Merged Continuation - Feminist Bullies Tearing the Video Game Industry Apart Part II

It looks to me to be a case of eating his cake and having it* as he gets to threaten people and then pretend it didn't matter because it was just a joke.

*the phrase makes sense that way.

Agreed. Both about what the guy was doing, but more importantly about the phrase. Once I started saying it that way, it seemed so much more sensible.

To be fair, I do think the threat was always meant as a joke, possibly even a joke that was supposed to be obviously a joke. Nevertheless, it's one of those jokes that, even after you explain it, doesn't seem very funny, and still looks to me like just another form of harassment.

The pro-gamergate "spin" is that the "harassment" that was attributed to gamergate came from a guy who is not in any way supportive of gamergate (if you believe him, he was satirizing your typical gamer), but a self-confessed third party troll, you know, the kind of troll we've been saying all along are trolling the special snowflakes for silly laughs (because it's so easy) or clicks from the beginning. Like the Brazilian journalist who threatened Sarkeesian. And now when it's clear this big, big danger to Wu was actually acting and not in fact representative of GG, the press still blames GG for, well, everything.

It's like you convict a man for murder and throw him in jail, but then it turns out he was innocent as you find the real criminal. But you become best pals with the real criminal and leave the man in jail, because... reasons and narrative. Nothing to see, move along.

Well, that sort of makes sense, in a fashion. It shows that the extent of the threat was not nearly as much as it was being made out to be.

I have to head off to work now, or I would have more, but the short version is that when people try to imitate gamergaters, they act like psychopaths. That's not a real positive image.

This conversation is extremely polarized, so don't take it too personally. Gamergate supporters are in a vast minority in this thread and occasionally being dogpiled. If we come off as antagonizing, I apologize, at least on my behalf. It's because we're constantly being forced to be on the defensive. I personally have given up with having any reasonable dialog with a handful of people here.

That's the thing, if this is true, and I seriously doubt it is, they're minor things and it's just stretching it to call these things 'harassment'. Again, pretending the account is true, this could've been a random kid playing with pebbles and a drunk neighbor/guest knocking on the wrong door. But, as said, everything indicates this being another ruse.

Yes, which gives rise to more skepticism given that the author is obviously biased against GG, trying to tar them as feverishly as he can.

You'd need to be familiar with the Jace character, the person playing him and MDE group. They're professional trolls.

Well, thanks for being polite. This sure does seem to be a contentious topic. Thing is, people are quite polarized all over the web, as far as I can see anyway. It's very difficult to get balanced, unbiased information. I guess I just came a bit too late to the party.

I suppose I'll go back to lurking.

That was over the top parody of a typical basement dwelling living-with-mom fake martial artist war veteran macho keyboard warrior gamer nerd - not a gamergater. Unless you imply that's what gamergaters are. In which case I'd ask you to look up #NotYourShield.

Besides, this was a character he played for years before GG started. He took the opportunity to play exactly the kind of boogeyman media portrayed a typical GG as, like any good troll would.

But I agree, GG doesn't exactly have a positive image in the mainstream media, no denying there. That's part of the problem. This negative image is largely manufactured and undeserved.

Yes but he SAID he was making fun of GG, therefore he must have been! :D Even if he had asked what's the funniest way to respond to Buzzfeed and was told he should play it serious. It's incredible they are so willing to believe GGare bad that they believed the guy's obvious act to start with and then after getting so burned by that go straight back to believing everything he is saying is 100% true because he is saying what they want to hear. See gamergate are so bad they are now waging a harrassment campaign of playing known down ginger and doing a vanishing act, and sending kids to throw pebbles at people! You see! This proves how scary and hateful gamergate is! /s

Speaking of NotYourShield, this is my favourite NotYourShield video from the Pro-Gamergate supporter "Lizzyf620".

Your previous comment about it being another form of harassment is true, whether it was intended as a joke or not. I think that if I had suffered the incidents in Collander's post, I might be excused a bit of a sense of humor failure at another threat.

