No, wait. "saves".

Obama saves the internet.

So Obama's presenting a four point plan. You can read his full explanation of each point in the full statement below, but here are the important, pretty self-explanatory bullet points:
  • No blocking.
  • No throttling.
  • Increased transparency.
  • No paid prioritization.
Tim Wu is the Columbia Law School professor who invented the term "net neutrality." So if he likes Obama's policy, today is a terrific day for the internet. And it actually sounds like he loves the policy.

I'm sure this is horrible for some reason.

Sure, that's great, but Obama also appointed a staunch anti-net neutrality man to be the chairman of the FCC. So you'll forgive me if I'm a bit skeptical about Obama's plan to save the internet.

Yeah, because when someone is appointed Obama must agree with 100% of their ideas.

So what I expect from Republicans is this.
I'm sure this is horrible for some reason.
I didn't expect to be disappointed.

So it's obvious Obama doesn't support net neutrality because he knows that by coming out in support of it, one of the first things on the new Congress's agenda will be to destroy net neutrality. Obama knows that the only way to get what he wants is to be against it.

So devious.

Given that this Administration often seems to find out what its agencies are doing from media reports, I'm going to wait and see what those agencies are actually doing, before concluding that Obama's "nice to have" list is an actual policy that will be implemented.

Is this Barack Obama, regular guy, expressing the same opinions about net neutrality that many of us have, but cannot meaningfully act upon?

Is it Candidate Obama, saying neat things on the campaign trail, that he may or may not act upon in office?

Is it President Obama, articulating a concrete policy that he has directed the FCC to enact?

The FCC is an independent agency, I don't think the president can direct them to do anything.

I heard that a Senate committee is being formed to look into the possibility that a trained monkey was introduced into the series of tubes that is the internet, placed there by Russian agents to both spy on the data and also infect it with Ebola Trojan cookies. Possible solutions include luring the monkey out by sending bananas over the internet.

"You didn't build that."

I like the idea, except for the part about background checks.

Some are better at it than others. Anyway, I think we're largely in agreement here. It's a little premature to say that Obama has "saved" the Internet.

I didn't say he saved it and I don't think he is going to because you can count on Congress blocking any attempt Obama makes.

True, but it is definitely a step in the right direction.

And, according to the link Mumbles posted, it looks like at least Ted Cruz is against doing the right thing, either because he was paid to be or because Obama supports it.

Oh, wait. I mean he's against it "on principle."
