Ebola in America

If you get sick, and you're not insured, you're much less likely to go to the hospital, because you know it'll be expensive and you can't afford it. So, you're likely to become sicker and spread your germs around a lot more. The "Issues of actual capacity, training, competence, equipment, etc" don't matter at all if people aren't going to the hospital in the first place.

If people suspect that they have ebola, they're going to go to the hospital. Insurance will be a minor secondary concern.

And if we end up in a situation where it's pervasive enough that people with ebola won't suspect it, well, we've already failed at that point.

Everybody still feeling comfy this morning, still feel the government and health system have things under control, know what they are doing and are doing it?

Sure, if they suspect they have ebola. A lot of ebola symptoms are also flu symptoms, though. If I don't have insurance, I'm not going to the hospital if I think I have the flu.

Of course, it's extremely unlikely that you would have ebola. But if ebola were a more contagious disease, the lack of universal health care could be a serious problem.

You'd be surprised how much the prospect of a 50k health bill, personal bankruptcy and the prospect of one's family living in slums can keep people away from doctors.

Have you ever been ill or seriously injured and not had insurance?

Even with insurance the co-pays and other out of pocket expenses can prevent someone from seeing a doctor right away as the rent or other bills may take priority.

Yeah, but then I live closer to a Baylor hospital, not Presby. I think god likes them better, or something.

So the new ebola patient, 2nd contracted in America, flew to Cleveland the day before she was diagnosed.

I am a lay person but common sense would tell me to postpone any travel until after the incubation period had passed.

Yep. I'm feeling completely comfy. Why, aren't you?

I'm feeling comfy on my remote island.

Got my guns, my canned goods.

I went out and picked up some of the American chestnuts in my back yard.

I just hope someone out there can keep the Internet going...

ETA: I'm glad I picked up one of those laser thermometer thingies at an auto parts store. Nobody with a fever gets past my driveway!

Yea, I am OK.

It sounds like the hospital really dropped the ball and the CDC should have removed the patient using their people to one of the 4 facilities it has rated for this type of containment.

Two things about the hospital. Upon his actual admittance he was left in a non quarantined room for several hours and possibly in an XRAY lab as well, not sure if this was the same room. They also used their internal transportation system to move his samples about, this is a tube system similar to a drive up bank window from what I can gather.

The CDC's people need to step in and take full control.

It's not extremely unlikely that the people who had contact with Duncan and are experiencing flu-like symptoms have ebola. And we should know who all those people are. If people are getting ebola in the US without even suspecting the possibility, then we've already lost complete control of the situation.

Score is two health care workers but ZERO casual contacts?

Looks like the contagiousness jumps up as the disease progresses. So little chance of spreading by any half way healthy new case?

I'm thinking Duncan spent a week living with his roomies to no difficulty, the latest nurse's trip probably didn't transmit anything either. Maybe.

It's still far more likely that they have a condition other than EVD.

Anybody else finding that TV News coverage of this deserves some kind of award for irresponsible fear mongering because fear brings Ratings?
And this applies to all the major News Networks. They are all milking this using fear.

Oh yea! This morning CBS America Show Morning Time Happy Zone (or whatever it's called) had a guy on talking about the potential lapses that occurred at the Dallas hospital but was showing images from Africa of nearly dead people lying in beds, bodies on the side of the roads, and people in full moon suits spraying down mud shacks.

I couldn't believe it.

So, I heard this from a coworker today.

She went to a local clinic in Tennessee to get a flu vaccine. The lady taking her information said "it's good you're getting vaccinated with all that Ebola going around"

Stupidity knows no boundaries.

Now I am not OK. We are definitely all going to die from this.
