Future of the Forum

Thats a good point. Not so much term limits, but an escape clause, sort of? That is, icerat cannot just decide to pull the plug JREF-style without giving the forum some set amount of time to find new hosting. Of course, that can't be on icerat's dime - the forum has to be capable of paying for the costs of hosting.
Ah, yes. An escape clause would be good, too. But, that's where my first point, about independently evaluated recovery plans come in.

If icerat does do a very nice job with the forum, I would be willing to be the first to congratulate him.

(I wasn't originally going to post about icerat in here. But, I figured I could keep it tame enough.)

I'm confused, here. Are you saying that no one at the JREF has beliefs like that (including Randi) - which is kind of a nuts thing to think - or are you saying that since they are an entity and not an individual it doesn't matter?
I suppose, as Penn says, everyone's got a gris gris.

But, when you're doing business with someone, it's reasonable to evaluate what they think a "good business opportunity" tends to be. That's all.

As am I - looking forward to the new name for the forum - AMWAYISGREAT.ORG and apparently you can become a member free of charge and earn money if you can get 10 other people to join?

Hmm, this sounds like the sort of inflammatory post an admin should look into.

Man this thread moves along...

Since I've locked horns with icerat in the various MLM threads, I want to toss out my two cents on this aspect.

Although we fundamentally disagree about MLMs in general (and Amway in particular), he has always argued intelligently and tried to support his opinions with documentation. He never ignored or insulted me. To me, this demonstrates the necessary level of maturity and aplomb.

I have no problem with him running things behind the scenes and am grateful someone with the right tools stepped forward.

Someone offering to take over, and pay for, the new home for your forum doesn't really sound like a business transaction. Then there's the fact that the mods and admins are going over there too. And on top of that the possibility of Jeff being involved... So... Where is the transaction?

Oh, and that the JREF has stated the forum will still be theirs for the first six months of it being in its new home. So, again...

No, the offer was for them to pay for it. Not quite the same thing. Who knows what brilliant offers they got today anyway ... we might all be off to be part of Shark Week on Discovery Channel Forums :)

Yeah, it's a not-for-profit transaction. Technically not a "business" one in that sense.

But, I would like to think that a good non-profit strives to be business-like, even if the actual economics are a lot... uglier... underneath. So, some level of such scrutiny can still be warranted.

The more imporant point is that: As long as recovery plans are in place, in case anyone screws things up, it probably doesn't matter that much. So, let's hope the backup and recovery plans are handled in a manner that does not depend entirely on a single person's word that they are adequate.

Do we get our own shark?

My eyes are popping out. Not only do you get a valuable asset for nothing you are being paid to take it. I should have made a bid for it.

That value has yet to be proven, of course. It sure wasn't a profit center for the JREF.

I got a signed copy of The Conjurers once for getting other people to sign up. Does that count?

Enough with the icerat bashing.

I also volunteered. Now, every year, I re-sign a professional code of ethics, and believe it or not it really does mean something, to me at least. It so happens that icerat was ahead of me.

It seems to me that icerat is cut from the same cloth, regardless of whatever opinions he may have ventured in whatever threads he may have participated in.

Were it me rather than icerat, I would sure as hell be operating under my code of professional ethics, regardless of any posts I had made.
