I'd like nothing better than a stable, prosperous Russia, for two reasons. The first is my geographical location. The other is the fact that I have bet for it with my own money -- Russia is too rich with resources and educated people to stay down forever.

Or that's what I hope. I'm not holding my breath though, not while the current regime is in power.

Not too many ETHNIC RUSSIANS in Sweden. What percentage of ETHNIC RUSSIANS do you think justifies a RUSSIAN INVASION?

Obama didn't start any wars in Afghanistan or Iraq (or any of the other countries you mentioned). Bush started wars, and he was justifiably called out for it. He was compared to Hitler, and many people are still demanding his head.

The difference you speak of is that Bush no longer runs the US. Unlike Russia, the US elects their president for limited terms.

Funny also how he is picking on Obama right while he is renormalizing relations with Cuba, plus his drone strikes were aiming for terrorists and their allies, to help keep them from doing things like flying planes into skyscrapers.

ETA: Since the U.S. is ethnically diverse, wouldn't this apparent Ethnic Exemption Rule for Invasions allow them to invade anywhere they like?

Interesting article in the Guardian

Ukraine ceasefire leaves frontline counting cost of war in uneasy calm
Lull in fighting prompts some locals to fear Moscow is retooling its strategy, while others suspect it has abandoned them

With the rouble in freefall, western sanctions hurting and winter near, Moscow has concluded that the bill for its Novorossiya project is too big. Citing Kremlin sources, the opposition paper Novaya Gazeta reported that the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics would not become independent after all. Nor would they join Russia. Novorossiya has been mothballed.

If life in Dzerzhinsk is grim, nine miles away in DNR-controlled Gorlovka it is dramatically worse. On a checkpoint sign into town someone has written: “Welcome to hell”. According to one local, Maxim, who declined to give his surname, there are no jobs and no proper banks. He said the separatists had forced teachers and doctors to carry on working to give the impression that life was OK, but that they were acting out a role for Russian TV. No one actually got paid anything, he said.

The rebels have proved incapable of providing basic services. In smaller towns, especially among pensioners, there were signs of famine, Maxim said. “Opinion is divided, but the number who enthusiastically support the DNR has dwindled.”

a supposed submarine presence in Sweden (one submarine), never fully verified or located, but whipped into a big story by the massively biased western press, does not an aggressive military action make. This is the huge double standard applied to actions by the United States compared to those of other powers by the mainstream western press. Perhaps constant exposure to that coverage has coloured your view of US actions and in particular Obama. In answer to your first question however, heres a quote from The Local (www.thelocal.se) a swedish news site: " “Russians have a very positive image of Sweden,” says Lioudmila Siegel, referencing Sweden’s connection to the founding of Russia. . . . In addition to the Russian Orthodox Church, which has parishes in five cities around the country, the Ryska riksförbundet serves as an important node for Sweden’s sizeable Russian community as well as a way for them to stay connected with their homeland . . . “Russians live everywhere in Sweden,” says Russian embassy press and cultural attaché Anatoly Kargapolov, adding that most Russians live in the Stockholm region, while about 2,000 live in the south west around Gothenburg. . . . However, the embassy estimates that the Russian-speaking community as a whole is much larger – nearly 90,000 people altogether, including immigrants from the other former Soviet republics, as well as Russian-speaking Swedes." Thankfully some sanity regarding this 'incident' did make it into the western press, although still somewhat out of proportion (see the Washington Post story "No Russia is not going to invade Sweden". Obama is the greatest marketing coup in history - a supposedly 'liberal' African American who has continued the policies of Bush almost without exception, and if you believe what you read in the mainstream press about him, you can be forgiven for thinking he is somehow different from Bush, and not a war criminal. But lets recap his actions since coming into office: The most glaring and undeniable example, is drone strikes. CNN has reported even in 2012 that "Covert drone strikes are one of President Obama's key national security policies. He has already authorized 283 strikes in Pakistan, six times more than the number during President George W. Bush's eight years in office. As a result, the number of estimated deaths from the Obama administration's drone strikes is more than four times what it was during the Bush administration -- somewhere between 1,494 and 2,618. To the extent that the targets of drone attacks can be ascertained, under Bush, al Qaeda members accounted for 25% of all drone targets compared to 40% for Taliban targets. Under Obama, only 8% of targets were al Qaeda compared to just over 50% for Taliban targets. " These drone strikes have been revealed by researchers from Stanford/NYU (on the ground in tribal Pakistan for three months) as terror against whole communities - read the summary report at www.livingunderdrones.org. Obama has expanded the war in Afghanistan - neo-colonial operation that now appears to be a permanent 'arrangement'. Cost so far to the US taxpayer: $1 trillion dollars. But who do you think is getting rich off it? Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, General Dynamics, US corporations. In office since 2008, Obama has continued the Bush policies of Gauntamono prison. Vert rarely - as marketing - he pretends to mull over closing it (one of his many campaign promises that turned out to be utter lies). But in effect little has changed: http://www.theguardian.com/.../obama-administration... Extraordinary rendition continues, all of Bush's 'anti-terror' laws remain in place. Obama has made statements to the press about needing to 'deal with Iran' and Syria. In fact there was a real chance of action in Syria but there was enough 'push back' and dissent to stop it. The military industrial oligarchy that is the United States government is still well and truly in place, waving its massive military around and not shy about using it.

