Presidential Primaries 2016

I'm not aware of any such requirement. Have presidential candidates done that in the past?

There is certainly no such requirement. Bob Dole resigned from the senate (as majority leader) when he was running for president, at the point he became de facto nominee of the party. He had already had a long career in the senate, and was probably ready to retire from that institution whether he became president or not. There may be other examples, but I can't think of any.

Looks like the cat is out of the bag. R. "T." "The World is on Fire" Cruz is going to begin the beguine with the GOP primary electorate (Adelson, Kochs, other billionaires) in his quest for fire. Banner day!

That makes for 6 solid dots and 5 hollow dots on the GOP list. I don't think all those clowns are going to fit into a VW Beetle after all.

Beat me to it. Does this mean he has to give up his current position as chairman of the subcommittee on Space, Science, and Competitiveness? That seems like a win. Unless, of course, he gets it back once he loses...

Or if he wins the nom, and the general. That would be a mouthful of poo.

If C. Fiorina says there's a more than 90% chance she's running, that's good enough for me. Dot today to the former HP boss.

It seems that fate takes a hand as one of our mentionables, M. Pence of can't answer a yes-or-no question asking whether it's OK to discriminate against teh gay Indiana, has probably had his prezzy dreams shattered for this cycle. I doesn't seem like he was going to run anyway, but this also torpedoes his Veep sweeps dreams too. It's important to note that every single GOP candidate I've heard from on this has offered full-throated support of Indiana's enshrinement of discrimination, but they have the luxury of not having to sup on the consequences.

I could probably strike through a lot of other early mentionables who have not made a peep or behaved in a way that would make them suspect for having higher ambitions, but I'll save that for another day. I'm thinking of T. Pawlenty, J. Thune, N. Haley, C. Rice, C. Booker and the like.

Go ahead and cross Scott Walker off the list.

He's allergic to dogs.

Sometimes, when a news outlet runs with a story like this on April first, it makes it hard to determine what's real and what's a joke.

I'm still not sure.

I guess Jason Horowitz over at the New York Times had nothing better to do yesterday than to prepare this useless story about presidents and dogs. I'm sure the future president S. Walker will have some sort of pet -- an iguana or a guppy or something.

That tears it. When H. Clinton signs a lease on her campaign headquarters, then she gets the solid dot. Let the games begin!

I'm going to go ahead and strike those once-mentionables named in the previous update who have made not enough stir to remain. Plus, R. Emmanuel, who has made stir of a very negative kind.

I'm having a hard time seeing anything come out of all this except J. Bush v. H. Clinton. It's kind of depressing.

Rand Paul announces presidential run

WASHINGTON — Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul officially joined the 2016 presidential race today, hoping to remake the Republican Party with a mix of libertarian and conservative ideals that can attract minorities and young people.

On his campaign website, Paul announced, "I am running for president to return our country to the principles of liberty and limited government." The announcement includes a video testimonial from his wife, Kelley Ashby Paul.

Paul is scheduled to kick off his campaign with a rally in Louisville, Ky., and then will take questions via Facebook.

Paul, 52, joins Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in a race that has attracted the interest of more than a dozen potential GOP candidates. He is also simultaneously running for re-election to his Senate seat.

Today we welcome faux* libertarian R. Paul (le fils) with a solid dot, as he is officially announcing his entry into the race. I think he is one of the more interesting characters in the GOP primary, as he has the closest thing to the kind of pizzazz that can challenge the party's usual procedure of picking the establishmentiest guy of all.

*Opposes abortion rights, opposes same-sex marriage, favors massively increased defense spending, supports use of drones in the US for surveillance, opposes marijuana legalization, etc, etc.

Rand just paraphrased the words over the gates to Auschwitz in his announcement speech.

"Work is the reward."

Rand's entry surprises absolutely no one.

Cruz is certainly going 100% after the religious right vote. Problem is he might be driving off lots of other GOP voters with his unending empahsis on religious issues.

Looks as if the GOP Primaries are going to be just as entertaining as the last time.

Really? I thought his dad supposedly supported the highlighted. I suppose they could disagree, of course... or my stoner buddy that told me so could have been wrong, I guess.

I got excited there for a moment. I heard someone say, "Guess who's running? Ron Paul's son!" But what I heard was: "Pat Paulson!"

A guy can dream.
