The stupid explodes: obesity now a disability

Should we ask the doctors who perform bariatric surgeries?

Web MD says: "On average, people lose 61% of their extra weight after gastric bypass surgery. Other surgeries, such as gastric banding, take off about 47% of extra weight, on average."
http://www.webmd.com/diet/weight-loss-surgery/what-to-expect-after-weight-loss-surgery

I don't know if you'd call it "plain old starvation," but those results rely primarily on calorie restriction.

Don't you think it's a bit different in the case of surgery?

Honestly, all I was taking issue with was people saying it's easier to lose than gain and exercise isn't important. But as I've already conceded, easy is different for different people.

Ultimately, addictive behavior shouldn't be enabled. I think we all can agree on that. The other quibbles end there for me.

I agree that there is some bigotry here. Even from myself. ;)

How do you feel about drug addicts who steal from people to support their habit?

Should we be sympathetic to their addiction? It's not their fault?

Gluttony is bad, mmmkay? I know not all obese people are the architects of their own destruction, but the majority are.

We already do - in the context that this thread is actually about, i.e. treating the addiction like a disability. Long term addicts receive often receive the disability pension, or at least sickness benefits paid at the same rate as the dole. I have zero problems with treating drug addiction like a sickness. Do you?

So a quick consultation with Doctor Google shows that Faeculent vomiting only seems to be associated with intestinal blockages and is not related to obesity. If there are kids who are "coughing up feacees", it is not "because of the stuff they are being feed". The children would be very, very ill and require immediate surgical intervention and not some limey twat of a celebrity chef telling them to eat better.

I'm not going to watch a 15 minute video to find the bit you are talking about. Can you please tell us how far into the video to fast forward to in order to find the relevant information? Or better yet, can you find a better source of information than the say so of a celebrity chef to support the idea that people are "coughing up feacees" as a result of their diet?

So you dont think in most cases eating heaps of crap and obesity are related?

Not quite sure how you managed to glean that from anything you've quoted there. I'm saying that "coughing up feacees" is not related to obesity - or, at lest, there is no credible sources that I can find on Google that relates the symptom to diet and/or obesity in any form.

Well, considering that you are prepared to simply blow-off your burden of evidence then I think we can safely discount the claim that you made and declare it complete ********. And, as a result, I think we can assume that your casual disregard for the principles of critical thinking probably reflect porly on any other opinions you have voiced on this topic :)

When has evolution chosen to make people obese and die young?

It is an oxy moron

I just dont want another generation of kids growing up being told fat and diabetes is normal and have another piece of deep fried chicken.

I don't think you would find anyone here arguing the contrary. And recognising the disabling nature of obesity would not be normalising anything. So I'm not really sure what your point is?

Because your own words normalise it.

In some circumstances it may be not a petsonal issue, but it should not be treated as a disability. Unless you make crap parenting one

So how should it be treated? Do you think that you can shame and stigmitise the obesity out of people?