If it was during the civil rights campaign era, someone saying that they were were going to burn churches could not plausibly claim that it was just a joke as opposed to a threat. It *might* have been an unrealistic threat, but it would still have been a threat.

Not sure what all these feminists are complaining about. Guys send me videos where they threaten to knife me to death and then try to drive to my house all the time and I just shrug it off like whatevs

And of course everyone on the internet has at least one anonymous online image-board filled with people conspiring to get their home raided by twenty armed police officers, right? No biggie.

Well okay maybe none of that stuff has actually happened to me per se but I've been called names on an online game voice chat no less than four times which is pretty much the same thing if you ask me

Not all harassment is equal. You already know this since you yourself were telling me just a page ago that you believe the harassment women get is worse than what men get, even if men get more of it.

If a black man receives death threats from a known violent racist group, that is very different to a black man receiving non-serious threats from people that turn out to be pranking them. Obama gets a lot of harassment and "threats" but those become very different and a lot more concerning if his security services believe they are being made by people that actually intend to cause Obama harm. Tom Cruise and other Scientologists received a lot of harassment and mockery in the recent past, but that harassment is not equal to Anonymous sending violent threats they actually intended to carry out. It might all be defined as harassment, but not all harassment is the same. Kent Hovind and other Creationists get trolls and harassed and mocked frequently and has been for years now. If actual psycho's genuinely wanted to murder them sent them death threats that is completely different from people trolling them and sending fake threats on the Internet.

Total Biscuit on YouTube and pro-gamergate supporter has talked a lot about harassment he and others receives in a general sense.

"... I believe [Anita Sarkessian] received death-threats. I have no doubt of this. This is the internet, lots of people receive death-threats. Over the last year or so we've received 48 in email form and countless more through burner twitter accounts and those are only the ones that specific threatened to kill us (Jezebel seems to think that telling someone to kill themselves via Twitter is a death-threat, the law disagrees)..." - John Bain aka "Total Biscuit"

People that have a public face all know getting harassed and getting mean comments and even threats on the internet when you have a public face is normal. The more popular you are the more hate and harassment you'll see. The most well liked and popular people on youtube will have way more hate than most people that get hardly any views. The ratio of likes to dislikes may even be 99/1, but that 1% can still consist of a huge number of people because of the sheer number of people we're talking about. It is unavoidable, the more popular you get, the more people will hate you, even if 99% of people like you. I feel like I'm stating the obvious, but apparently when it comes to this subject obvious things have to be repeated over and over again.

The original claim was the "Jace Connors" character was major evidence of how violent and dangerous gamergate supporters were to people like Wu. So it turns out he was not serious, that it was all an act, and to him and his group "Million Dollar Extreme" see it like some kind of "sketch comedy" presumably a bit like Borat or Ali G. He was a 3rd party that wasn't part of gamergate, he just wanted to stir the pot and get a reaction and the gamergate drama was a convenient and easy target.

That does not mean we have to agree with his behaviour. We can still see it as unacceptable and a troll that went too far and that caused real fear, and we can also even see it as something that should be prosecuted. I have seen various pranks on the internet and I think some go too far and have the potential and/or do cause real harm. I recall a Japanese show that had a format that could easily give people a heart attack, or this one where the "victim" is in a fake meeting where everyone is killed except for him.

Whether or not these pranks break the law is not relevant, and it shouldn't be for you either. If what Sam Hyde did pranking Brianna Wu is not against the law, you would fully agree that this wouldn't make his actions any more acceptable or make the terror it may have caused any less real.

What is objectively true is that the claim that what Sam Hyde did proves gamergate is full of genuinely dangerous harassers is utterly false. Not only was it not actually a gamergate supporter that was responsible, it was all an act and there was absolutely no threat whatsoever to Brianna Wu from this person. Even if we all agree this person was irresponsible and it was totally unacceptable that they went this far and should be prosecuted for it, that still doesn't mean they were a genuinely dangerous person. The fear caused may well be real, but that doesn't mean the threat was real.

