• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

Future of the Forum

I got a "not available" message for 10 minutes or so. It was a forum belch.

UPDATE: We have received productive feedback and suggestions, and a proposal. In five days, the JREF board will close the call for proposals. So, if you have any lingering brainstorm ideas that you wish to propose, please email to sharon@randi.org by Wednesday, August 13, at 12 noon Eastern time U.S.

(Posts on the Forum are not considered proposals.)

Then, we will proceed with the necessary steps. JREF board will make an announcement in conjunction with the party who will take over the Forum.

When can we expect the announcement? (If this was a government function the announcement would in no way be timely. Not expecting that here.)

Tried to log on and got a cannot connect message.

I was trying to submit a rather lengthy post:( and there was a long delay followed by "cannot connect". After that, I was getting immediate error messages on every attempt...not delays. I tried the JREF main site, and it connected quickly as usual. For sure it was only the forum that was down. Not certain how long it lasted.

Oh, had they forgotten to mention that? Yeah, once a month near the fool moon the entire population of Sweden shuts down and goes to shallow water bays around the nation for the Running of the Lutefisk. It's quite a sight to see, evidently. If someone's forgotten to hit Reset before they go out, sometimes the whole country shuts down for a few hours.

I knew that.

and Iceman......
just one last thought.......

We all got 'wowed!" by just what happened....
To tell you the truth........
I don't know what just happened........

The site is going to....
But no one knew........ Including the admins and whoever..... But someone knew. Because you and whoever were putting in proposals.
Money talks and you no what walks.......
So.............

People are willing to give you the benefit of the doubt...
But your JREF page does list your occupation as a entrepreneur...
least the last time I checked............

Gordon Gekko????????

Let's hope not.
Again. Willing to give you the benefit of the doubt.

You start bringing in "promotional" ideas and doin' this or that.
And try'ing to tie it into this or that?.................

Well I'm gonna give you the *&)$$) this or that...................

I'm pretty sure that any proposals iceman made came after we were told that there were problems on the horizon for the forum and as a consequence of that.

It may not have been blazoned on the top of every page, but it certainly wasn't hard to notice. I picked it up pretty quick.

If I'm mistaken I am open to correction.

Just for what it is worth, I am sending my support for Icerat.
Thanks for jumping in!

Actually it's called Summer and it's more than a few hours.

Seriously nothing gets done here in the summer. Now people are heading back to work and my inbox is getting filled with messages "Just back from summer vacation and wanting to catchup on project XYZ ...."

Am I doin it rite

What's all this fuss about icerat ?.

AFAICS
He's sound on (i.e. doesn’t like) the Muslims.
He's sound on (i.e. doesn’t like) the Russians.
He is into Knox
He is into Amway.

On the 1st and 2nd – this forum has been far too soft >.> on both these issues.
On the 3rd – Well what forum doesn’t need more (or just as much) cartwheel.
On the last – OK This Amway thing sounds like a cross between Tupperware and Scientology.
It's the free market at its best !

So lets get with the program, Kick some Brown and Red bottom, Defend some White bottom, all the while keeping an eye on the bottom line.

It's Win all the way down.

Lets GO !

Still relies on the fallacy that one's posting history on current events determines suitability to run the forums. Kind of like judging my ability to properly adjust the valves on your Ducati based on my position on Roe v, Wade.

Leaving aside his posting history, icerat has provided evidence satisfactory to the JREF of his ability to maintain the forum (in the hardware, software and financial senses), has been willing to work with JREF to address privacy issues, and has been forthright in his answers to questions in this very thread as far as the transition is to be handled. I think he has earned the benefit of any doubt.

Aw, c'mon. We are skeptics. Doubt is what we do. :D

Icerat.... I realize things are up in the air.
I apologize if I have come off..... well ..... less then friendly.

And I apologize to the rest of the website.

But.........
If you don't mind me saying.......
and I agree I have done it in a bad way.....

Well you haven't answered any questions......
The important ones.
Yeah if you get it .... well it will carry on for 6-12 months squeaky-clean.

Then what?

I've been catching up on a lot of other things this week, so not following this thread that closely, so my apologies if i've missed questions.

What will happen in 6-12 months? I'm not a psychic, but the goal is for it to run much as it has now except self-funded (hopefully the guest advertising will cover it, but donations will be accepted).

We (myself, admins, and some other volunteers members with expertise) are pretty much in agreement to upgrade the forum software to Xenforo at some stage, that's about the biggest change people will initially notice. The admins have also suggested some minor changes to the rules, nothing too big. We'll put them up for discussion first.

After that, who knows? One of the things I'm working a lot with at the moment is helping people connect better offline using online communities like forums. Would people be interested in a member map for example, and seeing where people live so they might be able to connect with like minded folk locally in meetups or whatever? (with privacy protections of course). That's the kind of thing we might look at adding on later if there's demand. How about member blogs? All sorts of possibilities, it's open for discussion.

I don't get it at all. What's with all the extended ellipses? Stuck key?

nothing about a stuck key.....
I worked for the government for 20 years.

Call me jaded........
And I was "on" a lot of projects....

I can't tell ya how many contracts were given out for this or that.....
