• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

Future of the Forum

I must say I am pretty sure that being worried about PI right now is long after potential problem already happened. (We are still on ancient version of VB for which IIRC are number of known security holes of critical nature)

Second, almost every page of thread contains how PI would be treated for transfer.

Third, is moderation working at all?

Fourth, PMs should be by default kept. Those who don't want to, can delete them.

Well, this part is wrong:
As a general rule, the JREF will not disclose or share any of your personally identifiable information except if you have given permission or when we believe in good faith that the law requires it.
Actually it's not wrong, as the "general rule" statement covers their asses in that respect.

Yes, but you missed another part. The agreement each member signs when they join. A part with no such wiggle room:

Privacy

The JREF is committed to safeguarding your online privacy and does not sell or share the information you provide during registration with any other organisation. The JREF Forum has a Privacy Statement that can be found in the FAQ.

If they do not remove everything except username and password before a transfer of this forum is made to "any other organisation" they will be breaking that registration agreement.

Some people are claiming a transfer has already been made and they failed to abide by that stipulation.

@Belz, a re-phrasing of Klimax's post:

"This is the last forum on which I intend to be active. At most, I'll post some comments about articles (in the comments section of the respective article), but that will be all I do."

FWIW - I get quite different results on my PC using firefox with all cookies blocked and no browsing history, than I do on my android phone with, by default, location services enabled and stored history.

For one, on my PC, the IP address from my ISP identifies me as being in Atlanta, so I get a lot of results for Atlanta when I search, say, for electric guitar strings. But, the GPS on my phone identifies me as in Central NC, and the search results are quite different.

Try it with a random search term. You are experiencing a form of cognitive bias. You are remembering only the cases that vary.

I feel it's important to say this:

I believe Rick Adams, Sharon Hill (idoubtit), Icerat, and all the Admins and Mods of the forum are acting in good faith. All these people want the forum to move off from the JREF and have a new home, preserving as much of the history and legacy as possible. From what I've seen, you can trust them to do what's best.

It was described to me that the JREF had washed its hands of the forum and given it to icerat, who had complete control. Yesterday's events have shown that that wasn't entirely true.

When the JREF is finished doing what it needs to do, we'll see if there's a role for me to play.

So, if this forum folds, where are each of you moving to ?

I read the straightdope message board sometimes, but I don't think they have the level of activity you find here, nor the great contentiousness and passion. (And silly and flair.)

OK, please nevermind completely about both the google search methods and about what Scrut finds funny.

A more important situation could not be lost in our pointless off topic discussion. I apologize for my part in these two distractions.

I'm sorry but I can't make heads or tails of this post.
Sorry.

Thanks for fix. I made just a correction to it. (It shouldn't destroy your work. :D)

Not true. You have merely proven that some people laugh at things that are not funny. I would describe them as sick if I was asked.

Black humor. Fairly popular in some countries...

idoubtit -

Could you please ask whoever is in charge at the moment to turn off registrations? There's no Admins to handle them and no point anyway, since the forum is going away.

Thanks.

I don't get it, why would anyone search for a random search term? Its pointless. In the real world, people search for things they need or want to know about. I did that and got different results from different devices. I can continue to do so ad nauseum. The point is, at least to some extent, your search results are tailored to you and others are likely to get different results. Perhaps not to the extent that was suggested earlier, but its there.

/off topic stuff

Maybe you could organize some interesting JREFugees trips! :)