We have been saying for rather a long time that there are 3rd party trolls that intend to play both sides off each other, it is met with a handwave as if this is just an excuse. When gamergate supporters get doxxed and harassed like I have shown you in the past many of them are fully aware that this may not have anything to do with anti-gamergaters. They know they could have been doxxed and threatened by 3rd party trolls that very much want them to blame it on anti-gamergate and so continue the drama.

Such a big difference in mentality between pro-gamergate and anti-gamergate is that almost universally anti-gamergate refuses to acknowledge the existence of 3rd party trolls that are behaving this way. All hateful comments, all "rape" and "death threats", all the doxxing, all this becomes evidence of what pro-gamergate supporters are doing. It doesn't matter if they aren't part of gamergate, they are against them and so they are all the same and so they feel justified in grouping them all together. It is absolutely the "us vs them" mentality. This is why someone telling Brianna Wu that there are many people who would be happy to discuss things civilly and reasonably with her but that she blocks everyone at the slightest hint that they disagree with her, is represented as someone talking about all the hateful messages and harrassment she has ever received and so is therefore "scary". Why does she do that? Because if you are not with her you must be against her, which means you're part of the same homogeneous group.

So to bring it back to Sam Hyde... In spite of him having nothing to do with gamergate, in spite of him not actually being a violent mentally unstable psycho, and in spite of him not actually being any threat to Wu... somehow ...some people can still manage to claim this still proves gamergate is this way, or that it changes nothing. She was still harassed (!), you will say. Yes, it is true, it can indeed still legitimately be defined as harassment. But pranks and mockery, even pranks that go too far, does not equal genuinely dangerous violent misogynists.

EDIT:

but the short version is that when people try to imitate gamergaters, they act like psychopaths. That's not a real positive image.

He is not imitating gamergate, he is mocking the hysterical image anti-gamergaters have of gamergate. But he didn't say that did he, right? Yes, but he also said 8chan were pissed off at him and that their members found him and ..... "threw pebbles" at him and then somehow got in his locked apartment and knocked on his door and then vanished... You also have to ignore the fact that he said very disparaging things about Brianna Wu on twitter for spending so much time and money trying to get a restraining order against a "figment of [his] imagination" contradicting his attitude in the interview, and where he asked on his Facebook what the most hilarious way he could respond to Buzzfeed was and was told to play it totally serous. So he plays it totally seriously and says he was actually making fun of gamergate and that now they are going after him, and you seem to believe it apparently without reservation. It doesn't matter that his act started long before gamergate, we should forget about that because otherwise he precognitively knew gamergate was going to happen.

Perhaps a more likely explanation is that he already had this character established in this 'long-troll' and then when gamergate came around he decided the anti-gamergate crowd are so willing to believe a crazy violent nutter would want to cause harm to people like Wu, Sarkessian or Quinn that the hysteria from these people was so ripe for mockery he thought he could say the most over the top utterly absurdly laughable nonsense and people would still take him seriously. What is amazing to me is that Wu even managed to misrepresent him anyway, as if what he said wasn't extreme enough! The truth was more amusing than Wu's representation, since he said he was going to "street race" her. Apparently Wu didn't think this was extreme or scary enough and instead represented him as intending to drive across the country with real guns (the only guns were clearly airsoft guns) implying his stated intent was to do her physical harm. His actual video with the crashed car could not possibly have been more full of clues that it was an act. But it was lapped up uncritically and the possibility that it was an act was hand waved. Why? Because it confirmed what they thought they already "knew" all along, that gamergate supporters really were a bunch of dangerous violent misogynists, and this just proved it.

He capitalised on the hysteria and image of gamergate as being being full of actual psycho's, yet here you are missing the entire point and thinking the fact that he went full-on complete satirical mockery of the most hysterical beliefs anti-gamergate has about gamegate supporters, in your topsy turvy world somehow supports your hysterical beliefs that gamergate really is like that.

