Presidential Primaries 2016

For all the recent brouhaha about me striking C. Christie from the list, I just wanted to add that I hope that he does run, and that I will turn out to have been wrong to strike him. This is not to say that I hope he slips the noose for his corruption, though it's hard to reconcile those both those courses.

The reason I want him in the race? It's moments like this:

"Promises were made that can’t be kept," Christie said of the state’s public-employee pension system. "Welcome to the real world, folks."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/polit...47a21e-1374-11e4-9285-4243a40ddc97_story.html

That's in response to a question about why he's breaking his promise about funding levels of state pensions. Using the passive voice to describe his own actions? Check. Refusing to own up to his state's financial disaster, which completely sink his rosy predictions from before he was reelected? Check. Dismissive and condescending toward anyone questioning his flaws? Check.

Dear God, please spare this candidate for action in the 2016 season.

That's the part I don't get. Nobody on the list has formally announced and yet Christie is doing more candidate-like things than most of those listed. Out of the 50+ names listed more than half have no realistic chance and of the rest most have a slim at best chance. I'd put Christie in the slim at best category. (There is a chance he will come out of bridgegate unscathed. About the same chance as Bachmann going a week without saying something stupid, but still a chance.)

Okay. ;)

WTF?!

Does she really believe the nonsense she spouts or is she just counting on her target audience to be too ignorant and too America-centric to understand that she is lying?

...............
(1) Partial list of the dozen or so countries which recognize gay marriage.

What's sad is that the base believe the nonsense and spouts.

Wait.
I want a do-over on the Palin quote
“For all of the thousands of years of recorded human history, about 5,000 years, there is no instance of any culture, nation or tribe ever having as the established standard for marriage anything other than between man and woman. - S. Palin

No nation ever?
She must be making that claim based on a no-true-Scotland fallacy.

Then she's ignorant.

Still not getting you. Recorded history goes back 6000 years or so, and even many educated people would guess at 5000. Of course she's willfully ignorant about the marriage thing, but what about this recorded history thing?

I was mistaken. I had thought China had recorded history that was much older than 5K years.

Shocking developments today. First, R. Perry, governor of Texas, has been indicted by an Austin Grand Jury for something or other.

http://www.politico.com/story/2014/08/rick-perry-indicted-110071.html

As I came to this thread to update the list, and strike the accused from contention, I found an even greater shock -- he wasn't on the list! Of course he should have been there day one, and that's my oversight.

So, on this historic occasion I both add and strike R. Perry.

One thing about this list is that anyone who says they're definitely not running gets struck out. One way to get unstruck is to waffle on that. Here, for example, is M. Romney yesterday:

"'Circumstances can change, but I’m just not going to let my head go there,' Romney said during an interview on the nationally syndicated radio program 'The Hugh Hewitt Show.'"

http://www.politico.com/story/2014/08/mitt-romney-circumstances-can-change-110368.html

We'd love to have you back. Remember this though -- by your own calculation, the unemployed, lazy, good-for-nuttin 47% are automatically not voting for you.

Now, for R. Perry news. His indictment, which called my attention to his inadvertent absence and brought an immediate striking, looks to my untrained eye to be unlikely to go to trial. I'm going to un-strike and wish godspeed. C. Christie remains struck for now.

There's even a counterintuitive theory that the indictment will improve his support because conservatives will rally around him:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/24/rick-perry-indictment_n_5704535.html

It all hinges on how people perceive it of course. If they see it as him getting targeted by political foes for just doing his job, and they support what he did, it could play to his advantage.

I believe his words were "the untaxed, lazy, good-for-nuttin 47%."

Chris Christie repeatedly saying things like ...

“I’m thinking about it. It is an enormous decision to make not only for me, but my family. Probably by the end of this year or the beginning of next I’ll decide.”
... is not reason to unstrike him. I mention it only to show how much he likes to dance in the spotlight.
