DOJ: Ferguson PD descrimination against blacks is routine

According to the Justice report released today, Ferguson's police department has a long pattern of discrimination against African-American residents.

According to the investigation, by comparison to their percentage of the population, African-Americans were disproportionately more likely to be stopped by FPD officers for any reason, disproportionately more likely to be arrested during a stop regardless of the reason for the stop, disproportionately more likely to be charged with certain incidental offenses (like "manner of walking in roadway" or "failure to comply"), disproportionately more likely to have additional appended charges over a single incident, disproportionately more likely to be subject to use of force and police dogs, and the list goes on. Every single incident that the DOJ found of FPD loosing dogs on suspects, the suspect was black.

The investigation found cases of sometimes spurious charges, such as for "not wearing a seatbelt" while sitting in a parked vehicle; one man was charged with "making a false declaration" for identifying himself to a police officer as "Mike" (his legal first name was Michael).

Investigation also found a culture of racism-promotion, with police and other city officials exchanging emails joking for instance about how black women having abortions deserve to be rewarded for "helping prevent crime", numerous anti-Obama emails that specifically remarked on the president's race, and so forth.

More details on the contents of the report at the link.

Wow. Just...wow.

Anyway, the cophuggers will be along any second now to explain why this story is bogus.

I take issue with the idea that this is a binary position. One can be very grateful and appreciative of the police (cophugging, if you prefer) and still recognize that changes have to be made.

Agree.

"Cophuggers" here refers to the posters with implacable positions, even when LEOs are clearly in the wrong.

I think very few people here had good things to say about the Ferguson P.D.

Quite a few of us thought that in the partucular case of Wilson and Brown. ,though, he acted in self defense.

And since the Apostles of St Michael tried to excuse the riots in November,I don't think they have much business pointing fingers.

The US Department of Justice are the ones "pointing fingers". They have valid business doing so.

I'll agree with most of this as well. I didn't see a lot of people defending the department, per se, but I did see a lot of people defending Wilson. Which they had every right to do, as the evidence ended up showing.

Clearly they need to learn to riot more like white people, over sports teams or pumpkins, then no one would care so much. Roiting over people being killed with rather strange explanations, and people getting charged for bleeding on uniforms during their beatings is a black person reason to riot and hence unacceptable.

Riots over sporting events are widely publicized, and many arrests are made.

I can't recall many strong defenses of the Ferguson PD here. It had only around ~60 employees total, iirc.

Do we know the names of the people making these racist remarks, so they can be fired?

If you disband the FPD, I guess you get the SLCPD as a police force?

But they show the rampant lawlessness of white college students. Clearly more agressive means are needed. Yet you hardly ever see the tanks being rolled out on them or a proper amount of snipers covering such events.

Wow, imagine, the same PD that reacts to black mourners with shotguns and barking dogs, has some racial issues...

I take issue with your taking issue.

The way it works around here is like this. Let's say there was a recall of eggs, for example, maybe for salmonella. There would be people on this forum like this:

I, for one, fully support our noble chicken-farmers. They work hard to provide you eggs for little pay and consistently uphold the highest standard of food safety imaginable. There is room for improvement, of course, but chicken-farmers have to deal with terrible conditions, so cut them some slack if they occasionally go overboard. There are doubtless one or two bad apples in the barrel, but the overwhelming majority of chicken-farmers are stalwart, noble-hearted, and always clean.

Of course, nobody would actually say that, but if they did, they would instantly be recognized as having a weird sort of chicken-farmer fixation. But it's common to hear similar language whenever anything to do with the cops appears here.

Former cop Dan Jackson, brother of Ferguson chief of police Tom Jackson, has replied to Eric Holder’s press report on Ferguson.

Jackson sent the following via text at approximately 5 PM Missouri time.

DOJ’s “disturbing pattern” noise about Ferguson PD is fabricated, based on their own made-up parameters that would never stand in court. The actual legitimate racial profiling states collected by MO attorney general show that Ferguson is better than the state average and has been improving over the last 3 years. DOJ did not use that (publicly available) info because it did not suit Holder’s vindictive “sweeping change” agenda.

I have never seen a sporting event riot anywhere near as bad, though.

IIRC, the Governor was criticized by the Mayor for not sending in the Nat'l Guard.
