't cut batcrap crazy B.S. slack because a certain group advocates it.As a couple people have stated, it almost like they took White Supremacy Histroical BS and just changed a few names.

I found this was an interesting read about a college professor first encountering Afrocentrism.

The "Jews were behind the Slave Trade" is bigotry of the worse kind. Huge Thomas shot that down in his excellent history of the Atlantic Slave Trade.
Yes, there were some Jews involved but they played a minor role;the vast Majority of the big time European Slave Traders were Gentiles.
And the bitter fact is that plenty of Black Africans did pretty well for themselves selling fellow Africans to the European Slave Traders.
Sad to say that there is a real problem with Anti Semitism in certain African American Groups. Being a victim of Bigotry does not make you immune to Bigotry.

Don't forget Ludwig van Beethoven is Black too. Because of his mother, Flanders and the Moors and since the Moops are from Africa and EVERYONE IN AFRICA IS BLACK!!! THAT MAKES BEETHOVEN BLACK!!! Even though in his lifetime nobody called him that but they did call him a Spaniard WHICH MEANS BLACK!!! to somebody.

Indeed, the Nubians from the south were black and those from the north were white. They're depicted also as such in the Egyptian paintings.

The most ludicrous part of this "black Egypt" nonsense is the claim that Cleopatra was black. Duh, she was Greek/Macedonian import, not autochthonous Egyptian.

(Yes, her ancestor Ptolemy I was import. But the Ptolemees intermarried in the family or with other Macedonian imports. No Egyptian blood at all there.)

It's intentional commission of Category Error, in my opinion. Extremely dishonest.

It all makes sense now! The fortepiano, the prevailing keyboard instrument up to Beethoven's time, had the lower keys black and the ones on top white. With the piano, which was developed during Beethoven's time, the colours of the keys were reversed. That was Beethoven's doing, he was a black supremacist and wanted the black keys to be on top.
Thanks for this breakthrough in musical history.

Even the Liz Taylor version of Cleopatra acknowldeged that in a scene where Caesar(Rex Harrison) is talking about Cleo with his generals and Says:
"She's a Greek Macedonian...probably does not have a drop of Egyptian blood in her".
