Continuation Part 14: Amanda Knox/Raffaele Sollecito

Heh, I was re-reading a few of my old posts and noticed some painfully embarrassing brain-farts. I don't even have the excuse of it being the equipment I use to post, my brain or my fingers did it all by themselves! Part of that is when I sit here posting I might be listening to music and I lose my train of thought when I have to start a new song, (or something else distracts me) and I end up mixing up what I was saying, but another part is probably that I have made these same arguments so many times the last four years my brain is tired of it, perhaps it's rebelling!

Apologies for sometimes mailing it in, I've been off my game recently. Here are two cringeworthy ones I'd like to correct:

That should read '...the idiocy that Raffaele called 1-1-2 after the Postales got there.'

and:

'...TMB tests were false negatives...' I also misunderstood Machiavelli's point, but I think I covered that later.

It's easy to make mistakes. I wish I was as eloquent as you have been though. My present frustration with this Samsung Galaxy tablet S4 is many. It doesn't get the possessive use of an apostrophe sign, so when you add that 's after a name it changes it to 'so and it changes the word sex and sexual. It's like it has some kind of morality censoring as part of its program. Never mind what it does to Italian names and phrases. But you would think that it would know better to change a capitalized word in the middle of a sentence. It also has the habit of adding extra spaces between words.

Ok, I'm sorry..... I should have limited the pool of correct-analyzers to those who are the hero of upcoming mediocre Winterbottom films.

When you can post of picture of yourself between Kate Beckinsale and Cara Delevingne, we will start showing you the respect you (obviously) deserve!!! :D

I thought you quite liked the latest Winterbottom film? I have not seen it but apparently it ends at an acquittal stage? Which is good considering how this case turned out, but do you think a better film could have been made if the recent final acquittal was known, or does it work well enough as it is?

Read what their lawyer told them. "They have no further avenues to pursue" Since when does a lawyer turn down potential new fees? He was firing his clients. My guess is that Maresca was always working on a contingency basis and now the pot of gold he pursued at the end of the rainbow had disappeared. His association with this case provided him with exposure that lasted for 8 years, generating clients and fees. Not to mention the chance of cashing in by seizing Raffaele's inheritance. But now Maresca's lottery ticket has disappeared and there is nothing left to be gained...so, he is "outta here"

It's to be hoped that the Kercher family didn't pay him anything. Maybe now they will seek advice without his odious influence, and find someone who will gently lead them back to reality.

What – I was referring to the images of the victim in the possession of AK’s fans. And why should I ‘distance myself’ from Maresca, whatever that means

I was only joking when I hinted that I was ‘The mayor of Perugia’ or an ‘Italian cop’
Or do you think I am a member of the Kercher family. Is that it?
Bizarre.

But no more bizarre than the underlying argument; That it’s appropriate that gentlemen of a certain age who are devoted fans of a woman convicted of sexual assault/murder should have possession of these images of the victim whilst their use in an actual criminal trial by the lawyer representing the victims family is not.
That argument rather neatly encapsulates the nature of the campaign.

I count myself one of those fans and I have never seen (nor asked to see) these pictures. Nor has anyone outside a very small and trusted number who have been zealous (and successful) in keeping them out of circulation so this little dig is wide of the mark.

I'm really amzed at how reporter write headlines that have nothing to do with facts. A new headline in the times has Raffaele declaring that he never wants to see Amanda Knox again, when I know having watched the press conference that he never said that. What he said is that he no longer wish to be bound to Amanda Knox. That he would like to be known for what he will do from no on and not from the trial

Maresca has told the Kerchers, as I previously posted, that there are no further avenues for them to pursue. Whether his advice to them is true - and it would seem to be true (with regard to further litigation) given the comprehensive nature of the exonerations most people seem to think has been adjudicated, the clear indication is that they will not take up arms again in this matter.

In any case, what can they afford to do, financially? I would doubt much.

The Kerchers were victimized by Maresca, dishonest cops, crack Rome detective Giobi, corrupt prosecutors, Dr. Stefanoni's fraud, and crony judges. If the Kerchers want to sue any of them, I will contribute financially to their litigation fund just as I did repeatedly to Knox and Sollecito's defense fund appeals.

And besides, I think Dr. Mull and Harry Rag and thus guy Yummi should mortgage their homes to help the Kerchers sue the Italian officials who harmed them.

