Merged Continuation - Feminist Bullies Tearing the Video Game Industry Apart Part II

While I myself personally think trans people are mentally ill and will never be anything other than the sex they were born as, you can't apply that to an entire group of people that have nothing to do with what I say.

For example, I think most aGGros are morons and fascists. But I have the sense to know that not ALL of them are morons and fascists, and will give them the benefit of the doubt until they prove otherwise. You guys should try that sometime... I know it's so much easier for you all to paint everybody with the same brush, but it's pretty enlightening when you view people as individuals.

If she's not a woman then why are you guys harassing her?

I am not currently and have not ever "harassed her", thanks.

As for others, "she":

1) Decided to make a bunch of stupid memes poking fun at gamergate.
2) People turned those some memes around poking fun back at "her".
3) "She" then cried that gamergate was harassing "her", and started peddling "her" patreon account and begging people to support "her" game.

In addition to that, "she" claimed the harassment was so bad that "she" was forced to flee "her" house and go into hiding, while giving interviews and posting pictures on twitter from "her" home office.

So in short, "she" is a professional victim and now makes thousands each month off of donations. Simple as that.

Haha. Perfect neogaf style ****-posting there. Are you a mod there by chance? I'm happy to see that this topic makes you so angry and all, but take it easy there ol' chap. Would be a darn shame to lose such a kind poster if you give yourself a coronary from all that aGGression.

Oh and "she" isn't a she btw. Just a heads up for future reference.

Socially, Brianna Wu is a "she", she identifies as female.

It's like calling your adopted son your son. We all know they aren't your biological son, but it's a social convention. You wouldn't go around saying "Heads up! That dude is totally not that other dude's son! You need to know this! It's important!", would you?

Unless you're Brianna Wu's doctor, lover or beautician why are her bits your business?

Unless you're Brianna Wu's lover...

The issue is disclosure. An official magazine like Nintendo Power or PSM are of course going to be biased towards their parent company.

In general though, it is considered ethical for a journalist to either disclose personal relationships or recuse themselves from a story that they have ties to.

Somebody writing a favorable review or spotlighting a game when they were a play tester or their husband/wife helped develop it, while pretending to be a neutral third party is not ethical.

My issue is calling it either journalism or something that even rises to an ethical dilemma. If you look at it from an average person perspective, this looks like a "whore with the most dignity" contest.

To put it another way, what is the consequence of an ethical lapse in gaming journalism?

The FTC has no issues calling that type of behavior unethical.

There are billions of dollars at play. Would you be okay with using shady tactics to get money for your friends?

People with far more money and free time than common sense—who pre-order new titles based on professional reviews instead of waiting for peer reviews to come in—will end up prioritizing the wrong purchases, somewhat.

Ph, so they've actually ruled on the Quinn case? And they stated that "you shall not have a relationship with someone who product you mentioned in an article several months before."?

If there are billions of dollars at stake, why do you waste so much time on small developers of free games? How many boycotts of AAA games from EA have you started?

Interesting. Strange that there are so many comments about it being deleted and then later saying it's back up. I didn't think it was possible to delete a tweet and then undelete it

It isn't. If that tweet is still visible, it was never, at any point, deleted.

I don't think that's true. It appears to be a GamerGate meme. And it's extremely low of you to continue parroting it as an insult/joke, because there's absolutely nothing wrong at all with being transgender. Sorry, but I'm going to trust the psychiatric field's consensus on the matter over the opinion of some internet dude who hates Wu.

It seems Wu has chosen not to comment on the matter, and I can't really blame her. What a ridiculous red herring. Remind me what her genitals have to do with ethics in gaming journalism?

Wow. That is so deep. By making things up, you discovered all sorts of discreditable hidden subtext and assumptions!

Well at least you got some of the tone I was going for, which is good I guess. Doesn't change the fact that your entire screed was just one giant strawman.

It also entirely avoided, except by implication, in any way addressing whether my assessment is factually true.

Because you threw out assumptions as facts without any evidence. Why should I bother discussing the "truth" of some unsupported claims designed to strawman a group of people?

It also entirely avoided discussing what difference, if any, the stuff you made up would have if it were true.

I guess that depends on what "stuff" I made up and the truth of whatever that "stuff" is. Then again any actual discussion would probably violate the MA since I'd be talking about how those arguments relate to you as a person which could be seen as attacking you.

Are gators mere victims of toxic patriarchy, lashing out against a cruel world that judges them for involuntary celibacy, misogyny, lack of social skills and other woeful conditions? Are they merely symptoms of some deeper problem? Maybe.

Yes. Those are questions. Now if you could actually support the underlying assumptions regarding the traits you're assigning to members of gamergate beyond "I don't like these people therefore they have these traits" that would be great.

I'm pretty sure that threatening to rape and murder feminists is not an appropriate response though.

Agreed.

People with far more money and free time than common sense—who pre-order new titles based on professional reviews instead of waiting for peer reviews to come in—will end up prioritizing the wrong purchases, somewhat.

And what's strange is that those are the consequences at stake for the most noteworthy possible ethical problems.

The problems GG concentrates on are far removed from even that. The case that kicked off this whole ugly thing, worst case scenario, people heard about a free game they may not have otherwise. There wasn't a review, there wan't any money at stake, the worst thing that could possibly happen is that someone might hear about this free game's title, do no other research, download it and spend a few minutes having less fun than they may like!

Are you saying that cntdrv55 isn't the best choice of GamerGater to promote the idea that GamerGate is about ethics ?

Shocking.

I hate to personalize it to that degree, but yeah. I'm pretty floored by the sudden and nasty injection of transphobia and straight-up lying. As if this issue wasn't already contentious enough. So yeah, I guess your quote is what I'm saying.

Honestly, I've been on the outskirts of this kerfuffle the whole time. I have some RL gamer friends who are all fired up about GamerGate (on both sides), and so I hear a lot about it. Every time I've tried to join this thread in any capacity, I've gotten my head bitten off. And I understand why. New people who show up and ask questions ("just asking questions") are met with suspicion in discussions like this. But the result of all this is, I've mostly been on the fence. I see nastiness, drama, and hyperbole on both sides.

But lately, I've begun to lean more toward supporting anti-GG. Yeah, they may engage in their share of histrionics, obfuscation, othering, and similar ******** I don't appreciate. But the other side is worse. That is undeniable. I'm not familiar with the timeline, I'm not on Twitter, I don't know if this *********** mess really did begin because some dudes were concerned about ethics in gaming journalism. But it ain't about that anymore. It's about hate, punishment, discrimination, and ugliness. And this "Wu is trans" meme is just the icing on the **** cake for me.

Shame on anybody who spreads that BS. As if someone being trans means a damn thing anyway. Even if she were, so what? That should be no different than saying someone was born blonde and dyes his/her hair. Seriously. It's disgusting that people believe "she's trans" to be viable slander in 2015. It's absolutely disgusting. As is doxxing of ANYBODY, and all the rest. (No one "deserves" that, certainly not over some internet blowup about gaming, for chrissakes. People need to really get a grip here.)

My staunchly GamerGate-supporting RL friend who was posting in this thread earlier is going to be pissed when he reads this, but I don't care. One "side" is definitely behaving more badly than the other at this point. Someone would have to be either utterly blind or dishonest to deny that.

A quick search for "FTC social media guidelines" should clear up any confusion on what the FTC thinks about this.

If there are billions of dollars at stake, why do you waste so much time on small developers of free games? How many boycotts of AAA games from EA have you started?

I haven't started ANY boycotts. In case you didn't notice, I don't even post much. If corruption from EA or another large developer comes to light I will gladly support whatever comes from that.