This is like someone parodying the most extreme exaggerated hysterical image of a man-hating feminist you can think of, then after a while admitting they were just trolling the whole time and then anti-feminists saying that the fact this person chose to portray such a hyper exaggerated stereotype of a feminist this way is just more proof that feminists really are like that. If I used this logic you'd laugh me out the room, but you're so blinkered you think it all makes sense if you use the same exact logic here.

...of course I read it. Quoting points out of context is a gamergate speciality: its not something I'm gonna do here.

If I can sit through twenty minute long gamergate rants I'm sure you can take five minutes to read her post. Just read the thing.

Nobody forces you to sit through rants you don't want to listen to. But ok, I'll bite. I read the thing. That wasn't 5 minutes, more like 20, especially since English isn't my first language. And OMG, did I just waste that for nothing? As I expected, there was nothing besides her feels, disappointment that people interpret things differently, and more feels how much of a victim she is.

So, what evidence do you have, again? Did I just wasted my time for nothing reading this article? Are you ready to actually provide that evidence now that I've read the blog post? And since we haven't been clear here, I assume you're trying to provide evidence that GG is harassing women.

That is a misrepresentation of what she said, and a misrepresentation of what happened.

For anyone who wants to read what she actually said and not something that was made up, the blog in question is here.

http://ohdeargodbees.tumblr.com/post/107838639074/august-never-ends

I don't think it is.

Eron Gjoni is a manipulative psychopath? I agree. Zoe Quinn? Not at all.

Maybe they both are. From what I read in the Zoe Post, she emotionally abused Eron. From what I read in your linked post of hers, she whines that everybody is out to get her. I'm willing to believe whoever has the evidence, right now Eron has provided heaps of chat logs - that were never disputed -, and her manipulative and destructive behavior is not only compatible with but highlighted by her tweets, claims of wizardchan harassment and hostility towards TFYC.

I'm now expecting a long-winded response of 'why are you talking about Quinn? Why do you care?'.

There is a reason why she was granted that restraining order.

What's that reason then?

Evidence has been provided.

Where? Certainly not in your Zoe's blogpost link.

And calling Zoe's blog a "wall of text" is laughable, especially when compared with the wall of text that started the whole thing, which I'm pretty sure that you have read.

God no. I only read TL;DR version at the bottom and the citation images, skimmed the rest.

It doesn't bother me at all if you choose to engage me or not. But you keep saying you won't engage me any further, then you decide to engage me. I'm wondering exactly: why are you doing that?

To keep you wondering.

We have given you a running commentary on the top threads at KIA, and they aren't about ethics.

Your "top threads" has been threads with some 150 upvotes while the real top threads have thousands of upvotes. Your inability to recognize that either reflects your dishonesty or ignorance of how that subreddit works.

If you aren't talking about it there, and you aren't talking about it here, you aren't talking about it.

I find this mentality extremely amusing. You're forcing me to talk about a topic here with you, else it means I don't care about it? Have you ever considered that the world doesn't spin around you and people discuss topics elsewhere and with other people than you? I asked you to start a conversation about ethics in gaming journalism. Go on.

And you do realize you're talking to me, personally, instead of an amorphous hashtag movement?

Well finally you are coming out and admitting the truth.

Finally? I thought that was obvious from me talking about it pretty much this whole thread, seeing as this is what the thread is about and what everyone else keeps talking about as well.

We have barely talked about games journalism at all. In this thread Wildy is the only one who actually cares about it and is discussing it seriously.

I think you're being incredibly myopic when you think people who don't talk about specific subjects in this thread don't care about those specific subjects.

My involvement in this thread has mostly been in the role of responding to people accusing GG of all sorts of horrendous crimes. Now you're trying to arm-twist me into changing the subject. As I said, you've chosen the wrong side if you want to change the tone and topic of this thread.

But I think you've finally been honest with us and dropped all pretence that, with at least as far as you are concerned, that gamergate is not about "ethics in game journalism" but feminism and the gaming industry.

How on earth did you deduct that? Am I The GamerGate? My interests dictate GG? Wow.