you seem to think the United States has some sort of functioning democracy because they hold a political theatre event once every four years where wealthy elites throw millions at getting into office. Why do you think the main contenders for 2016 are the wife of an ex-president, and the son and brother of former presidents? No functioning democracy, as has been born out by research: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/.../The-US-is-an-oligarchy... The power that runs the United States is not the president, and that is why the policies have remained the same under Obama. Its corporate america, and the military industrial complex that really calls the shots. If Lockheed Martin, the worlds largest weapon manfacturer, really doesn't like a candidate's policies (for instance, maybe less wars), they have many strings they can pull.

MSM lying again, Russia isn't selling nothing.

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-1...es-taking-gold

Yesterday, when we reported the latest rumor of Russian gold selling, this time out of SocGen, we said that "it should be noted that SocGen and its "sources" have a conflict: in an indirect way, none other than SocGen is suddenly very interested in Russia stabilizing its economy because as we wrote before, "Russia Contagion Spreads To European Banks : French SocGen, Austrian Raiffeisen Plummet" which also sent SocGen's default risk higher in recent days. So if all it will take to stabilize the RUB sell off, reduce fears of Russian contagion, and halt the selloff of SocGen stocks is a "source" reporting what may or may not be the case, so be it."

Moments ago, as if to deter further speculation that Russia is indeed converting hard money earned from real resources for fiat paper, the Russian monetary authority made it quite clear, that at least in November, Russia not only did not sell any gold, but in fact bought another 600K ounces in the month of November.

RUSSIAN MONETARY GOLD HOLDINGS RISE VS 37.6M ON NOV. 1
RUSSIAN MONETARY GOLD HOLDINGS 38.2M TROY OZ AS OF DEC. 1
So we can now add another 600K to Russia's most recent holdings:[/QUOTE

Russia's clearly getting very good at tooling the West. Exonerated on both counts.

Mock bombing runs against Swedish targets, violations of Swedish air space by Russian fighters and buzzing of Swedish airliners by Russian planes do, though.

Now again, what percentage of Russians in a country justifies a Russian invasion of that country?

Sweden isn't in NATO* but its borders are not going to be a porous as Ukraine, so there would be no deniability about any Russian incursion of a level that could achieve much**. I suspect that in such an event, many NATO governments would consider it in their interests to support Sweden if the government requested it.

*Although I understand people are discussing the idea, which for a country that has been neutral for a long time says something about Russian standing.

**Single spies, or maybe submarines hiding round bases, maybe, but actual attacks...

To be clear, I'm not actually arguing that Sweden is about to be attacked by Russia. I am simply trying to get to the bottom of TheRealNZ's argument that ethnic Russian minorities gives Russia justification to invade wherever they want.

One thing I can't get my head around...

If Russia is planning to invade Sweden, surely they're going about it in possibly the most stupid way?

I'd have thought that for an invasion to succeed, surprise would need to be very high on the list of requirements.

Therefore, all the incidents must be ruining any chance of surprise?

I doubt Putin is that stupid, however sabre rattling and intimidation is a different matter.

The fact that the US invaded Cuba to begin with just slips off the radar with you? Have you read the torture reports coming out of the US lately?

Even Haiti is now asking Putin for assistance.

Is trying to change the subject all you've got left?

lready answered your question - did you actually read my last post? " No percentage of ethnic russians justifies a RUSSIAN INVASION but it is very odd that you are so passionate about one phantom submarine that was never found and so comfortable with American invasions and occupations that have killed nearly a million Muslims." I'll add to that that there is a great disparity in your concern about mock bombing runs as opposed to over a decade of real bombing by the United States military that have killed hundreds of thousands of civilians, with many estimates as many as a million in Iraq. Are the real deaths of muslim civilians somehow equivalent to mock bombing runs on privileged first world citizens? The people of Iraq and Afghanistan have been put through hell and numerous atrocities. Tell me, what did they do to deserve that? It is a matter on context - in particular historical context - when considering which is the greater evil and risk to world peace. You seem to be convinced it is Russia. But you are also convinced the United States is only drone striking terrorists - I recommend you have a good read at www.livingunderdrones.org - the reports are written by scholars from Stanford NYU who went to tribal Pakistan and they know what they are talking about. You will not see this information in the international press, because the corporate media has little interest in reporting unpalatable truths. Were the 183 kids killed terrorists? These strikes are made based on metadata from the NSA. Over 2000 people have been killed in an area where most people know almost nothing about the United States. The narrative presented to the public is that these strikes are precision, responsible eliminations of terrorists, and as the Stanford/NYU has stated 'this narrative is false'. But you seem to be enormously pro-US and willing to overlook their crimes and murder. The drone strikes are just the tip of the iceberg. We will just have to accept we live in very different realities.

Actually, the uninvited presence of foreign warships in the territorial waters of a nation can be considered an act of war.