Any word on Filomena's and Laura's reaction to the supreme court verdict?

I can just imagine Filomena penning a girl-friend note to Amanda telling her "So good it's over. About our comments - we were just kidding! We knew all along you were really innocent." :p

I'd also like to know if Giobi has removed Amanda's photo from his hallway gallery of Mafiosi and murderers. Then he can slink off down the corridor. He would be wise to do so before he is photographed in front of it again.

Arline again

I hope people Stateside can access the BBC video segments and watch Arline's little interview.

You have to feel sorry for her. She's completely out of her depth trying to understand anything to do with the case. And she's also clearly sick.

Someone needs to find a way to get through to her and her family - then this thing will be truly over.

Who are you referring to here? Amanda Knox has been finally and fully acquitted and her only standing wrongful conviction is for calunnia. A claim of violation of Convention rights in the calunnia wrongful conviction has been lodged with the ECHR by Amanda Knox and her lawyers.

There have been too many people lying to this family for far too long.

Hmm. What could make a person who had nothing to do with a crime sign a police-prepared statement inaccurately describing details of the crime?

I cannot believe the grief I've caught over a friggin' film!!

I watched it with confirmation biased eyes, and lo and behold, on the matter of the court-cases itself it matched my biases. That was a relief. I was thinking, "Wow.... an English film maker 'gets it'."

The other thing that was very good about the film was that it memorialized Meredith Kercher in a way she'd never been memorialized. Winterbottom put the, "Meredith has been forgotten in all this," onus squarely on the tabloids - Nick Pisa and Barbie Nadeau herself were implied as the chief culprits in that!!! It would have been impossible to be a father oneself, and not choke up at the scene where John Kercher, Snr., is in church memorializing his dead daughter. You could hear a pin-drop in the theatre. No one, not John Kercher, not you, not me, not a saint not a sinner should ever have to speak the words Kercher spoke in the film; and no father would NOT want to speak them in that circumstance.

Yes, it ends with the Hellmann acquittal, and I bet 600 of the 900 people in the theatre I was with did not even know about the March 2013 ISC (Section 1) reversal. The Q&A with Winterbottom afterwards asked him if he would be in trouble with the Italian authorities because of the thinly veiled theme of the film: the young students are innocent and obviously innocent, and Frank Sfarzo is the only one on-site who remotely understood the real crime.

The place where it falls down is that it is actually a film about Winterbottom, about the impossibility of making a film about this. There's a lot of Winterbottom-ego in it... not the least of which is the end where his alter-ego, Bruhl, gets to go off with Cara Delevigne and watch her naked in his bed, and flounce around in her underwear at a beach. It's a little creepy....

I was watching it with an eye to the court-case. Winterbottom put a few feet wrong, but in the main got the case right.

As a film, it probably deserves 52% on Rotten Tomatoes. Would I see it again? Who knows?

Tom Kington article in The Times

Tom Kington is the "reporter" responsible for the story with that ridiculous headline. To borrow a description said by Frank Sfarzo in another context, he isn't very good at his job.

He actually said something that suggests that they are on the same page. "He added that he had briefly spoken to Knox, who is living in Seattle, and had congratulated her after the ruling from the court of cassation came in on Friday night. The two did not, however, have any plans to meet, he said." The Guardian

""I spoke to Amanda recently. I wished her the best and she did to me as well. Obviously we are both very happy. She celebrated with her family, she told me by phone. We had a brief conversation on the phone which finished with us wishing each other well for our new future and joy for this result," he said." International Business Times

The digestion point was in Raffaele's appeal to the SC!

Komponisto, I just wanted to add to chorus of admiration. It's wonderful seeing you post here again. If there was one translation which was most helpful to me in making arguments (outside Massei) it was the C&V report you translated with help from Katy-Did. I couldn't even guess how many times I quoted from and linked it the past three years.

A very helpful translation of the Conti and Vecchiotti report

Your opinion is disgusting and repugnant.

Now I am certain I will be seeing this film, you finally sold me on it. I won't say just which piece of information you posted helped make my decision, just 'single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints.' ;)

 :) :D

Needless to say, it's enormously gratifying to receive such supportive feedback...it makes it all worthwhile! (I have little doubt that katy_did and our other collaborators will agree.)

Of course, we've still got at least one more translation to do...

And I must say, thank you for being such an insightful analyst, tireless advocate, and eloquent polemicist!