As far as I'm concerned, Gamergate is about ethics in gaming industry, opposition to journalistic collusion and corruption and defending gamers from unwarranted attacks by the apparently extreme liberal media and radical feminists. I will happily acknowledge gamergate isn't exclusively about gaming journalism ethics, at least not anymore. Someone said earlier it's a culture war, and I agreed to that.

So lets finally stop pretending you care about ethics, when all you want to do is "point and laugh at the silly feminists", agreed?

That's incredibly insulting and petty of you to say.

Apparently you care so little for ethics in games journalism you don't have a clue about the topic I bought up once in conversation with Edx and once in conversation with you. The latest interview with Peter Molyneux with Rock, Paper, Shotgun has been criticised by many for being to rough on him. Do you think that the way Molyneux was treated by John Walker was an ethical way for a journalist to act?

I don't read Rock, Paper, Shotgun. That aside, from what I've read, I think it was very unprofessional. But being an ******* and not courteous to your interviewees isn't necessarily violation of journalistic ethics. If you haven't kept up with what's the whole gamergate thing is about - it's about disclosures of monetary ties and friendships, about preventing and exposing corruption and collusion and trying to keep the media unbiased, fair and objective.

Minor correction. It was Jan Rankowski who played Jace Connors. Sam Hyde is his accomplice associate, they're both part of the Million Dollar Extreme group.

I love this post on a thread on 8chan mocking the ease at which people still believe the guy:

No but seriously though, I have changed my mind. Like Meadmaker and Walter Ego I have read the interview and he said he was actually mocking Gamergate, and now Gamergate has come after him. And we know this is definitely true and not more of a joke at our expense because we really believe Gamergate supporters are awful people. We just feel it in our bones, y'know? I mean because we already "know" that Gamergate is a group filled with violent criminal harassers, that means we are justified in uncritically accepting everything he is saying now, which is why we were justified in believing it definitely wasn't an act in the first place despite a lot of so called "obvious clues". It doesn't matter that he just trolled us all, he is now telling us that he was on our side all along and that now Gamergate is ruining his life. I want to believe this because I want to be able to say that this proves nothing and actually just shows Gamergate really is a criminal group of harassers.

It doesn't matter that the tactics used against him by Gamergate seem a bit... strange. Like throwing pebbles at him and playing knock down ginger, which seem rather odd and uncharacteristic considering the history of internet harassment. But since we already know we can believe him it must still be true no matter how absurd it may seem. So it just means 8chan are changing their behaviour! I am sure they will progress from irritating him with pebble throwing and knocking on his door and then running away to violence soon! Ultimately I agree with Meadmaker, obviously the more extreme someone can exaggerate a satirical portrayal of the "hysterical" view of Gamergaters as violent psychotic criminals is logically just more evidence that Gamergate really is like that! Therefore since this parody was so extreme, and because we all fell for it, this is just the final nail in the coffin that Gamergate supporters must indeed be dangerous and violent and hate women. Case closed! I'm quite sure this logic won't come back to bite us at all, again.

right now the extreme feminists are having quite a lovely time tarring the gaming industry.

Well at least the pretence that you were here for anything other than reactionary feminist-bashing has dropped. That's progress.

I wonder if Edx will stop pretending it's about ethics in games journalism now too?

Gamergate is not just about ethics in journalism. I will clairfy that before you have an orgasm. It is not just about "ethics in journalism", because of how intertwined certain peoples ideologies are with the subject. A lot of those who support Gamergate are more interested in that drama and laughing at those saying stupid stuff. Before you say it, this is in no way some kind of admission that Gamergate is not about ethics in journalism as well, or that I have admitted in any sense Gamergate is about hating and harassing women.

I guess it is kind of like this... An evolutionary scientist might want to debate the science of evolution with Creationists. However a Creationist might keep bringing up philosophy and theology. Therefore the scientist may have to keep going off topic to talk about philosophical and theological concepts. Now imagine other Creationist's observing this exchange accuse the scientist of not talking about the science and because he is not talking about the science therefore this proves he is unscientific.

Well now imagine a whole community of those who are pro-evolution and those who are Creationists. What you will observe is a lot of debates about philosophy and theology and not science. In fact in over 10 years I debated religion on the Internet solidly I think I'm pretty safe in saying that philosophy and theology may be the most debated points when debating Evolution and Creationism, rather than the actual science. Many people that debate Creationists even prefer debating philosophy and theology for a number of reasons. Maybe they find it easier to understand, maybe they find it more interesting, maybe they just like the drama Creationists create when one happens to say ridiculous things.

It would be absurd to then characteristise those who are pro-evolution as not really caring about debating the science of evolution, and that they just want to laugh at and mock Creationists.

Hurray! The pretence has dropped!

So anyway, what's your endgame with the anti-feminist project? Do you want games journalism and cultural criticism like that of Anita Sarkeesian to not exist? Is this part of a larger anti-progress agenda that is also against equality for ethnic minorities and disabled people, or is it just feminism you hate? Would you say that men and gamers are an unfairly persecuted minority under siege from evil feminists who dominate our culture?

Good lord, this is possibly the most ridicuous post from you yet, especially after everything that has been said so far. Apparently it really doesn't matter what anyone says to you because you clearly only hear what you want to hear.

May I recommended you get a sock, draw a face on it, and put your hand inside. Then you can pretend it is speaking by talking out the side of your mouth in a squeaky voice.

I was in the same position until a few weeks ago. I'll try to explain what I have found.

At the core of gamergate is revelations that several professional and semi-professional web sites that provide coverage of video games had close relationships with game developers and game marketers. It was perceived that game companies and indie developers were using these relationships to influence the review at these sites, or to influence judges of various gaming awards. The allegations of favoritism or commercial influence constitute the "ethics in journalism" aspect of gamergate.

In my opinion, the existence of these relationships should have come as no surprise, but some people are naïve. Gamergate served to enlighten some gamers that not all reviews were always strictly about the quality of the game.

Now, I said this was "at the core" of gamergate, but that doesn't mean that these discussions of alleged ethical lapses are the focus of actual activity. In fact, most of the activity associated with gamergate has been discussions of feminist influence in the gaming industry. For example, the title of this thread came from the title of a news article.

Let's take a step back for a moment for a reality check. Does it seem like the gaming industry has been torn apart? Does it seem like the gaming industry would be a hotbed of feminism? Of course it isn't.

However, there have been certain feminist voices, most notably Anita Sarkeesian, who have been critical of the video game industry because of the way women are portrayed in typical video games. Meanwhile, there are other women in the game industry, especially one particular developer, who have been alleged to use a certain degree of influence derived from their gender to persuade writers to give favorable coverage to certain games.

The alleged provision of sexual favors by female game developers to male writers was cited as unethical behavior. As word of these antics spread around the internet, an awful lot of people seemed to take it almost personally, and the women involved received a barrage of harassing and threatening emails, tweets, and other forms of hateful communications. In other words, angered by what they perceived as unethical journalistic practices, an awful lot of people lashed out at the women involved in what was said to be unethical behavior.

Reality check #2, Gamergaters say that the movement is about ethics in journalism, but the women being targeted are not journalists.

Well, that's my take on it anyway. At its heart is a core of reasonable complaints about the influence of the industry itself on those who write about games and the gaming. Surrounding that small core are a whole lot of idiots ranting about SJWs, feminists, and promiscuous women.

No, seriously, I'm inviting you to explain your position.

What do you think is the appropriate place, if any, for feminist criticism of games by women like Anita Sarkeesian? What about criticism of gamer culture?

Do you think Zoe Quinn did anything unethical, and if so what, and what should be done about it?

Why do you see gaming or gaming culture being threatened by women or feminism?

EDIT: Funny... if you defend Sarkeesian from their attacks, they post a flood. Ask them to actually make a case about feminism or ethics in games journalism, and crickets.
